Kamila Valieva: Anti-doping Case and Follow-ups

I understand that it is a very complicated situation, but I have just seen Gubanova's story and I can only say: it is the cruelest thing I have seen all these days. It is not surprising knowing that Gubanova has not been known for being an elegant athlete but for being a little envious of other Russian athletes who stood out over her.

Not so fast to label her “Olympic champion”. She doesn’t have any gold medal yet, not even from the team event she has already skated. They postponed the medal ceremony for everyone precisely because giving her a medal is fraught with conflict. so not only does she not have one, other people can’t get a medal because of her. So, no if she retired now, she would not go down in history as Olympic champion but as a cheater. Sorry but this is the tragedy of the situation for everyone involved.

I don’t disagree… if they had decency and respect they would withdraw. But what with all the appeals and the ridiculous grandfather story doesn’t seem like the case.

If I were in her shoes, I’d withdraw and train squeaky clean until the next Olympics and show I can still win or if I’d show my best here and then on purpose do something at the end that would disqualify me (lie down for a long time on ice? Idk what but there must be something). And yes I’m taking into consideration that she’s 15. I am more than twice her age but I can remember being 15 and I would totally do something like this. I had a sense of fairness back then. It’s not like we’re talking about a 5-year-old.
I commented: if in the future she is acquitted of any accusation, she would still be named Olympic champion. If she is found guilty, all this chaos would have been for nothing.

Cruel is letting an athlete with a failed drug test compete against everyone else who is clean 😀

We don’t live in (some potential) future though. At present she doesn’t have any Olympic gold medals so she’s not an Olympic champion. That’s what I meant.

What is this story about - can anyone explain?

Is that story the cruelest thing? Or, is it her and all the other athletes having to compete with other athletes who are being dopped, working the hardest they possible could and constantly getting bypassed by other teenagers who they now know were likely being dopped?
I'm constantly amazed how some people hate truth tellers more than cheaters. Whistleblowers more than criminals.

Be a little more realistic. Chan had great skating skills, but his jumping skills were subpar compared to other men in his day. He really only mastered 4t; he tried to add 4s but was unsuccessful. And he landed his 3a only 50% of the time.

Chan was a great skater, but he could not compete with the Worlds best in today's world given his limited jump repertoire.
I totally agree. I was, however, only referring to SS and PCS in general. It should be okay to load (eg) Chen up for technical, and maybe PE, perhaps Interpretation... but neither his SS or choreography is particularly notable.

But yes, I fully agree that Chan was very hit and miss...

Where is this story? I went to Nastya G's Insta and I can't find anything.

If anyone should be offended that their Olympic moment may be stolen, it would be Sakamoto. Gubanova, please, if she finishes in 10th place, that's a lot.

I also believe that withdrawing on her own initiative (if nothing else, for the sake of Sasha and Anna) and going public with her explanation would be the best outcome for her public image and future international career. A medal at this event will only bring her misery.

Of course, if she is truly certain that she is clean and genuinely believes that there's been some horrible mistake, that'd be probably too much to ask from Kamila. But she will be hated and bullied in an unprecedented fashion. Already is: you can sense how the tone of discussion has changed after CAS decision. No one is saying "I feel so bad for Kamila but...". No one is saying "poor Kamila". As a matter of fact she is no longer referred to as "Kamila" but rather "Valieva" :D It's telling. Kamila is no longer seen as a victim, she's become an accomplice now, there's no more room for compassion and forgiveness. I shudder to think what awaits her if she wins a medal. This is so sad.
