Andrei Mozalev

As long as he has a beautiful, as clean as possible, skate, no matter what happens with Olympic selections, he will have new opportunities. There are mistakes that could happen. His jump arsenal is still fairly limited, and even if he doesn’t fall, he often gets dinged on 3A and 4S. He also is not an outward performer, and Kondratyuk is, with Semeneko using more familiar music.

In the end of the day, even if he doesn’t get selected, he will be showing his free skate that he prepared with the thoughts of Olympics to a larger audience than he had ever had before. He convinced 5 judges to put him into 1st in the short and 2–in the second. May he be even more convincing in the free.

His lead is far, far, far too small to talk about any potential placement with any degree of confidence.

Anyway, I am going to be here first thing tomorrow morning to keep all my fingers and toes crossed for luck and waiting patiently for the men’s event!
If he finished 3rd at nationals and should have been higher and if he fade niches 2nd or better here at Europeans how can you leave them off the team? Mark should be on the team unless he bombs and they're gonna go with a veteran misha. It comes down to Andrei against Semenenko. And I don't want the politics of the professor to come into play. I've had enough of that.

Well, if it were up to me, sure thing… 🤣🤣🤣 both Mozalev and Davydenko said that there is no point talking about Olympics until after the free. So, we’ll know tomorrow. Until then, I’m fasting and hoping that Mozalev+Team+Universe=strong, clean skate that will blow the judges’ minds by how awesome it is, and, like, the whole world will suddenly see Mozalev through my eyes, lol.

I'm with you.

It's an amazing opportunity for Andrei.

And it's time to turn the page on the professor and spread some of the wealth around. Enough of rewarding this legendary coach for Urmanovs olympic triumph in1994 and Plushenko's olympic triumph in 2006
and what should have been plushie's repeat on olympic championship in 2010. That's a long time ago now.

Gosh, I am so worried I was up from 2 am and watching ID.

Rooting for Andrei Mozalev as usual. Clean skate and big score to him! 🙏🤞🙏

He has a very bright future. But I thought the same thing of Dmitri 2 years ago after he won nationals and Europeans back-to-back but then he had ankle surgery about a year and a 1/2 ago and something else happened. The sport is both so beautiful and so brutal it's hard to imagine and explain.

Montreal 2020 got cancelled—I had tickets and everything. Then Aliev had Covid, unfortunately… I keep hoping for his comeback.

Did Dima have covered an ankle surgery or ankle surgery than covin? Those are setbacks even for the most fit of athletes which figure skaters are.

It's like most of the skaters in Saint Petersburg in all disciplines got Corona virus at 1 time or another.

Which is better for Andrei his SP or free?

Well, that’s it.

Usually, it’s free, but not today. He will stay the first alt, but I hope he can do cup of Russia final and if he gets worlds, I would be happy. If not, GP.

23-27 February, so he will have to start proving himself again.
Is that after the Olympics?

Andrei finished in front of seminanco of Semenko so shouldn't he go?

He beat Semenenko at Russian nationals and again at Europeans. Don't tell me placements don't matter. Mozalev is also in better form.
Russian figure skating won't collapse if the professor doesn't get a second man on the team.

Yes, he did, but I am guessing, and it’s just a speculation, that Mozalev needed a huge success. And, unfortunately, this doesn’t help him shake off instability concern. This program is what will be cited over his amazing free in France.

A shame.

The fed will do what they want but in the 2 biggest competitions of the year he edged his main rival and it's not supposed to mean anything? Semenenko does not deserve it. But because of Mishin politics he will probably get it.

There is always silver lining. Mozalev lost to two skaters who had skated Senior Circuit for a few years, and if he gets access to Grand Prix series he will finally be able to develop in a more normal pacing. He didn’t have the kind of guts that Kondratyuk has to go from zero to the max. It’s unfortunate, but he did well. Not stellar, but well. Unfortunately, things don’t always work out. Life, however, goes on.

But he beat his main competitor in 2 major competitions for the Russians for the Russian men and at this competition by even a wider margin then at nationals. Semenenko? 2 disappointing events in a row is not good however. how are they going to brush that under the rug? Evgeny is of course good very good but with the Olympics on the line he failed and Andrei did not.

I wish them all well and hope they come out of Europeans healthy and whoever goes to the Olympics does well.

Yes, the same. And I definitely didn’t want pictures of Mozalev crying into Davydenko jacket in K&C either, but we’ll see. Maybe RusFed will be humane for once and puts the Mozalenko half that doesn’t get to got to Olympics into the Worlds right away like Browlinin?

Rusfed humane? That would be nice. ;)

Mozalev’s mini interview on the FS Russia main site:

Старался отвлечься от мыслей, что это мой первый чемпионат Европы, после которого определится состав на Олимпиаду, что надо все сделать чисто… Старался отвлечься, но не до конца удалось. Конечно, переживал… В произвольной хотелось все сделать… Надо было избежать «бабочки» на сальхове – это, наверное, единственная такая серьезная ошибка… Расстроен… Но зацикливаться на плохом не буду. Это не поможет. Надо работать дальше, -- сказал Андрей Мозалев.

I was trying not to think about how it’s my first European Championship, after which the composition of the Olympic team was to be determined, that I must skate clean… I tried to distract myself, but couldn’t quite accomplish that. Of course, I was anxious… wanted to do everything in the free… Should have avoided the pop on the salchow—this was, probably, the only such serious mistake… I am upset, but I won’t fixate on the bad things. This won’t help anything. Must continue working…

Okay I hope there are no rules against multiple posting in fan forum thread. At least it’s contained here and peeps don’t have to trip over my posts all over random threads. Looking forward to see what he picks for the gala. DeSade, maybe?

Also, he is not depressing. i reject that adjective, o random stranger on the Internet. He is soulful.

Don't worry there are no rules on double posting here, I have seen some fan Fest threads where it's mostly one or two users posting updates. (it's a good thing they are getting more exposure for the skater!)

I must say, Andrei does seem to have an introverted, melancholy air about him. It works very well for the SP this year but I'd like to see him less tense and project some more as he gets more experience. I think that's one of the reasons why some skaters have struggled to get good PCS despite good SS. Andrei's good showing at Euros this year should give some breathing room regarding GP spots for the next two years or so, so it's less "do or die" for a while.

I just watched some of his junior programs and the music choices are a bit too out there even for me  I'm glad this year's programs are more mainstream!
