It seems that SP has made Map suffer a lot this season. I feel sorry for her. But she did really really great in her LP under huge pressure despite that she had more difficult stuff in her LP than in her SP. Her 3F-3L also seems to be very consistent as long as practice goes. I wonder what's making her jump combination in SP so difficult. Bad memories or the ordering of jumps? She looks relatively comfortable in her LP. But she looks extremely nervous in her SP. Any thoughts?

A good thing, however, is that the way she misses her 3F-3L is getting better. At Skate Canada, she was totally off the usual balance in her SP and was downgraded in her LP. In TEB, she popped it in SP and two-footed it in LP. But this time, she rotated it with hands down in SP and finally fully rotated it in LP with plus GOEs. I was happy about that.

Her 3/3 is getting better, I noticed that as well.. Who knows we will have to see LOL! I think whoever hits the short program, Mao/Yu-na wins.

She showed quite a bit of resiliency and guts today with her LP.
While I have no idea why her SP is still giving her loads of troubles, the manner she came back today to win the LP was very impressive.

Maybe it's the fact that she knows her lutz will be penalized.
In the LP, at least there is some time to make up for that.
I don't know.

Maybe though coming from behind is less stressful for Mao as well? It's kind of like the pressure is off and I have nothing to lose?

She can change her SP jump layout to:
3f+3t,
3lo
2a

It's very unfair that 3a is not allowed in SP... Stupid rule.

I think Mao has what you'd call delicate "fragile" nerves. At last year's GPF, Mao was first after SP, but faltered in her FS and placed second after Yu-na overall. She probably had difficulty controlling her nerves skating last and being first after SP; the order she skates affects her perfomance a great deal. This year, skating first and being last after SP, she probably felt like there's nothing to lose and so she HAS to give it her best shot with nobody behind her. Yu-na was first after SP this year at GPF and still maintained her first place after her FS. Can you imagine the pressure skating LAST AND trying to hold onto that first spot? Mao had SIGNIFICANT advantage skating first in FS and maybe a slight disadvantage to her PCS scores as a result of skating first. So it evens out in the end.

(At the World's Yu-na was first after SP and fell to third after her FS, but I think that was as a result of her back injury, not because of her nerves. )

I agree. She showed impressive resiliency and guts today. I really respect that.

I also speculate that her lutz concern may be affecting her in SP. It's reported that after TEB they even tried out replacing 3F-3L with 3L-3L and 3Z with 3F (but eventually decided not to this time). I read that her attempt to correct lutz also affected her flip (which I assume to be during the off season). Then as EPSN reported, they seemed to have decided not to correct her lutz now that the season had begun. Having concerns about two jumps out of three may be indeed quite challenging. Besides, she has had bad memories about 3F-3L in SP having accumulated since worlds. When she hits it, it would become a breakthrough moment for her:agree:

Mao proved why she is a top skater. I hope the rivarly will last long. She really has one of the best loops. I think she should go for a loop instead of a lutz.

Yeah, a lot of people tend to be more comfortable with 3f-3t than 3f-3l. But it seems that Mao is more comfortable with 3L and that her 3f-3l is more consistent than her 3f-3t as long as practice goes. It would be wonderful if she can bring her 3A in her SP. But perhaps they may be concerned about falling on it altogether.

I also love her loop jumps! Has anyone seen her 3L-3L? I don't think I ever did.

Is 3A allowed in ladies' SP??

3A can be the jump out of steps or part of the combo.

I don't think you want Mao to do a 3T in her combo jump - it has gotten downgraded more than counted.

So perhaps if she is consistent in her 3A, can she do the jump layout like this?

2A
steps+3A
3F-3L

It would be really cool. Besides, she may be excited, which may boost her guts. I don't think it very comfortable for her to have a 3Lz knowing that it's gonna be called.

She does it better than Tara. Maybe she should really go for 3l-3l, 3f, 2a. That still has high base value of 19.

I don't like 3l-3l, actually I don't like 3l as the sec jump of any combo. There's no rhythm/no flow in between two jumps, does not look pretty. It reminds me of Kimmie's so-called 3lutz+3T...
