US Olympic Team Announced

I would have dropped Brown - as it stands right now he's doing program content that would be struggling to place bronze on the Ladies podium.

And basically they rendered their own National championships worthless - think about it the entire event could have been skipped for the men. Zhou didn't get bounced for his bad FS and Brown didn't get bounced for a young gun that skated 2 phenomenal programs and placed second at nationals and skated a program that's actually competitive with the men's field.

No. They did not render the National Championships worthless. A National champion was selected - isn’t here tied with Dick Button? If so that’s some very rarified air. Envelope funding for next year was determined.

I would not blame him if he gave the US Fed the middle finger and bounces to a country that will appreciate him vs. holding him back for a skater who is non-competitive at top international events.

Unfortunately because he is first alternate, based on 2 of the other 3 disciplines, won't be sent to 4ccs because they will want to minimize his chances of exposure in the event that 1 of the main team members tests positive and can't go the Olympics.

He’s skated for the US so USFS would have to release him and they don’t like to release skaters. I’m not sure they’ve released Deanne Stellato and they were never going to do anything for her.

Chile, I'm just happy that Ilia didn't win because people would have burned down the internet. I loved watching Ilia this weekend and I look forward to seeing him in future years. He made his best case, but that's all it is, a case. Jason and Vincent also made their cases and I do not think anyone was robbed. Jason was not gifted anything, he's been a rock. I hope everyone stays healthy.

In terms of Ilia representing another country, I would only advice that if (1) they were low balling him on scores or funding, or (2) the competition was so hot that there was no way he would make it out of our nationals. Neither is the case, so why would he switch? If anything he's set himself up to get the red carpet rolled out for him in the US for the next quad.
If they truly believed in him they would send him to the Olympics

Malinin deserved it more and would likely score higher at the Olympics but selecting Brown comes at no surprise.

Brown has a GP silver and bronze from this season and qualified for the GPF. It’s what saved Rippon last time.

What I don’t get is people saying Zhou should have been dumped over Brown and Malinin. But tbh those who think that are just out of pure dislike for Zhou. If Brown gets in based on his BOW, then Zhou definitely gets in, having the 2nd best total score in the world this season and a GP gold and silver, and being a legit podium threat.

But also people saying Malinin should leave the US after they did him wrong is a bit amusing too. Nationals wasn’t the be all end all and it is hardly like Brown didn’t get any accolades this season to merit getting on the team over him. Malinin is untested at major senior events and he has more time to continue to prove himself.

I recall when Asada wasn’t able to make it to the 2006 Olympics after she won the GPF but was age ineligible for Turin and the outcry was deafening but then she went on to have a splendid career.

I would rather Malinin use this as motivation to work towards 2026 than become a flash in the pan who met their goal of going to the Olympics and called it a career or lost motivation.

Out of curiosity, what's the story behind Misha Ge's struggles?

And those might not be an issue for Ilya, he was born in the US so he has US citizenship and thus a US passport, if he can retain his US citizenship while representing Uzbekistan with dual citizenship, whatever struggles Misha Ge had might be completely irrelevant because Ilya might be able to travel on his US passport.
It’s nothing to do with citizenship. Citizenship only becomes important for OG anyway. He’s skated for the US Fed and the US Fed would have to release him to skate for another country.

As if that perennial loser Jason Brown was going to pull up trees in Beijing. The guy hit his limit a long time ago and was never going to amount to anything. I suggest Ilia to go back to the motherland. The Russians at least don't deal with sentimentality and popularity points.

I think that would be the correct team. The argument that Ilia is young and he can go 2026, is so wrong. Jason was young in 2014. Chen and Zhou were 18 in 2018. I'm so sad for Malinin.
That was never a possibility. Only choice was Brown or Malinin.

They believe in him, but they're of the opinion that a career is more than one or two years. Scott Hamilton, Brian Boitano, Evan Lysacek, Nathan Chen, etc. were all young and knew that they would make their mark eventually. If anything Ilia will be more motivated. I don't see the huge problem.

Chen Boitano Evan were all given the career opportunities they earned they were never left of a team that when they placed top three at national championships

Sadly, Jason Brown has peaked, and his skating isn't going to get any better. Ilia Malinin is the future of USFS and sending him off to JW would be a disservice not only to Ilia, but to USFS. He needs the points from a major competition to earn two GP spots next year, and the JW winner gets only 500 points as opposed to 680 for a bronze at 4CC, or 639 for 7th place at Worlds. Ilia simply cannot do another season on the JGP---he needs to get two assignments, but without a major, that isn't going to happen.

If the JGPF had happened, he would have had additional points there, but it was cancelled. For all we know, JW 2022 could be cancelled, too.

Jason has just literally had the best season of his career.

Junior events do not count for selection to Senior events.

Earn? In what world did Ilia earn anything? If the rules were that the top 3 went from Nationals then he would have earned it. Those are not the rules. I understand disappointment, but this line of argument that something was taken away from him? He didn't own anything. The decision was always going to be in the committee's hands. It might be sad but those are the breaks. When Michelle Kwan didn't get to skate in 1994 I waited for 1998. Injustice and unfortunate circumstances or bad luck are very different things. People are trying to raise this to the level of an injustice and it is not.

I do fell bad for Malinin... in 4 years in could be injured or his body has changed.. maybe lost his chance...

Or even decides to compete for Russia...
Once again, he cannot just decide to skate for another country. He has competed for the US internationally and they would have to release him.
