2023 U.S. Nationals Sr. Men's Free Skate

So, let me get this straight… the winner of the free skate tonight can’t go to 4CC or Worlds 😭

This is who is see US sending:

Sr. Worlds - Ilia, Jason, TBD (wish it was at least Maxim)
4CC - Maxim (😍), Jimmy and Camden (every time I write Camden off, he gets selected, wish this spot would go to someone else);
Jr. Worlds - Lucas, Jacob (😍), Robert

Does Andrew have minimums? It's been a while since his last international. He'll need to get them, I think.

10 points. The fact that Jason was that close despite having no quads is telling, but even if he'd landed that last jump he wouldn't have made up 10 points. It would have been hellaclose though.

Ilia needed a bit of a reality check before worlds. He was on the verge of getting too cocky. Every top skater has that moment when they get reminded that the ice can get the best of them.

Jimmy Ma finished 5th which is one step up from his past two nationals. Good for him.

It boggles my mind that ten minutes after Ilia skates--a program that included multiple types of quads--anyone is convinced about where he should skate and how he will finish in future competitions. I believe it's possible that skating in shows will help him develop his performance skills and make it easier for him to relax at Worlds.

I'm going to make a wild prediction that he finishes either first or second at Worlds, and if that turns out to be wrong, anyone is free to mock me in the most derisive way possible.

I'm happy for the medalists, and glad to see Torgashev establish himself on the senior scene--hopefully, soon, internationally as well!

Hmm, I think Jason should have won - there was less than 2 points in it, and Ilia was massively over-rewarded on PCS in the short programme (and in the free).

Ilia does have the artistry - his gala performance at Espoo was really good, but it gets lost in the competition because of the emphasis on jumps.
I would have been thrilled with a Jason win but politics wise it makes no sense. Given that Ilia has potential to win Worlds they wouldn't want to send him there after losing to Jason if they could help it.
