Well Lipnitskaya was pretty solid prior to the individual event and its not like Valieva doesn't have technique issues, and do they really want to chance it and blow up Valieva's individual shot when there are 2 extremely competent alternates for the team event? Additionally, while both girls would probably keep their mouths shut to the press - could you imagine how pissed both Shcherbakova and Trusova would be? Zagitova was solid and they still substituted in Medvedeva for the team event even though she was injured that season and from what we know neither Shcherbakova or Trusova are injured at this time.
I can justify a multitude of scenarios for the Team event, and any scenario has very little cons beside ticking off the skater(s) that don't go to the team event.
- 1 skater does both events
- Pros: They don't have to decide who is the odd woman out
- Cons: Last time the Fed put it on 1 woman's shoulders to go rock-solid for 4 programs blew up in their faces and partially ruined a skater. Additionally they would likely be ticking off 2 very decorated skaters considering the last Olympics the Fed willingly substituted an injured skater for the team event
- Split the team event with Valieva/Shcherbakova
- Pros: not wearing 1 skater out
- Cons: none
- Split the event with Valieva/Trusova
- Pros: not wearing a skater out, *Does the Fed perhaps give the FS to Trusova to let her have 5 quad attempt with the condition that she plays it safe and thus not risk the sweep in the individual event?
- Cons: none
- Split the event with Shcherbakova/Trusova
- Pros: not wearing anyone out, and similar to Sotnikova lighting a fire under Valieva for the individual event, and considering how solid she looks for the individual gold right now - all 3 skaters go home OGMs (unless implosions happen in the team event)
- Cons: none
