Does anyone know where the cut off will be in terms of how many people who competed at the Senior CHallenge will go to Nationals? Will 24 or 18 skaters start the short?

It seems to take SC a while to get the list of competitors together when one would think they would already know whi is going?

Skate Canada made it very clear early in the season that the cut-off for Senior women and senior men is total of 18 skaters at Canadians, 15 dance teams and 12 pair teams.

The top 15 senior women at Senior Challenge will go to Vancouver - Cynthia has a bye but chose to skate, and apparently so does Jessica Dube - and they were both in the top 15.

The cut-off for Senior men is top 11 from Senior Challenge.

Someone on this forum said the magic number of 18 at Canadians was a result of Skate Canada wanting just 3 warm-up groups. They could have taken the top 24 and had 8 in each group, for not much more $$$ than 18 skaters.

A lot of really good men and women were left behind in Mississauga - especially in the 16-24 skater range - that would have moved up at Canadians.

I think the pressure to qualify got to a lot of skaters this year in a way that the pressure of skating at Canadians doesn't. Charlotte Belair - two-time JGP particpant this year - didn't make it through!!!! Nor did Junior national team members Kerry Meagher or McKenzie Pederson., or former national team member Elizabeth Putnam. Lot's of talent that bowed to pressure....

I hope that many of those senior skaters who didn't make it - stick it out for another season and don't give up the dream to quit or go to school. At $40-50K a year - that's a lot of money to waste if the national dream is not possible.

Some excellent points.

I don't think that Skate Canada will ever do an 8 skater a flight competition. SC likes the senior nationals to "mimic" the format of the Worlds as much as possible.
I don't think SC will mess with the 6 skaters per flight maximum that the ISU uses.

They are even adopting that the short program/ compulsory dance order is not done by random draw and should be as follows.

1. Reverse order of the challenge results of the non-byed skaters.
2. Byed skaters who did not compete at senior nationals last year ( there is a draw if more than one in this category) - Only dance will have a draw between Crone/Poirier and Lenko/Islam.
3. Byed skaters in reverse order of the finish at nationals.

This is to mimic the ISU rating being the criteria for short program order at Worlds.

I think the real problem is that the more byed skaters there are, the fewer number of skaters could qualify out of challenges. This is especially noticeable in an event like pairs which allow 12 pairs max can compete at nationals.

A not impossible scenario is a situation where 6 pairs get GP assignments, and 3 pairs make the JGPF in pairs. In that situation, only 3 pairs could qualify out of the challenges. Theorectically it could mean that a team good enough to make the national team is left behind. ( Top 6 make the national team)

It would be far fairer if a fixed number qualified out of the challenges no matter how many skaters are byed.

If Emanual choses not to skate, then I would expect SC to take the next skater on the list - Karolin Metivier - as the first skater to perform the short program.

Pretty close , except that byed skaters will always skate after non-byed skaters. Phaneuf had a bye to Canadians even though she competed at the Challenge. So Phaneuf would skate after Lacoste but before Hawker.

Joey Russell did not get a bye to Canadians since he did not get a GP assignment so he would definitely skate before Reynolds and Chipeur ( who did get GP byes). Based on the challenge results Russell would skate after Maxim-Billy Fortin and before Murphy. So he would be skating in the first flight, not the last.

As far as i know, anyone who makes the JGP final, comperes on the SR GP circuit, or placed in the top 5 at last year's nationals get's a bye to Vancouver.

It is only top 3 at nationals not 5. Samson did not have a bye nor did Kirkland/Radford.

Are McCuish/Evans not going to Nationals? IIRC, they won the junior title last year and they medaled on the JGP.

Nope they aren't going to nationals. They had to finish among the top 7 non-byed pairs at challenges to make it. Since Duhamel/Buntin ( who have a bye to nationals) competed at the challenge, that meant they had to finish in the top 8 at the challenge to make it to nationals. McCuish/Evans finished 9th.

You don't get a bye simply by medalling at a JGP. You actually have to qualify for the JGPF final to get a bye to nationals. McCuish/Evans did not make the JGPF.
