I have several things to say but I suppose it‘s better not to. I think everyone can and will make their own conclusions from the events of this season. Good luck and a speedy recovery to Aliona!

At least this answers the question whether I‘ll watch RusNats. Maybe if Sasha shows up I‘ll change my mind, let‘s see.

Daria being there won’t surprise me at all.
If anyone can defy the medical establishment, it’s her.

Yeah sure, that‘s such a great idea to "defy the medical establishment" (aka ignore doctors' advice, I guess?) and possibly risk re-injuring herself and ending her career for good before it‘s even started:palmf: Daria has had little chances at making the Olympics even before her injury because she has no ultra-c elements, so there‘s no sense in rushing her recovery now. She is only 15 and has a life and a career after these Nationals to think of.

It's not about the medical estamblisment as much as about the lack of training. Because even if fully reocever a month without skating means at least a month and half (and rather two) to get back to the form.
Yeah, and because it’s a hip injury there’s very few ways to keep up with cardio that are also low impact. She’s probably going to have to do a LOT of work to recover stamina.

This is also a problem with Aliona’s wrist injury apparently extending into her fingers. If it was just a wrist she might be willing to skate on it and ignore the momentary pain from momentum of jumps etc. if it was casted. She could compete at nationals albeit probably it would throw of her jump balance, affect her spins and the overall presentation image, etc. It is after all not a broken leg.

However when you wrap injuries of the wrist that extend to the thumb or fingers you’re advised to do only low level cardio training early on because a high pulse in that area can disrupt the healing and cause greater injury. You also can’t keep up with all the non-skating training you do— weight training and the like— because you’ve impact your range of motion and you’ve really got no ability to bear weight.

Any chance that Aliona/Daria/Sasha could still go to Worlds if they don’t compete at Nationals?

I know that a few years ago Liza had to withdraw from Nationals but competed at the RCF to try and qualify for Worlds…

A lot of skaters who do well at the Olympics don’t often go to Worlds that year so maybe it could be a good opportunity.
Sasha, as I understand it, will be on RusNats. Alena and Daria still have chances for the world championship. It all depends on the officials in this case.

I think that whoever makes the Olympics would likely go to worlds with or without a good showing. Anna is not apparently injured and she clearly hasn’t peaked yet so I could see her wanting a second medal just to prove how dominant she really is. Sasha is still after world gold so even if she wins the Olympics I don’t think she pass on another chance for a world title. Kamila can’t sweep this year but she’d probably want to win all the titles like Alina. Aliona would probably want to go to prove she is a good skater even with her terrible luck. Liza is the only one I’m undecided on. While she hasn’t stated she wants to quit, she’s the most relaxed of all and she already has a world title. If she does well at the Olympics if selected she might say “well I have another year”. Though if she doesn’t make the team I could see her wanting to win gold at worlds out of spite.

Skating with a broken wrist is a horrible idea, regardless of the details. It's hard to control what your body does in the moment of a fall, and if she were to instinctively brace her fall with her broken wrist she could do an awful lot of damage.

It would be better if you said them. But there's nothing you can say there's nothing any of us can say. This is no one's fault. The ice is slippery and hard and skaters get injured all the time.

I am so sorry for Aleona. It's been a brutal last 14 months for her. Sad. But she still has a long career ahead of her if she wants.it.

That said I hope Aliona finds a new home next season where she can be clearly the number one lady. That can happen in Moscow or Saint Petersburg. Davydov would take her in a heartbeat. But if she stays at TT she could be the number 5 or 6 lady. That's ridiculous and she doesn't need that and stress that comes with it.

Also the commute by train to the rink every day is too much. Better days are ahead for AK. Sorry she's going through this. But that sports and that's life.

Yes I definitely agree. I was solely speaking from the perspective of anticipating someone saying “well we’ve seen people skate with broken arms before, why not her if it’s a wrist and the competition is so important.”

At that point you might be willing to accept more risk in an attempt to make sure you don’t lose your last chance at this Olympics. Skate on it knowing the risks thinking well if you land on it again then it’s not like it could break more, you’d just really have to sit out which might be worth it to some. But you don’t want to risk nerve injury from over constriction as the hands are very vital to quality of life, not just athletics.

In general athletes are trained to avoid landings where your wrists break the fall to prevent injury, so I suppose you could argue one just be “extra careful” though of course sometimes those falls are unavoidable.

I don't think these ladies want to become number one in the team of Tutberidze, Plushenko, Mishin or Orser. They want to be number one in the world, but does the transition to another coach guarantee the achievement of such a goal? Here Trusova was already number one among the "angels", but this did not bring her gold.

No, not ignore doctor‘s advice. More like recover quicker than expected.

But, she does seem like the type to ignore the doctors. Haha

I've just realized if Alena competes at Rus Nats, she will break a record! The record of the oldest ladies skater to be coached by Eteri in a competition. Currently the prestigious record is being held by Evgenia Medvedeva at a whooping old 18 years and 3 months. Alena will become only the 2nd adult lady to compete under Eteri. I think Alena should get as much recognition for this just like how people are constantly applauding Elizaveta for being 24.
Wow so the sacred record withstands! Who would have thought? She's now definitely out of the olympics and euros now that she had much of a chance if she didnt miraculously restored 3 3a. As for Worlds, I see Maia getting a bigger chance from the fed compared to Alena.
Who knows. Alena might end up with being the most talented skater to never win an olympic or worlds medal. I dont see Eteri putting up with her for anymore past this season. And Alena herself doesnt seems to have much motivation to continue on.
It is literally quite fascinating how this season was so ready to be crowned the Year of Eteri. The 2 valuable assets who had runaway was returned to her, she had an brand new World Champion, she had a heavily endorsed Junior champion and she still had 2 decent backups. She was literally the Thanos of figure skating.

Just for a little context. Our renowned czech snowboarder, olympic gold medalist Eva Samková, broke both her left and right ankles two days ago during the race. It happened just at the finish, where she did everything possible to get into the silver position (in which she succeeded).

This is her 8th serious injury (and 2nd and 3rd fracture, others are torn ligaments, sprained ankles, dislocated shoulder etc.) within the last ten years in the top sport. To prolong it further, she is still hoping she will be competing at the olympics and started the rehab immediately.

No matter what personal world does each of us live in, this is the real world of the top sport and figure skating is no exception whether we like it or not.

putting up with...what? and her breaking her hand means she doesn't have motivation to continue on?

i'm so confused where people are getting this stuff. Aliona literally had to prove she was serious and was on probation when she went back to Eteri. she has bent to Eteri's requirements of her and has done as she asked. she has made decent progress with the 3A this season. after her first GP she said she was going to go home and work harder. her form kept improving each competition this season. today she stated she is staying another 4 years. but now that she's injured and physically cannot compete for an olympic spot, she has no motivation to continue?

and what exactly is Eteri putting up with? a struggling student who is *gasp* human?! :drama:
