Coaching change for Kimmie

Do you think her staying with Richard C. wil be permanently, or will it depend on whatever results she gets at Worlds? In an article she wasn't very especific about the future, but she said that it was until Worlds, and then she would see.

I have no concrete information to back this up but it seems to me like it was an effort to lighten the blow to Pam. I cannot imagine she could go back to her. I just don't see how that could work. Maybe I'm wrong. I don't know if she'll stay with Callaghan but I'd be surprised to see her go back to Pam unless she feels like she's worked out some mega demons while training with Callaghan.

According to an article in the Detroit Free Press, the rink is in Coral Springs, FL. Is that somewhere between Miami and Ft. Lauderdale?

Joe, I'm taking your comment as a little joke - a suburb for the NYC snowbirds?

Coral Springs is a part of Ft.Lauderdale. It is a little joke among NewYorkers. It's like go to Lauderdale for a brief visit and see all your old friends. Apparently, the Fla city is big retirement home for NYers and is also a second home for those who can afford it I found it overly hot an extremely humid, but that's me.

Ft. Lauderdale is so stinkin humid....

But, if it weren't for the hurricanes and my huge fear of em, I would totally plan on becoming a snow bird in my 'old age'... heck I'd have a winter home down there NOW if I could (But, I'm more inclined to living in Celebration, FL ;))

I've read a lot of local articles about Kimmie (I'm in Baltimore right now) and have actually skated with her on quite a few occasions and I think she may have been injured several months ago when her landing boot came apart after working on her 3lutz. I was there and it was worrisome. I guess what bugs me is that hardly anything has been written about her ankle injury-and maybe that's partly her fault since she wanted to down-play it, but gosh, she deserves a break. It's kind of sad to read things like "the demise of Kimmie's career' and similar things when it could be a very simple problem that just needs some rest and her dad's tlc! So much of the focus has been on the mental side of things but she had been landing her jumps pretty consistently in practice, especially the opening jumps in her freeskate program. Last time I saw her skate in person was less than a week before Nationals and she was nailing all her opening jumps and then boom down she went at Nationals. I think she may have over-trained and aggravated her ankle sprain. You don't always have to have pain to have an injury. Pure speculation on my part but she has always been a rock/such a strong competitor mentally and I think something else had been going on physically. After her 3rd fall in her freeskate at Nationals, it seemed like she paused, as if to compose herself. But what I saw was pain. I know I'm just guessing but I could really sense pain because I've never ever seen that look on her face before.

Anyway, I think the coaching change was an excellent idea and if I were her, having a choice between MD/DE area vs FL? it's a no brainer. Kimmie, we love you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well if you fall on your butt three times in succession like that it's gotta hurt...

Anyway, I gave her the benefit of the doubt earlier but clearly something is wrong. I don't know if she will be our Miki Ando or whether she truly has peaked and has had it with her skating career Not too late to turn things around though by any means.

Mandypants:

What you write makes a great deal of sense. In fact, I've even read a few brief sentences here and there about some kind of injury. So it is very plausible. There's just one thing I don't get. If her problem is an ankle injury, will dropping out of college, firing her coach, and moving 700 miles away make it heal faster?

I know...I think she herself has often said that it's "mental" more than anything. I must have been so frustrating for her to have landed all the jumps in practice and in gala performances prior to nationals, only to lose them again in Minnesota....What could this be really?

Maybe she just wanted some distance between herself and the Baltimore media? They don't seem to have been especially kind to her lately.

mandypants, thanks for the info about the injury you witnessed. It's always good when someone can offer some insight into a situation without intruding on a skater's privacy.

Perhaps she has been reaggravating an injury. Look at Sidney Crosby - he can't play for a couple of months due to a bad ankle sprain. Even a "simple" sprain makes you lose strength in that area.

I suspect her problems have been a combination of growth, injuries and confidence issues.

Well, "the media" is all-pervasive nowadays - this forum you're on (and where that link was posted) is part of the media. Which is why young skaters are advised to stay far, far away from the internet.

But I do think perhaps a change of environment could be good for her. Meanwhile, an article said she was continuing some UDel classes online. And if she relocates for a longer period of time, well, they have colleges everywhere. :)

I don't know why all of a sudden rumors about injury are popping up. If she was landing the jumps before Nats and then all of a sudden collapsed once at the event, it must have been a confidence issue. The problem was deep-rooted enough to get her to move to Florida...if it was an injury or equipment issue I don't think she would have made that drastic of a move.

Well

I think she should go to college and have a life. Callaghan was not able to fix Jennie's problems and I would be surprised if he was able to fix Kimmie's. Tara was not having problems when she went to him. She was on an upward path even then. So we are talking apples and oranges here. I don't believe she can remain competitive at the World level. At the most, she should give it one more year and if it doesn't make a difference, go back to school.

Huh? Because there was an ankle injury publicly discussed before Nationals, and as I said above, sometimes that has repercussions long after the fact. But obviously she thinks there are other issues that Callaghan can help her with.

As a longtime Kimmie fan I'm actually *hoping* it's a confidence issue. Because unless that was so bad - like the pitchers who start throwing wild pitches and can't stop or golfers with "the yips - that's the easiest of the problems to fix.
