Jason Brown

I don’t think we can read too much into the gala list. They’re clearly trying to include participants from different Feds (or coaches in the case of Morisi 😈). I think they gave it to Vincent bc he tested positive and couldn’t compete. While I’m sad not to see Jason and think the gala will be less interesting without him, I think it’s really a nice gesture to invite Vincent.

I just started crying when he talked about how he shattered and built himself back up.
He’s such a special person, there aren’t words to describe how soulful and genuine he is.

Oh god I just got to the bit about the future - how after the competition ended he turned to Tracy and just started crying 😭 Asking “is this it? is this our last competition?”

Maybe it’s selfish of me but god I hope he continues. I think he took the right approach in not naming the olympics as his final competition, because of the pressure, but I just can’t fathom not seeing him & Tracy together in the k&c again.

He’s looking forward to Stars on Ice, no mention of Worlds as an alternate. I am going to keep praying that he gets called up and decides to go. At this point I’ll take out a loan in order to fly to france to see him!
Is there a longer version of this interview that what is linked above? I didn't hear anything about Stars on Ice or about asking Tracy if this was their last competition?

Jason Press Conference (not the video) where he talks about crying with tracy, the future, his patented Jason talk about the past four years ;):

I have no idea [if I'll keep competing] - I was in this laughing-crying mode with Tracy last night. From the moment I sat down with them at the Cricket Club, it was about getting to this point. This moment ended, and I was like omg, what now?

The amount of knowledge that I have in this sport is just way too great for me to walk away without giving it to the next generation. I don't know what it will look like - coaching, choreographing, mentoring - 100% I want to give back

Me either. I’m sure many skaters will retire from competition, but that doesn’t mean they will leave the sport. It may be time for Jason to have fun (less stress). Performances, training videos, coaching, are all options for him. I’d like to see him team up with Ro in some capacity. When he completes his degree (which I’m sure he wants to do), he can teach school and skating. This will be a sad and exciting time for him. I wish him the best!!!

Setting it up in a separate post since people have asked.

Evidently there was a full length interview posted after my OP. The Chicago website even says, full interview posted now. Thanks guys😖

In this one, he talks about crying with Tracy:

They must have gotten a lot of attention with the edited video. I'm glad that they posted the whole thing. I believe Jason when he says he truly doesn't know what's coming next. He said it so well. Everything in his life was focused on skating, everything! Now, it doesn't have to be. When he says he gave his all, I think he is saying that he's at peace with his role in skating now and he's ready for whatever comes next. He's been so focused on one major goal for the last 4 years and he reached it. The future is now a blank canvas. But every skater who retires goes through a period of mourning. Ashley talks about it openly and often. At the level that she was at and that Jason is at, it is your whole life. And then it's.....gone. But the skaters are more open about it now and he'll have plenty of support while he ponders this and if he decides to retire, adjusting.

If they are going for diversity of countries, why did they excluded Junhwan Cha who finished 5th?

Im guessing some skaters leave shortly after their events, and thus not gonna be available for gala?

I can’t answer that but I think I read somewhere that all athletes are required to leave China /Olympic Village shortly after their last event. Obviously there would be an exception if you are scheduled for the gala. Anyway I’m not sure what their reasoning was and personally I would much rather see Jun (and Jason) than Morisi, for example. But I really don’t see it as a personal insult to either Jason or Jun.

Actually I prefer to think about the fact that Jason was only a couple points out of fourth!

I hope he gets called and decides to go to Worlds, too @fzztsimmons ! I have bought my train tickets and events tickets in this hope.

I think he would have a good chance at a medal, especially if Nathan decides not to compete. He was only 2 points off fourth at the Olympics, doesn't have anything to prove, and is missing a World's medal from his collection.

Also, I think my Jason/waistband theory was proven at the Olympics!

ah I thought i’d referenced the full interview - obviously didn’t!

in defence of keegan, the man had only been in china for three days by the end of the FS - by inviting him to the gala he gets to spend a bit more time in beijing, which i think is more than fair considering the slog and half round world trip it took him to get there! he also has an entertaining gala programme, as does morisi (he paints himself blue as the aladdin genie).

i still would have liked to have seen jason skate, but he seems pretty keen to get home to his family!

Video footage from the press conference here talking about his parents - the minute his voice cracked i was a gonner 😭😭😭

OMG this is so sweet. Poor Jason. He needs a hug right now. Apologizing for being so nice. How will “We” deal with him being out of our lives? It’s heartbreaking. At least we were lucky to have known him for this long. I got my tickets to SOI for the Hershey, PA show.

Not your fault, when I linked, I linked to a shorter version, because that's what they first posted. You'd obviously seen the whole thing(y)

And now the entire press conference is also on YouTube.

So so so much Jason content:biggrin:

Wow! Thank you for that link! It's Jason at his most honest self in a press conference. I love how he highlighted the volunteers and how welcome they all make him feel. And we now know that he's remaining at the games for another 10 days (from the news conference) and can hang out with his fellow team mates, cheer them on and enjoy the games. No rushing off. Nathan has said the same thing about World's, that he'll make his decision after talking to his coaching team. They both were so focused on this event, I'm sure neither one of them gave much thought as to the next and how they will deal with it. Jason said honestly that being first alternate is hard. As much as I'd love to see Jason at World's and see his incredible skates again, it would mean that he would be going right back into training at full bore. Hopefully Nathan will decide as soon as he has time to process what's happened at these games, but he's under no obligation to do so. We will see! As we have seen before, Jason takes his time making major decisions, which is a good thing. When he decides to commit, he really commits!

I hope Jason writes a book some day. He's got such a unique perspective and a unique career. And it might help him to process all of it in the writing. At the moment, I feel a lot like Jason. Jason brought me into the sport fandom with his Riverdance skate at Nats. My life hasn't been the same since. I've followed him avidly, gone to competitions which I never thought possible, learned a lot about skating and became invested in some other skaters over the last 8 years. Whether his retirement is now, or a year from now, that part of my life is probably headed into retirement too. On one hand you feel sad and wonder what's next. And on the other hand, you feel like it's time to move on. For him, it's his whole life that will change. But I am so grateful to him for giving me this diversion and passion for skating for the last 8 years. It kept me sane and gave me some wonderful experiences and memories. And I'm eager to see what he does next. But the end of an era is inevitably coming and I'm glad that he'll take time to process and think about it. And in the meantime, they will all have the fun of touring together with SOI, and I will have the joy of seeing them!

Jason might co-write a book with Charlie White about making individual sports a positive experience for all students. And about exiting elite sport.

Charlie impressed me so much in this podcast of Polina Edmunds'
