Anna Shcherbakova

Wow Anya is really enjoying her off season. She is a natural for the media and endorsements and obviously photo shoots and interviews. I wonder about her competing next season I hope she does even if she doesn't get her quad's pack because she's such a beautiful skater with tremendous artistry which is sport needs more of.

Not a surprise. Anna doesn’t look like the type that will just go through the motions.

Happy birthday Yana! Hope she has a great celebration with family and friends!
Let's be healthy and happy every day.

(Also: born in 2007  this is when you really start to feel old because I think Anna started skating in 2007???)

Yes, she started at the age of three. I remember her telling about her first time on the ice, how she was given some advices but thought "why to listen to it, that's so easy" and then stepped on the ice and instantly fell and fell and fell, poor girl

It's such a funny story because many people can relate to that part of the story, just not the rest of the story where she becomes a super champion etc. 😆

You can teach jumps, spins, and all the other technical stuff, but you can’t teach the intangibles. That’s what separates the good from the great. Anna is the Intangible Queen.

Speaking of learning, I believe she can be a great coach one day, who wouldn’t want to learn under the Anna tree?

SSHOR “ANNAhilator” has a nice ring to it.

And the logo can’t be a bluebird or something tame. It has to be a bulldog or a lion or something mean like that. Or at least contain big claws. Haha

I agree she could be an incredible coach with the most amazing insights, but at the same time as you say, it's the intangibles that really sets her apart from so many. And I don't think that can really be taught, she just learned how to manage herself in a crazy good way as she was coming up :dance3:

Anna Shcherbakova gave an interview to the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper:

Translation:

Tears of Anna Shcherbakova on the podium of the Olympic Games, her gold obtained by incredible work with an exorbitant level of competition - all these emotions have already become the history of our sport. Now Anya is only 18 years old, she has a whole life ahead of her, which she begins with worldwide fame. What will happen next, how to find yourself in this world, which is sometimes even more cruel than the world of sports?

This season of the Ice Age project, Anna picked up the microphone and decided to try herself as a presenter. And in the very first episodes, she showed that she was up to it. We wanted to talk with the champion about Beijing and the future, but the petite girl with a straight look immediately put us in our place: “I will only talk about the Ice Age, more about nothing." It was useless to argue

- Anna, congratulations on your debut as a TV presenter. Are you comfortable with a microphone in your hands?

- Probably, it cannot be said that from the first episode I feel like a fish in water, that this is immediately mine, and everything works out for me. But I'm definitely interested. It is good to develop in this direction. And I understand very well that if I took up this work, I need to do it well. Now I listen as much as possible to advice, to criticism. I want to progress, correct some shortcomings.

- When other people go out on the ice, do you have a desire to perform?

- To be honest, at this stage of my life, I do not want to act as a participant. On the contrary, I like that here I try something radically new, I don’t skate. This is a development in a direction not related to figure skating. It seems like I understand something about this, because the project is about figure skating, but at the same time, my work is something completely new for me. First, this is the first time I'm working with the "ear" when we're recording introductory information. Secondly, for the first time I do not answer questions, but ask them, which is also not as easy as it might seem. So for now, that suits me perfectly.

- Did you immediately join the star team of the project?

- At the first rehearsal, it was the most difficult for me. You see, in life I am not a sociable person at all. Of course, I feel very comfortable in the company of friends, relatives, acquaintances, those whom I know well. But it's always hard for me to meet new people. It’s easier for me when they speak to me than to start it myself. Therefore, of course, at the first rehearsal I was very shy, I sat on the sidelines, except that I said hello to everyone. But after the first episode, when I was already asking everyone questions, everyone got to know me, I already talked to everyone, it somehow became easier. I can’t say that we communicate closely, but at least when we see each other on the set, I already feel much more comfortable.

-We saw you walking along the corridor and everyone was smiling at you, Danya Milokhin greeted you very warmly. Did you get along quickly?

- I don’t communicate with them outside the project, but during the filming I try to support everyone, and they support me. And there is no longer any tension ... Perhaps there was none on their side, but it was hard for me at first. But now I am already calm with everyone, benevolent, friendly, on good terms.

- You say that you listened to criticism. Is there any criticism? Yagudin praises you, and Averbukh, and everyone around!

- I am very pleased that there are many positive reviews. It's great when people speak positively about you, but I heard it, and somehow it immediately went away. But I listen very carefully to any minimal remark: it’s better to do it like this, hold your hand like this, look at the camera like this, or mention something in questions, refer to something. It's like in sports, when you go to the goal, you cling to everything that can help you.

When someone praises me, I will say: thank you very much, but what was wrong? What am I doing wrong? This is necessary in order to improve. That is, it is not enough for me that someone just praised me and that's it. I am glad that, perhaps, for the first time I did well, but I still want to go forward. Yes, and I myself know that I have some shortcomings, and even if everyone tells me that everything is fine, I still understand where something can be corrected.

-What are mom and dad saying? Are they strict or, on the contrary, do they praise you more?

- They just support me. I can’t say that my family somehow praises me, but they don’t really make any remarks to me. They can probably advise something, but in general they simply support all my undertakings.

- Everyone praises your competent oral speech. Family upbringing?

- This is probably the totality of everything. It’s hard for me to evaluate myself, but in principle, even after my very first interviews, where I was very nervous, worried, they encouraged me, they said that everything was working out well, you express your thoughts perfectly. The role of the presenter, of course, is much more difficult than just answering questions. So now I'm trying to do it.

- What are you studying?

- I still have a lot to learn. The presenter should feel confident, you need to behave correctly in the frame, present yourself correctly, speak correctly. Lots of great tips that help me.

- Alina Zagitova helps you, does she already have a lot of experience working on TV?

- Of course, we have known her for a long time, about seven years for sure. And we communicate quite a lot, especially in the last year or two. And, of course, we are very comfortable working together.

Alina has been here for the third season and tells me many points, she already knows everything here, what and how to do it. And it’s easier for me to join the team when Alina is nearby, who will always help, tell me.

- What kind of relationship did you have with the Demiurge of the project, Ilya Averbukh?

- I had my first experience of working with Ilya this summer, before the exhibition in Sochi. He put on a gala concert for me. We had seen each other before, I somehow participated in his show, but this was the first time we worked together. I think that at that time we had an impression of each other, and even then I realized that he was listening to me, even in the production of a play, in which, of course, he understands much more than me. But Ilya was always interested in how it would be more convenient for me, better, as I see it. I really enjoyed working with him. I think we immediately formed some kind of connection, and I skated in his show for quite a long time.

- This is your first experience as a presenter. Do you see yourself in this profession in a few years?

- To be honest, I can't guess at all. It is very difficult for me to say what will happen in a few years, everything is changing very rapidly. After the competitive season, I set myself the goal of trying everything new, trying to do it not just somehow superficially, but trying to show my maximum everywhere and understand in which direction I would be interested to develop further. Now the project will be over, and I think it will be a tremendous experience for me. Because immediately getting into such a big show is a huge test and good luck. You were immediately introduced headlong into such a large-scale business, where you immediately learn a lot. And even if I then develop in another area, it will still be a huge plus for me, this work will have a positive effect on me anyway. Therefore, I am happy to try it, and then we'll see how I succeed, how interesting it will be for me to move in this direction.

- From the outside it seems that you have some kind of strategy for life after a sports career. What do you think will happen to you in 5-10 years?

- No, I have everything planned for a couple of months in advance. I know what I'm doing now, and usually these are projects that will keep me busy in the next few months. And what will happen next, I don’t know yet, I live not quite for today, but for the near future, let’s say so. So far, there are a lot of offers, and I don’t see any reason to refuse them, because it’s really interesting to me.

- Do you make up questions for the participants yourself? How much time does it take to prepare?

- Differently. While we are having team competitions, I need to take a mini-interview with six pairs for the program. On average, about three questions per pair. On the air leave, of course, less. Sometimes, I know for sure that I really want to ask this and that to a particular couple. But most of the questions are born during the skate, because they are related to the performance or ratings. I would call it thoughtful improvisation. That is, I do not come to the shooting with ready-made questions, I mostly come up with them during the skate. And when the interview itself begins, I already know what exactly I will ask. Still, I'm not so pro yet to pick up a microphone and rally, without thinking, start a conversation with the participants.

- The organizers do not scold in the "ear" that you are moving away from the script?

- Not. On the contrary, they welcome it very much. In interviews, we are given almost complete freedom and do not write scripts. Because a person will always look much more organic if he asks what he came up with. Asking other people's questions, it will be clear that this is not entirely yours, maybe even against you.

But if they give me some advice or tell me how best to do it, of course, I always listen.

- Legend of the project - Tatyana Anatolyevna Tarasova. Unfortunately, she was not on the first episodes, but now, thank God, she has returned. It is clear that there are health problems, but still. How did she meet you?

- Of course, it is a great honor to work with Tatyana Anatolyevna. We greeted each other, she praised me. This is a person from whom incredibly powerful energy immediately comes. I'm very glad she was on the set. I wish her good health.

- The world of figure skating is outwardly very attractive - flowers, spotlights, soft toys, but inside it is quite hard. Do you somehow feel this rivalry between the teams?

- I think this question is better to ask couples who compete among themselves. I can speak from my own experience. When we have team competitions, the same Channel One Cup, maybe the viewer feels some kind of toughness of this confrontation, but I am very comfortable. From the inside, the skaters do not have any anger, aggression, tension between themselves. And this is very close to me, I am not a supporter of some kind of negativity, struggle, rivalry, confrontation. There is passion, yes. In jokes, some kind of rivalry sometimes slips. This, of course, everyone has. It was a lot of fun to get together with guys from different teams. In our company, after the competition, jokes slip through that the blues are against the reds, but only in a positive way. I think that at the "Ice Age" the participants are also kind to each other. Positive opposition may be present. But much more important is the cool friendly atmosphere within the project.

- Are you, a professional, interested in amateur performances?

-I think it would be strange to seriously evaluate the performances of pairs from the point of view of a professional. If, after the skates, I say that they got on the wrong edge, stumbled, made the wrong turn, it would be strange. On the contrary, we, as professionals, understand how difficult it is for those who started skating as adults. Moreover, girls and boys make paired elements. That is, the boy is also responsible for the girl during the performance. And if you know how to skate, then you look at these performances with even greater delight, and when we admire something, it is absolutely sincere, and not because we are fake and trying to pretend that it is cool. For them, it's really cool. And sometimes they do things that, in principle, look cool even for professionals. You just need to understand the specifics of the project, but in general we have absolutely sincere assessments and comments.

- Well, now open the main secret - which pair are you rooting for?

- Maybe there is such a pair, but I won't tell you that.
