Coaching change for Kimmie

I would like to pause for just a moment before hopping on the "good for Kimmie" bandwagon. Isn't Kimmie going to college right now?

If you read the article in the first post Kimmie states that she is putting school
on hold for now.

come to think of it, maybe this is why Pam Gregory looked so grim after Kimmie's long program...because after the debaucle she couldn't help but feel as though she had failed her pupil.....I hope she's taking the split okay, but I think if a coach truly cares about her student she should also be willing to let her go too.....

I think this is a good move and he can help her with w/e she has to deal with also maybe he can help her artistically. I really liked the transformation he made to jenny kirk during the 02-03 season anyways best of luck kimmie rock em dead at worlds :agree:

I would not put the blame on Pam Gregory. It was Kimmie who was out there on the ice. Why she skated somewhat less than expected is probably for reasons yet to be explained except for speculation.

However, with Richard, maybe things will change for the better.

Do you think her staying with Richard C. wil be permanently, or will it depend on whatever results she gets at Worlds? In an article she wasn't very especific about the future, but she said that it was until Worlds, and then she would see.

I'm not blaming her at all! But how could you think it's not at all related? A coach's not resonspible for all their skaters' errors, but I'm sure in some way or another they're partly to blame, but I wasn't even blaming her at all ! I only suspected that she herself felt AS THOUGH she was to blame.

My post was directed to other posters who apparently were blaming Gregory and not to you specifically. I do agree with you that Gregory must feel badly.

It certainly remains to be seen what exactly is at the root of Kimmie's problems. If she has technique problems, then perhaps her new coach can help. If it turns out that her problems are mental, in my opinion, it will be a lot harder to solve.

I'm not counting Kimmie out at this point. She may skate well at Worlds which I hope will happen. As we all are aware, we need her on the podium to ensure spots for next year. Also, you never know how the "favored" ladies will perform. There is a lot of pressure on Mao and YuNa. Miki as the defending champion will also feel pressure, I'm sure. One thing is for sure, we are in for an exciting World championship.

If anything, this 'bad' year takes some of the pressure off of Kimmie. She's the underdog again. She might want to consider a sports psychologist, too. I remember that Nancy Kerrigan went to one after 1993 World's and between that and the better training habits, she performed 2 clean programs at the Olympics when she really never had before.

As for Alyssa, she need's a good sports psychologist. I've read somewhere (probably somewhere on this board) that she lands the jumps in practice and ultimately falters in competition. She said that she didn't have a lot of time to overthink last year when she silvered at SA and won SC. Then she had too much time to think about Nat's and World's and didn't do well.

Callaghan has a really good track record, esp w/ Tara and Todd. I hope he helps Kimmie not only with her jumps, but also with her presentation. After all that help, her arms and hands really turn me off.

But why does everyone always forget Arakawa?! She went to Tarasova just before Worlds, but had been with Callaghan all prior that season. HE really brought out the best in that Turandot program...just my 2 cents.

I haven't forgotten that! In fact we attended 2003 worlds in Washington, DC, and were stunned to see Richard and Shizuka in the Kiss & Cry on the jumbotron (the season before her world title). The change to Tarasova seemed pretty sudden, and IIRC, wasn't necessarily Shizuka's choice but that of the Japanese Federation (?). So, yes, I think Richard definitely deserves a good bit of credit for his work with her.

kimmie broke my heart at nationals. i hope this helps her at least begin to stay on her feet. i wish someone could help alyssa gain stamina and confidence and jump technique. when alyssa is on, there's no one i'd rather watch.

Yes, I remember something about that, too. The Japanese Federation just snatched Shizuka up and shipped her off to Tarasova, dropping Callaghan a note later. Shizujka didn't even get a chance to tell Callaghan about it herself, which made their next meeting a little bit awkward at first.

The Japanese federation then tried to smooth things over by offering Yoshie Onda to Callaghan, but Richard had had enough by then.

While she was in Detroit Shizuka lived with a very nice Japanese-American family. I don't know whether she suffered from loneliness and culture shock or not.

There was a cheesefest in Detroit that year, and as I recall Irina Slutskaya had to withdraw. So they rushed in Shizuka as a last-minute replacement, and she came within a whisker of beating Michelle. (She doubled her very last jump, which gave the judges enough of an excuse to let Michelle win. ;) )

What every happened to Yoshie Onda?

She retired after last season\\\'s nationals and became a pro skater (she skates in Prince Ice World shows).

JSF makes me feel so warm and fuzzy at heart. Not.
