2021-2022 U.S. Men's Figure Skating

Not for guaranteed assignments. Jimmy is currently 35th, he would be 33rd with additional points.

Of course, feds do not always go strictly by the World Standing.
I would be willing to bet that unless Jimmy were to bomb at Nationals (perish the thought!), he‘ll be part of the team going to Four Continents. A good showing there would do wonders for his world standing.

The way he has skated this year—including finishing ahead of Nathan in the short at Skate America!—I would say he is on a good trajectory. So proud of you, Jimmy!

Should that be enough to get him GP assignments or no? ...

For now, Jimmy Ma has moved up to Top 24 on Season's Best list for 2021-22.
(Although at the moment, the ISU page still is showing that before Golden Spin, Jimmy was #37 on the SB list with 228.12 from Skate America.)

I think the current SB order -- after Golden Spin -- would be:

#16 | 255.65 Samarin -- NHK Trophy 2021
#17 | 255.07 Messing -- Golden Spin
#18 | 254.48 Vasiljevs -- Internationaux de France
#19 | 253.80 Sadovsky -- Rostelecom Cup
#20 | 253.56 Aliev -- Internationaux de France
#21 | 252.15 Mozalev -- Golden Spin
#22 | 250.97 :) Jimmy Ma :) -- Golden Spin
#23 | 250.08 Kondratiuk -- Denis Ten Memorial Challenge
#24 | 247.65 Yamamoto -- Warsaw Cup
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
#25 | 245.35 Malinin -- JGP Austria
Of course, this snapshot is only temporary, and the SB list will keep changing after Euros, Four Continents, Olympics, and Worlds.
ETA (on Dec 12): Also Junior Worlds.
If Jimmy does well at Nats :pray: and is sent to Four Continents :pray:, it is possible that he could improve his SB further -- as well as gain World Standings points.
Others also will be hoping to move up on both lists.
But if(??) Jimmy's SB were to be in Top 24 after the season ends, he would be guaranteed one GP spot.
In any case, congratulations to Jimmy for bronze 🥉 at Golden Spin. 🎉
Does anyone know why Maxim Naumov withdrew? I really had high hopes for this season. Hope he is ok
I think the little we know is that on Nov 15, USFS cited "injury" as the reason for Naumov's withdrawal from Rostelecom.
Only a guess, but a reasonable (IMO) guess would be that no matter what the current status of Max's injury/recovery is, time has become too short to prepare adequately for Nats? :(
Men's SP is on Jan 8.
The always-amazing Jordan Cowan has provided time-stamps for everything, including the performances by Max Aaron and Sean Rabbitt.
Thank you, Jordan!!!
Thank you @ice coverage for the summary of the season's bests. Am I incorrect then that the ranking on which GP assignments are (theoretically) based are ISU World Standing points? Wouldn't be the first time. :)
That would be great if the US Fed sent Jimmy to 4CC, and he could rack up more world standing points. With Maxim unfortunately injured, and it appears that Yaro is missing in action,:scratch2: top six appears do-able for him. Of course, Tomoki, Camden and Ilia may also have their eyes on an assignment. ;)
Both the World Standings list :) and the Season's Best list :) come into play for Grand Prix assignments.
Top 24 from World Standings list are guaranteed one assignment.
Top 24 from Season's Best list also are guaranteed one assignment.
Two assignments guaranteed for Top 12 women and men at previous Worlds; and for Top 10 dance couples and pairs at previous Worlds.
I won't go into the fine print of skaters with "Return" status or "Come-Back" status.
But my understanding is that basically other assignments are supposed to go to skaters within the pool of Top 75 on Season's Best list.
For reference, the link to the General Announcement for the 2019-20 GP season is below.
I purposely am going back to 2019-20, because it was the most recent normal/pre-pandemic season.
Jimmy was top 6 (number 6) last season. So I would hope for at least a repeat of that. Dare I hope for a pewter medal?
This was the best podium in ages and Jimmy was so freaking cute at the medal ceremony. He was almost as happy for Keegan’s victory as he was his own.
Adorable skaters with class are my jam.
According to current body of work, Jimmy Ma is the clear 4th best US man. So very doable.
I see him as first alternate over Ilia Malinin based on his season so far. He did have a bad competition at Warsaw, but he's been consistent besides that and he went 20 points over his median score at GS.
The excitement at US nationals for me is about who will be the first alternate for olympics: Jimmy, Ilia, Tomoki...? Yaroslav has kind of disappeared :(
Anyway hoping for great performances from all of them. And that fans outside of US can watch. Not having big hopes for that.
:ot: I guess because the GPF was cancelled, there's a show on right now that is showing highlights from the Season. They started with Vincents LP from Skate America and I'm guess they're going to show the LP's from every skater/skaters that qualified for the GPF. I think is a nice thing for them to do since the final was cancelled.
You have no idea how happy this makes me.
Polina Edmunds interview with Andrew Torgashev! I haven’t listened yet
thank you Tavi, I have only listened to five minutes, but Andrew was in fact injured again this year!😞
The injury last year was a stress fracture from training a 4S, and this year it appears he reaggravated it😖 He's only been on the ice for two weeks.
Will need to listen to all of it later. It appears Polina is doing a step by step for his injuries and his season, and it's very helpful for knowing what has been happening.
