I can't read French so I haven't read the article. However, I do know that thickening of the coronary arteries is extremely dangerous because blood flow can eventually be completely obstructed and if this happens the blood flowing through the coronary arteries will not be able to oxygenate the heart leading to a heart attack or transient ischemic attack. The risks are greater when higher demands are placed on the heart such as during stress or exercise. In fact, this is when people get chest pain signifiying that not enough oxygen is reaching the heart. People who have thickening of the coronary arteries can get balloon arthroplasty which essentially opens the arteries and a stent is placed inside to artificially dilate the artery. They have to take medications to control their cholesterol levels and sometimes blood thinners to prevent blood clotting.

well i can't read french either, but isn't brian joubert a little young to be having atherosclerosis already? i mean, what is he eating?? he needs to do south beach or something. or maybe he has something causing this genetically, like a familial disease raising his cholesterol... worrisome indeed. strange though, cause i thought athletes usually have stronger hearts and lower heartrates. even if he had some kind of heart issue, wouldn't have pegged it to be a "thickening of coronary arteries."

When my brother had a heart attack in his 30's, the doctor said that when the heart attack was that young, they classed it as genetic. Now many things have changed in the past 20's, so they may have changed that guideline.

Weren't Sergei Grinkov's cardiac problems ly genetic, AFAIR?

Thickening of the Arteries, I presume is the old Hardening of the Arteries in which case it it now called Alzheimer's Disease. I can't believe he would have that.

Let's hope this whole thing goes away and we can see a new revitalized Brian.

Poor Brian!!!

This sounds more like a vasculitis to me ie an inflammation of the blood vessels. Although most of them are associated with auto-immune/connective tissue disorders, it can occur after a viral illness....and it can cause all sorts of nasty things...occlusion, thinning and eventual ballooning of the vessel wall or thickening of the blood vessels.

This is a potentially a really serious condition and I do hope he doesn't have this!

Again, I read the french article and it didn't sound this serious. He seemed very relaxed and his only worry was training to be in top shape for worlds. One can only hope this is not actually this serious and he will be ok.

Huh? Why the Alzheimer's mention? There is dementia related to vascular issues, but Alzheimer's is related to the degeneration of neurons in the brain.

I'm a nutrition addict. One of my readings said 'hardening of the arteries' is now called Alzheimer's Disease. If one reads about nutrition as much as I do, one begins to realize how often things change. So maybe the reading was wrong and 'hardening of the arteries' may lead to dementia.

btw, whatever happened to 'hardening of the arteries'? No one mentions it anymore and I haven't seen it in the literature.

(Anyway I'm sure Brian does not have dementia)

Do you mean arteriosclerosis? That literally means hardening of the arteries but it's kind of a generic term. Atherosclerosis (the most common kind associated with age, blood pressure, high cholesterol etc.) is one of the 3 kinds if I remember correctly!

But yeah, alzheimer's is due to abnormal protein deposition in your brain...but a poor blood supply to your brain due to atherosclerosis of your blood vessels is just going to worsen the dementia anyway.

Anyway. enough of that stuff!! It's good to hear Joubert's doing better
