2022 Worlds Pre-Game Chat

IMO on the contrary: it will be fantastic for the sport, a breath of fresh air. Valieva’s positive has put a dark cloud over figure skating and whether results have been legitimately achieved. There has been a problem with corrupt judging for decades. A much-needed clean sweep of the mess.
If you believe in fresh air then you should be fair aand get rid of PC and Sui & Han.

I honestly have no idea what would or should be done in that situation tbh. I think I would want Russia to retain it’s places (it would certainly be much better for the quality of the competition) but I don’t know. Maybe this would highlight the issues with how the ISU awards worlds places?
You are one of the few who thinks like this. I dont know what to say or think. I dont like what the Russia state/govt did. But I admire so many russian skaters skating. I dont care about their race or color or nationality. The country that will benefit the most I think is the USA men women, pairs and dance. Really increases USA medal chances.

I don’t really anticipate freshness. It’s just going to be a replication of men’s podiums in the three other disciplines. A former 3-way tie is going to become a 2-way tie between the Japanese and American skaters.I will be very surprised to see many other countries podium. Maybe, indeed, Smart/Dias? 🤷‍♀️ Hopefully, Uno gets silver. You probably won’t medal over the Japanese, though they might pull up Hendrixx if she skates better than in Olympics as a token.

I don't think You is without medal chances. Kawabe was unstable on both GP and OG, despite the JSF/Hamada push. If Kawabe brings her 3A and all her jumps, then she could podium, but frankly, her skating still looks a bit juniorish and mechanical to me compared to skaters like You or Hendricx. If You lands her jumps comparably to Kawabe, I'd much rather see the Korean medal, and I hope the judges will score her PCS accordingly. Same for Yelim. And let's not forget about Karen Chen who might deliver and finally get a WC medal. Last season, she beat everyone except the Russian trio. Liu is a wildcard too. Her medaling is not out of the realm of possibility.

My personal wish is that Karen Chen doesn’t medal. I don’t like her skating, b/c it’s so boring. At least the third Japanese woman is Kawabe, not Miyahara, so small blessings.

You’s 3As were slashed down so much in Olympics, it wasn’t even funny, and her PCSs in NHK a couple of years ago were terrible, which I assume will repeat itself. I’d rather they put Hendrix on the podium, tbh, if it can’t be You for some unfathomable reason.

Anything, but a triple finish by any one nation, that’s how the sport dies.

But Hendricx isn't in the entry list 😞
Well, I happen to like Satoko's skating a lot, so I'd take her anytime over the current skating of Mana. But she's injured and Mana was 3rd at Nationals, so no chance. Rino is stepping up quite nicely though. Pity she won't be at WC, either.

I just saw that. So, yeah, basically, Japan will dominate this worlds with 3 medals in women, 2 in men, 1 in pairs. Americans will take two pairs medals, 1–in men, and 2 in dance. There you go, as predictable as it comes. The only Eu medallist will be the inevitable P/C.

I am sorry that Miyahara is injured, but her skating ties to only one other skater in hilariously overrated department.

As an avid follower of Japanese ladies skating, I am not expecting a sweep of the podium. Kawabe can be a hot mess and has issues with the second mark. She’ll struggle to break 210 even if she’s clean. I think Higuchi and You are close, but Higuchi definitely has the better 3A. But You can beat her. I’m thinking the podium will be 2 Japanese, 1 Korean with Silver and Bronze being close.

Korea should finally gain a much-deserved third spot and the Americans should keep theirs when they were on-course to lose it.

I agree with the men’s podium: 1 American, 2 Japanese, with Kagiyama beating Uno. Kagiyama’s better than Uno and only loses to him inside Japan. Uno’s very messy in the free skate so I can see him losing to the second American or someone like Grassl. I’m very interested in how Malinin stacks up in this field. His goal is to apparently make the podium and if that happens then we’re in for some very…. fascinating skating. I think he’ll make top 10 and that’s even with the Russian men in the field as he’s better than Semenenko who was 8th last year. Top 5 if he’s really on.

Some other cool things may happen, like Italy finally gaining a third spot and Latvia gaining a second spot…. that probably can’t be used.

I really really hope Russia is allowed to just keep their quotas from this year. The Russian men worked hard to gain that third spot and to see that work get undone for things outside their control is just nasty.

For Italy to gain the third spot they will need to start judging Grassl differently than usual, give how unstable Rizzo is, so I don’t hold my breath. I think both US and Japan will push for the bronze in women with everything they got in GoE and PCS creds, so You is out of luck. Possibly, the two podiums will balance. If there is Uno/Kagiyama on the podium, then it’s Liu in the third. If Malinin steps on the podium, then it’s Japanese trio in women. At any rate, I think it’s basically between US and Japan in terms of who can out-component who. I am not sure if US has the same burning urgency yet to promote nextgen like Japan did with Kagiyama, so they might not insist on Malinin ascending straight to senior world medals.

I would certainly like to see Worlds happen. I feel like so many great skates were swallowed by the scandal. I still haven't seen so many skaters as I had a mini boycott and didn't watch the individual event. This time, hopefully, I'll be able to relax and enjoy it. However, without the eligible Russian Ladies, It won't be a "Real" World Championship.
Actually, maybe it will indeed be a real world championship of skating as opposed to quad jumping? I look forward to seeing , hopefully, well rounded skaters win instead of jumps deciding almost everything. I wish they would come up with a separate jumping competition for length, height, etc to satisfy the "skaters" who really only want to jump. I have nothing against jumps - just against the over rating of that ability over the real skating skills. If things other than jumping were valued higher than now in the scoring we'd see a huge increase in the quality of programs as skaters would have to concentrate on far more than just being gymnasts. I sure won't miss. seeing tons of quads with mostly skating around in between (although I did like some of Valieva and also the eventual olympic champion so I am not against Russians in particular - actually more just against the over rating of jumping ability). Anyway, it will be very odd without any Russians. But I bet it will be exciting regardless!!

honestly i can't help but admit i feel similar.

don't get me wrong the quads are exciting and cool to watch (when executed nicely) and i don't necessarily have an issue with anyone doing them, however the other side of the sport has been left in the dust and jumps are truly the only way to win and be competitive.

i do miss the days when the hardest element executed was a 3-3 and we were seeing more compete programs without long entrances into quads that took up most of the ice (and even time). i miss when programs with true commitment to the choreography, great transitions, good quality spins, outstanding skating skills and clean, solid triples were winning. like how it was 10 years ago, and of course there are some exceptions to this. but you needed other parts of your skating to be up to par with your jumps to win- you needed to be a skater's skater and the full package.

to me that is what makes a great skater.

If Russians wont be allowed to participate it will affect next years Worlds as well, because then Russia will only have one entry per discipline.
I think with the high level of talent in the Ladies, that they'll get another spot at a Senior B. The have so much depth that they'll have 2 spots for sure. IMO, of course. ;)

That’s not how it works. It’s solely decided by worlds previous year. The extra sports this time were for Oly as they are limited to total entrants

So, if Russia loses their spots, how long will it take to get them back.

Loena Hendrickx got added to the entries list! :giggle:

I'm annoyed that there was a real chance of seeing Sui/Han and Peng/Jin on the same worlds podium, only to see no skaters at all from their team!

It would only take a year for Russia to earn back their spots in pairs, women's and ice dance. Especially with the top ice dance teams retiring. But I expect their Fed to appeal for their spots if they did lose them.
