2022 Worlds Pre-Game Chat

I am in Japan to see my mum for the first time in over two years, and happy that I can watch Worlds on Fuji TV, though they are showing everything late at night (Pairs, Ice Dance, and the gala in the small hours). Delighted that Kazuki is in, though sorry that Nathan has withdrawn.

Anyone remember the twitter handle of the group/person who publishes those nice time conversion charts?
UTCs are so clumsy.
Also trying to figure out if Peacock doesnt stream, then NBC USA looks like it is doing a fair amount of coverage.
Seems like if someone wanted to make money they could make a USA app downloadable on Roku and charge money to see it....
Here's one:

I'm so happy that I can actually watch the men's free skating :hap10:rather than the Olympic timing where it was about 3 a.m. xD

Cross posted from the Nathan Chen withdraws thread...

I had earlier guessed Nathan would skate the Mozart program at Worlds and think this would've really been a Worlds moment - a potential tribute to war victims, but alas it is not to be.

On another note I can hear Jim McKay in my head (paraphrasing from 1979 World Gymnastics where Olga & Ludmila have retired, Nadia sits on the sidelines with injury and Nelli Kim stepped up to win the Championship - hearty perennial that she was).

The Russians and Chinese are out of the event, Yuzu and Nathan are injured and sit on the sidelines, Jason is off on vacation. For the US it will be Vincent Zhao, center stage, in the spotlight - all alone...

Of course there is still Yuma, Shoma, Ilia, Daniel, Jun-Hwa, Deniss...
It will be an interesting event for sure. I wish all those competing only the best at this event, may the best man win.

In the previous post-Olympic Worlds 2018 there were many poor LPs after a long season: Zagitova, Kostner, Boyang, Zhou... There was no GP Final this season, do you think the skaters have more energy and motivation now?

I sincerely hope so. I hope with all the open podium spots the field will be energized. But it seems just as likely that world events will further suck the life out of what is already normally the most tired event of the quad.

So happy you got to go back to Japan and see mum! It looks so beautiful...would love to go there some day. If you see my adopted grand daughter Ruriko, say Hi for me! I dont suppose you will be going to the Tokyo Motorcycle show? She will be there....would love to see so much there....Cherry Blossom time? Will be cheering for all of Team Japan......

I’m looking forward to this event.

Mens - With no Nathan Chen or Yuzuru Hanyu, this is an opportunity for Shoma or Yuma to win and an opportunity for someone to sneak into the podium. I’m rooting for Shoma to win and will be ecstatic if Keegan or Cha can make it into the podium. Will root for Romsky (redemption skate) and Ilia, as well.

Ladies - With no Russian, I’m looking forward to watching a quadless Worlds Champs. I’m clearly rooting for Kaori to win. This is her opportunity. I just hope she doesn’t get too nervous with being the favourite. Also, this is a chance for Wakaba to get another medal. I hope she nails those 3A’s. I want to just add that I’m sad there is no Mai at this event. Japan had a chance to sweep the podium. This is also an opportunity for Loena (love her 😍) Young, Lee (my fave of these outside contenders) and Alysa to make it to the podium. Rooting for Gubanova and Schizas, as well, for top ten placements.

Pairs - With no Russia or China, I’m really hoping the Japanese team can deliver and win.

Personal invitation to join some fans who still love skating for Worlds 2022 in the competition threads. I think most will just want to enjoy the skating while we can and escape a bit from all the other problems. I firmly believe there is some joy to still be found. Come for the polite Japanese skaters and those from the little Feds and from all the other countries who get overlooked at times. Come to cheer the Ukrainians who are bravely competing under such difficult circumstances. Come to see which dance teams finish in which order, see Zorro again. Can the US win their first world title since Tai & Randy or will Japan win a gold medal for its first ever pairs medal, will a Canadian pair win gold since Sale & Pelletier? Come for what will still be a pretty dazzling men's event. Will a Korean lady win the first medal since Yuna Kim?
Who gets a redemption skate? Who will bring us the most joy? Who will be the surprise of the event?

I'm really glad I've basically had a month off, because I was completely burned out in February but I'm genuinely excited that we're guaranteed brand new World Champions in 3/4 disciplines and most of my favorite programs of the season are getting one last hurrah whether or not they get rewarded with medals. Is the entire Pairs field advancing to the free skate here as well?

(edited for clarity, didn't want to make it seem like I didn't know smaller events have happened between now and the Olympics)

So, with LH injured, is it still below 50% chance for Gubanova, Kurakova and Schizas to be in top 6 or on the podium?

I already thought it was exciting and intriguing to have Worlds opened up to new possibilities. You've articulated some of the questions beautifully! :points:I was burned out for weeks after the Olympics, but my curiosity and love of skating rise again. 👑😍

Is that for just one of them to make it too too 6?

Even so, Yes. I would say the chances are below 50% still. Sakamoto, Higuchi, You, Lee (4CC), Liu, LH (injured) and Bell are top 7. Also, Karen Chen and Mana Kawabe are there. I think to be top 6, they will have to skate a 205+ performance and hope four of those mentioned contenders falter. Which, is possible. But, less than 50%

Schizas will have to skate like she did for the Olympic Team event for Canada
Kurakova will have to skate like she did at Europeans
Gubanova has to pray the judges reward her with the PCS she deserves

I really enjoy those skaters. I’m looking forward to this event.

Yep. Rhythm Dance(among other events) scheduled at almost 3 am again this season for West Coasters.🥴
As much as I love skating....and this event and 4 conts especially, I have to take special drugs to fall asleep and I am OUT. I will count on there being replays...if not, well, no drugs and all nighters I guess. This will be a very special worlds to me....in many ways.

Me too. The Worlds following the Olympics is always an interesting event. Michelle winning after Tara didn't go and Kaetlyn winning after Alina Zagitova bombed in 2018. Mao winning after Adelina decided not to go to Worlds.
What you said. For me, calling this event "interesting" is like calling the Titanic "Leaking" I like worlds much more than the dog and pony show the Olys has become. Worlds is the top of the heap. Lets hope there is free and honest judging and lots of medaling....and no meddling....so sorry for the skaters who are injured...stay well everyone and skate clean !
