US Olympic Team Announced

I love Brown, but I don't care for the Olympics being used as some kind of lifetime achievement award. At least, it seems that way since the last Olympics. I feel hypocritical though because I wanted Rippon on the team in 2018, but I might have felt differently if I didn't like his free program so much that year. And if the USOPC requires Nationals to be part of the Olympic qualification system, it should matter how you perform there.

There was never going to be an answer here that people would be happy with, because honestly all four of these guys had points for and against them, but I will say this: the debate should never have have been Brown Vs. Malinin, and no, I'm not referring to the fact that they literally failed to call one of Zhou's falls in his protocols (look, I like Zhou, but that was beyond ridiculous), I'm referring to the fact that Zhou and Malinin have exactly the same risks attached.

Malinin has been consistent this season, but last I checked, this has been the first season we have seen anything like consistency from him, and while both Malinin and Zhou, on their best days, have the potential to be on the Worlds podium, they both also have the potential to bomb so badly they fail to make the freeskate entirely. We have literally seen that happen with Zhou.

Seriously, Brown may be at risk of losing to Kolyada, but Zhou is as risk of losing to Donavan Carillo. Now what do we think the outcome will be if both Malinin and Zhou bomb that badly?

Look, I actually like Zhou, under-rotations and all, and I really wanted Malinin on the team after his showing this weekend, but they shouldn't be putting both of them on the team at once. The odds of the US getting a podium sweep, even with both at their best, is only slightly above zero, and dependent on several others, including Hanyu, bombing, and in the grand scheme of things, AKA the medals table, there isn't a whole lot of difference between a 4th place and an 8th place for USFS. At the Olympics, 4th is just 1st loser. But USFS does have to consider more than just individual medals, they also have the team event to keep in mind, and I honestly wouldn't trust Zhou, or even Malinin that much, to put out a clean short in the team event. There's no way USFS are going to make Chen skate both programs for the team event, if they use him at all, and Chen's never really excelled in the short program - Brown can and has bested Chen there before. The SP has literally the same number of spins and step sequences that the FP does, with only half the number of jumping passes and only two of them permitted to be quads, so not having a quad doesn't really impact Brown as much here. He could potentially place first in the team SP and set USA up to make a challenge on the gold, but Zhou or even Malinin could bomb badly enough to cost them the silver. It's a big risk, and they'd be stupid to take it on a million-to-one chance for a podium sweep.
This.

And as I said in the comp thread, our Men (all four of them) are wonderful, but the idea that somehow they could sweep the Olympics podium isn't realistic, and I mean no shade whatsoever. I don't think Yuzuru, Shoma, and Yuma will all bomb. And obviously there are some other contenders like Mikhail Kolyada (hoping he is healed very soon!) who would also have something to say about that. So not putting in Brown with the idea of pulling off some podium sweep.....nope doesn't make sense.

You have a very good point about team event as well. I think Nathan's already stated he doesn't want to do both programs, and Jason has a gem of an SP that he's consistently done well with all season.

I would have dropped Brown - as it stands right now he's doing program content that would be struggling to place bronze on the Ladies podium.

And basically they rendered their own National championships worthless - think about it the entire event could have been skipped for the meen. Zhou didn't get bounced for his bad FS and Brown didn't get bounced for a young gun that skated 2 phenomenal programs and placed second at nationals and skated a program that's actually competitive with the men's field.
The young kid has to wait in line. That's basically the message.

Maybe one day when Ilia is old enough, he can screw over another bright young hopeful!!!!

Sadly, Jason Brown has peaked, and his skating isn't going to get any better. Ilia Malinin is the future of USFS and sending him off to JW would be a disservice not only to Ilia, but to USFS. He needs the points from a major competition to earn two GP spots next year, and the JW winner gets only 500 points as opposed to 680 for a bronze at 4CC, or 639 for 7th place at Worlds. Ilia simply cannot do another season on the JGP---he needs to get two assignments, but without a major, that isn't going to happen.

If the JGPF had happened, he would have had additional points there, but it was cancelled. For all we know, JW 2022 could be cancelled, too.

Ross Miner's story is repeating.. why I am not surprised? I knew this will be the team the second Natnan landed his third quad.

About the consistency which "should" have let Zhou off the team. You are comparing the consistency of someone who attempts 6/7 quads + three 3As per competition with someone who attempts 1 quad + three 3As.
Yes Zhou has URs issues but so does Brown who gets q on half of his 3As and ur calls on almost all his quads internationally.
And it isn't like Zhou was a zamboni all the season. From his 1st intl comp to the last this season he probably had ONE bad skate.

Well the Browns are off to Junior Worlds, so I'm a happy camper.

And Hawayek and Baker are off to their first Olympics, so I'm an even happier one.
Excited to see the Browns at Jr Worlds after their unfortunate WD from Nationals. Hope they are well soon. And thrilled we will be able to see H/B at the Olympics. Their beautiful skating was rewarded. Hooray! Hope you were able to watch their US Nationals FD.

I don't understand why people are saying Ilia is 'inconsistent'. He won both his JGP events, and was rated #1 for the JGPF because he had the highest total score for any JGP event. If the JGPF had happened, he would surely have won it as well, but unfortunately it was cancelled. Then he won bronze at the Austrian Challenger, his first Senior event ever. He won the Leesburg VA US Champion Series event with the identical layout he did at Nationals, all jumps rotated and landed cleanly.

It is true that he failed to get the World TES minimum for the SP at the Austrian Challenger, but it was his first senior international competition and the first time he attempted quads in the SP (they are not allowed in JGP events). However, he placed 2nd in the FS, earning the World TES minimum, and made it to the podium in his first senior event.

I'm happy that Elizaveta Tuktamysheva is not competiting for USFS, because imagine if she manage to get 2nd place overall, USFS skating would have manage to not make her on the team, and put Kamila 1st, Alexandra 3rd and Anna 4th at the olympic team if all of these are from USA.

Just kidding !

But seriously at least Russia federation respect the standing. USFS should learn from Russia instead of making scandal like this and put the 2nd place finisher off the Olympic team, even Russia would not do that !

This thread is

So of course I'm going to get into the drama!

I do feel bad for Ilia. He is a huge talent, and has grown so much. What impressed me most were his spins (and the quads lol). Ben said that Ilia read a few comments on Instagram that he should work to improve his spins, and that he listened. I think having that level of foresight and initiative to take criticism from online strangers and recognise it as valid, and then doing something about said criticism, bodes very well for him in the future.

With that being said, I think I know why the USFS sent Jason. Regardless of how you or I feel about it, I think it was the correct decision.

1. Consistency. Sadly, the US men, while great, do not have a great track record in SP recently. Of course, Nathan had two disaster skates at the Olympics in his SPs, and Vincent had his nightmare skate at the 2021 Worlds. Ilia, too, had a nightmare skate in Warsaw and finished very low there. Jason hasn't had a bad SP in forever, and even if he did, he would be helped by things like step sequence and spin GOE and his component marks. Basically, a healthy Jason will make an Olympic FS, and likely in the top 10. If worse case scenario happens, Ilia, Vincent, and Nathan could all fail to qualify. That's a big oopsie. (and yes this is HIGHLY HIGHLY unlikely, but I think fans and skaters both often think "well what if everything is perfect?". But it won't be, and it's far better to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.)

2. The team event! Vincent's free skates have been on the struggle bus a bit, and it's unlikely Nathan will do two portions of the team event. So, USFS needs someone reliable, consistent, and charismatic, aka Jason. He can score in the top 3 of both segments depending on how others skate, and if he gets tired, it's ok because he's not a medal contender. If they send Vincent in and he skates like he did today in the free, he could be last. If Ilia skates like he did today, he could be first. But if he makes a few mistakes, he's not going to be able to beat Misha Kolyada or Keegan Messing or Jin Boyang because of components.

3. Reputation and world ranking. Ilia is a semi-unknown internationally. He's not the strongest PCS skater, and the judges aren't going to hold him up if he makes a mistake. Look at Mark Kondratiuk at Rostelecom, who is a great performer, a relative international unknown, and had two rough skates there. He got pretty low PCS and dropped a lot because of it. Even Evgeni Semenenko, who had two solid skates at Worlds, placed behind Jason because of components. Ilia's not going to receive the same scores at the Olympics that he did here, plain and simple. His GOE and components are both going to be far lower. Plus, he has a very low World ranking, meaning he would skate very early. That would only hurt his score.

4. Broadcasting and marketing. NBC loves a good story and a friendly face. Look at Adam Rippon, who was the funny and charismatic one in 2018. He helped create a nice story. Let's be real, Nathan and Vincent aren't the most naturally charismatic guys (nothing wrong with that, they just seem more introverted and well-thought as opposed to bubbly and outgoing). Jason can give a good interview, tell a nice story, and be the warm and outgoing face of mens' figure skating. Ilia can't fulfill that role. Plus, he's young and most people have never heard of him. If you watch skating at any point, though, you've probably heard of Jason Brown. Also, NBC has been marketing him like crazy.

A solid skater in Ilia’s position could have won the Austria cup blindfolded and with their hands tied behind their back. It was so poorly skated all around it was won by a skater with a 68 in the SP who came up from 12th to 1st. Yet he can only finish third. This was his opportunity to show what international judges would have done with his four quads. Bombing your first senior international opportunity does not bode well when you’re trying to get selected for the Olympics.

I have to say Ilia is probably the highest scoring skater I've ever seen not get assigned to the olympics. I'd like to see him at 4CC.
But I hope this experience spurs him on and he stays healthy for 2026! He could even be a world champion by then ;)

I would not blame him if he gave the US Fed the middle finger and bounces to a country that will appreciate him vs. holding him back for a skater who is non-competitive at top international events.

Unfortunately because he is first alternate, based on 2 of the other 3 disciplines, won't be sent to 4ccs because they will want to minimize his chances of exposure in the event that 1 of the main team members tests positive and can't go the Olympics.

Not a good idea. Remember how Misha Ge had so many issues with visas because of him representing it?

Out of curiosity, what's the story behind Misha Ge's struggles?

And those might not be an issue for Ilya, he was born in the US so he has US citizenship and thus a US passport, if he can retain his US citizenship while representing Uzbekistan with dual citizenship, whatever struggles Misha Ge had might be completely irrelevant because Ilya might be able to travel on his US passport.

Thank you for posting this. USFSA never said they would take the top three from nationals - they set out their selection criteria and they used long histories of good skating to select the team.

Honestly, as a longtime viewer of gymnastics, this type of team selection is common and something I'm actually glad to see more of in skating as it rewards skaters who consistently put in good performances vs one great skate at Nationals.

I keep telling them. I’ve been to two Olympic Gymnastic Trials and the winner makes the team. The rest of the team is determined by the selection committee who goes in a room and deliberates until they’re done and they come out and announce the team and that’s it.

Chile, I'm just happy that Ilia didn't win because people would have burned down the internet. I loved watching Ilia this weekend and I look forward to seeing him in future years. He made his best case, but that's all it is, a case. Jason and Vincent also made their cases and I do not think anyone was robbed. Jason was not gifted anything, he's been a rock. I hope everyone stays healthy.

In terms of Ilia representing another country, I would only advise that if (1) they were low balling him on scores or funding, or (2) the competition was so hot that there was no way he would make it out of our nationals. Neither is the case, so why would he switch? If anything he's set himself up to get the red carpet rolled out for him in the US for the next quad.
