Milla O’Brien & Laurin Wiederkehr (Swiss Jr. ice dance team) have split. Milla's family have relocated to the US, so sadly the team cannot continue together.

Very disappointed to hear this. I really, really liked them, and had already started gathering up information to make a Fan Fest for them.

But, all the best to them both for the future.

Oh, and Milla - when you do find a new partner, don't forget that your Dad's homeland doesn't have a top level Ice Dance partnership... ;)

Wow, that's a surprise. Sure, he was one of the older pairs skaters at 31, but I wasn't expecting him to split with Alisa after getting her released and waiting a full season to compete with her. Sad to hear that lack of federation support is once again a common theme and a significant factor in his retirement. (Hovke/Kunkel already talked about having to fund their training in Italy themselves, and thus having had issues with getting his back treated before Worlds)

How unfortunate for Alisa that she's now once again left without a partner, is there any good male pairs skater searching? She's just 23 and still has some years left in her career. Though I wouldn't fault her for giving up and retiring either, it must be a very frustrating situation for her too.

It is starting. It saddens me a lot, I felt Germany was on the way up in (pair) skating again. I wish them both all the best for the future!
I assume we'll see Hase/Volodin debut next season, if he gets released from Russia in time, so Germany will still have three good senior teams, but it's still a big loss for sure.

Not sure if this is about funding though, sounds like they had different attitudes towards training and results.

He lists three things that caused him to retire: Fundamentally different approaches to skating by him and Alisa, issues with his mental health and that the federation would not offer them the same support next season as they received this season (i.e. he would have to invest a lot of his own money or crowdfund).

Which one of these issues was the biggest is up to him to know, and for us to speculate. If it was just the approach to skating, I'm sure he'd be able to find another partner (not like he hasn't had a large number of partners before).

I wonder if Alisa could pair up with Daniil Parkman? He did train in Germany at the beginning of the season. Not sure where he is now tho.
Honestly, considering Daniil Parkman wants to leave the Georgian fed, that could be an option.

But Alisa is also very short (ten cm shorter than Anastasia Metelkina and 42 cm shorter than Daniil), so that might be an issue.🤔

(Seems that Daniil was in Japan just now at Worlds as a spectator and to support team Georgia, so that's interesting)

Thats interesting, I mean he is friends with the skaters leaving Georgian fed wouldn't changed that but still kinda odd he came. I still would love to know what exactly went down between him and the fed to cause him to split from Nastya and want to leave mid season less than a month prior to big competition?

Who knows, maybe they told him that Nastya Metelkina would pair up with Luka Berulava after the season ends if Karina didn't get better, and he was offended by that?

(While this is meant in a jokey way, I would not be surprised to see Safina/Berulava splitting and Metelkina/Berulava pairing up)

Tbh I wouldn't be surprised either.

When I read the news my initial thoughts were Mikhail Nazarychev, if he hasn't already found a partner in the U.S. He's slightly shorter than Daniel but still rather tall.

Alisa has stated that she is not giving up on skating and several potential partners have already contacted her. Good luck to Alisa!

yeah i do see them pairing up next season if Karina doesn't get better by the end of off season. Either way they need 1 more pairs man and I dont think there's many good ones free rn. Its easier to pair up Nastya with Luka and wait for a new partner to materialize for Karina while she gets enough time to heal that way.

I do wonder where Nastya and whatever partner she gets will train, im assuming her current training situation is temporary.

If Skate Canada didn't release a statement upon their retirement then yes, that is an oversight. Sales/Wamsteeker had a wonderful presence on the ice and were skating at a time when there were other strong teams. So they absolutely deserve to be recognized for their contribution to the Canadian team and Canadian ice dancing history.

No statement from Skate Canada...... which I honestly think is appalling. Also not conducive to the athletes mental health.
Not defending Skate Canada but at times they have issued statements at the end of the season... Also, W retired but S has not... so maybe a bigger announcement with new partner is coming...
