2021-2022 U.S. Men's Figure Skating

Jason got almost the exact same score and did almost the exact same content as at the last WC, except with a 2A at the end instead of a 4S at the beginning. He did two 2T and one 3Lz then too. Not sure if the layout change means he probably is or isnt planning to add the quad later on. Jason is fine either way - as long as he isn't in any kind of cast, he'll be on the Olympic team and not on the Olympic podium.

Like you I hope he’s fine and makes the team.

To the best of my knowledge, the last time he planned a 2A in his programs was 2017.

He only did one 3T at Worlds 2021 because he popped the intended 3F-3T to a -2T. FYI, his total score here and at Worlds 2021 was about 12 points under his PB. Compare these scores to 4CC 2020.

His score of 245.35 is also the highest for a junior man this season. Second highest is 231.99 from Yablokov.
Ilia is off to an awesome start. He had some errors on some of his jumps and did only 2 quads when he has a flood of quads with him. Along with that, he almost hit 90 points in his Tech! He is also almost 15 points ahead of Yablokov, who also attempted two different quads. It shows how good he is, and how much potential he has.

It'll be interesting to see if a young skater beats Jason at Nationals whether Jason would still get picked for the Olympic team. Assuming Nathan and Vincent are skating well, I can't see Jason getting selected for the team event, and he certainly won't medal in the individual competition. Would they reward Jason for his years of contributions and recent body of work, or try to get a skater from the next generation some experience at a big event?

For now Jason’s in selection priority group 3 with his worlds and Finlandia scores. Ilia is kissing priority group 3 with his 245.35 today. He seems the only one who could challenge Jason for the 3rd Olympic spot.

Well, if there was ever a case for the committee to step in, this would be it. Jason is a National Champion and an Olympian. I would certainly vote to send him if he finished 4th at Nationals.

Ilia’s path to Beijing is clear. First he needs to score higher than Jason at an ISU senior event before nationals. Secondly he needs to beat Jason at nationals. If he could do both, I think he’s going to the Olympics.

And a World Medalist.

In my opinion, the big event to send a young skater for experience to isn’t the Olympics. Look how well that worked out with Polina. Let them go to 4CCs or Worlds.

This post comes with the assumption that Nathan and Vincent will beat Jason as well, right? We saw what happened at Worlds last year. Jason rarely has a bad outing at Nationals and we saw Ross win the Silver and still get passed over for Adam and his BOW. Jason certainly has that in Spades over Ilia as he has Zero experience as a Senior.

I really, really hope Jason goes to the Olympics. There is no skater quite like him at the moment. He exudes joy and kindness, and passion on the ice.

Well, many of Jason's fans feel the same way. Love him or not love him, no one else is Jason on the ice. Since I happen to love him, I agree with you. :)

Jumping off, I think the US Fed is going to do what the US Fed wants to do at the end of the season, and the guidelines can be read to justify whatever decision they make.

They're always taped, it's for the Russian split jump so he doesn't cut his hands on his blades.
Actually, they're almost never taped in competition; and it's not for the Russian split jump (in which he does not even come close to touching his blades), but I imagine it's for the various catch-foot spin positions he performs, including the catch-foot layback and the teardrop spin.

😊

Since Jason is beloved here in the US and other countries, I hope that will help his cause. Wouldn’t that also be in the committee’s best interest to attract fans = viewership = ratings = advertising = profit/success? Not sure of the exact formula, it seems reasonable to me 😊

Sorry, but no.

If we absolutely must have a committee decide team makeup, instead of letting the athletes decide by virtue of their performances, then we should at least insist that committee attend the interests of all athletes equally. No favoritism.

Personally, I hope Jason is on the team, but I hope he makes it by virtue of finishing Top 3. If he doesn't, then it's time to pass the torch. And, for the record, same for Vincent and same for Nathan.

And what a brilliant decision that was! Ross was denied his Olympic dream so Adam could go to the Olympics and finish 10th.
