that's what I would have thought some time ago... but then the Israel rumours were very strong with that one... :)
Diana was born in the USA... I guess the field is too deep for that... in any case, I will be still rooting for my favourite Georgian team !
The US is too deep, Eteri has no power there and also theoretically speaking Georgia is probably an easier switch to sell in Russia than the US. Given Eteri's current power situation in Russia when Russia is unbanned I wonder if there will be a switch back, probably easier to do going from Georgia to Russia than the US back to Russia.

A switch back? I doubt it.. unless they want to sit out another season. I mean, they have sat out already one entire season... the whole point to switch is to compete. Seems counterproductive to me. I never thought they would represent the USA... but as mentioned by many, it seemed like Israel was an option.. It probably was but they chose Georgia in the end so they could hang out with this wonderful lady...

Switching to Georgia (and Cyprus) is actually being encouraged, by skating "journalists" in Russia anyway. Here is an article that appeared during the 2022 Junior Worlds:

https://www.sport-express.ru/figure...vich-i-pochemu-oni-vystupayu-za-kipr-1909386/

And here is the English version in Google Translate:

https://www-sport--express-ru.trans...yu-za-kipr-1909386/?_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_tl=en

I put the term "journalist" in inverted commas, because it is obvious that the writer did not do much research into the skaters she was talking about. Well, the Cypriot skaters anyway. Because if she did, she would have found out that Stefania and Angelina were not skaters that switched to Cyprus to further their careers. They actually grew up in Cyprus. Their families live on the island. It is home.

I wrote a post giving off about this article in the Team Cyprus Fan Fest a couple of months ago. So, if you want to read more, see here:

https://www.goldenskate.com/forum/posts/3124539

But, we are talking about the Georgian team at the moment, so back to them.

Personally, given how unpopular Diana's mother is internationally at the moment (and rightly so!), I am not surprised that they gave up on the idea of having them represent Diana's father's country, America, or going down the Israeli route via Gleb, and instead opted for Eteri's father's country. As has been shown many times over the years, Eteri has a lot of influence there too.

I just hope that Maria and Georgy do not miss out on assignments because of the arrival of Diana and Gleb.

Donations have climbed past the halfway point (just over $13,100). Yay! :cheer: Vanya posted an Instagram story/ message, thanking supporters, and citing the halfway mark. This is good news. As their dilemma and the gofundme link are shared, donations steadily rise. 👍

I'd rather give my money to Eteri personally than to the Russian or Belarussian fed, but okay, it's everybody's personal money and decision.

The donations are being given to Bella & Vanya to help them realize their dreams. These talented young skaters should not be prevented from moving forward with their career together. Those who are interested in helping this young team reach their goals, view supportive efforts to help in this positive light. Hope, caring, love, joy, youthful dreams, and the beauty of athletic pursuit, are worth nurturing! Viva Bella & Vanya! 💪✌️✨

ETA:
I'm not sure why you bring up Eteri. She has nothing to do with Bella & Vanya, or their fight to continue pursuing their dreams.

It was basically just an expression to show how much I wouldn't do this.
But like I mentioned the problem shouldn't even be put on a the individual people, the ISU should have better rules and ruling for this.

For sure, they should! But we are dealing with the ISU, an institution that lacks fresh vision and suffers from a lack of creative leadership. The ISU is woefully lacking in the dedication needed to push figure skating forward, while effectively & fairly supporting all the athletes.

I have a question and wasn't sure where to post it, so I have opted for this thread, as it is connected to a country change that I have been told about.

We have frequently complained about Junior and Senior skaters who switch country not being allowed to represent their new country until 12 months after their last international competition for their old country. But, does this also apply to the other levels? Do younger skaters also have to serve an embargo?

The reason I ask is that a skater who has been representing Estonia for the past 2 seasons is returning to the Cypriot team. (She last competed at the Cyprus Championships in 2019). I am not naming her because of her age, but she has been training with Anna Levandi.

I am very excited, because she has turned into a very promising prospect. Rink Results has 9 competitions listed on her page, all of which had big fields. And she was on the podium in SIX of them (2 🥉 Bronze Medals; 3 🥈 Silver Medals; 1 🥇 Gold Medal), including her last four competitions.

After one competition at Chicks level (where she won the 🥈 Silver Medal), most of her competitions for Estonia have been at Cubs level. She has also competed at Basic Novice level twice, winning the 🥇 Gold Medal in the most recent of them (January 2023).

I don't know what level she plans to compete at when she returns to Cyprus. But, given that she has already won a Basic Novice competition, I would guess that she will be competing at one of the Novice levels.

Her last competition for Estonia was at the end of March, but I am not sure if this event (the Olympic Spring Cup) had international status. Her last competition that I definitely know had international status was in the middle of February (the Tallink Hotels Cup).

So, will she have to wait until the tail end of next season to represent Cyprus? Or, is she good to go straight away?

It depends if she did ISU internationals. If she only did club level internationals, there is no waiting reguardless of level. If she did isu internationals, I believe the wait is reguardless of level.

Edit: Tallink Hotel cup has interclub competition as well as ISU International competition, so check which one. For the lower levels I think only interclub though?

Mmmm. I always assumed all Chicks and Cubs competitions just had Interclub status. I thought ISU status only kicked in at Novice level.

But from what you say, it sounds like competition status is even more complicated than I thought. :drama:

As for her Basic Novice competitions (which were at the 2022 and 2023 editions of the same event), I just checked and the organisers of this event only had the Junior and Senior competitions on the Entries / Results page for the ISU part of the event. All the Novice level competitions were on the Entries / Results page for the Interclub part of the event. Which is different to what we find at most events, where at least the Advanced Novices, if not all the Novice levels, are on the Entries / Results page for the ISU part of the event.

Based on all this, it sounds like she might be able to start competing for Cyprus straight away. :cheer:

Thank you for the explanation!  :points:

:thank:

I posted the below info in the new partnerships thread, and in the U.S. pairs thread. The rumor has been confirmed (via photo evidence on Jenni Meno Sand's Instagram story) that Katie McBeath & Daniil Parkman have apparently partnered.

Daniil was formerly partnered with Anastasia Metelkina, repping Georgia (Metelkina has since paired with Luca Berulava for Georgia, after his split with Safina). Daniil has Russian roots, but he skated for Georgia. I would expect that he and Katie will have to sit out a season internationally, but they're of course, eligible for domestic comps.

It would be interesting if Parkman already obtained his release, or if he somehow has U.S. ties. In any case, if Daniil has to wait for his release, I sure hope he won't be held for ransom like Ivan Desyatov has been re Belarus. 🙁 I think the payback demanded by Belarus, has been requested in large part due to Ivan's stellar promise with Isabella Flores. When Ivan left Belarus, for sure, he was not being rated as valuable, despite his obvious talent. Being matched with the best partner means everything in fs (and in life), but it's also random and unpredictable.

l understand the excuse that some feds want payback. IMO, skaters already pay back all expenses accrued through all their hard work training, traveling, and competing. There are no certainties in fs. Athletes are out there fighting to build their careers. It's totally egregious the way athletes are treated by feds and by the clueless ISU! The very suggestion that ransoms are requested because athletes might "take advantage of feds." Nope! It's completely the other way round! 😡

There are sports where I can understand it - for instance in long distance running where it's common to just buy some Kenyans or Eritreans if you're an authoritarian regime that wants some medals... Then it makes sense to put up some rules that make the switches more difficult.
It's entirely different in a sport where you need a partner while at the same time the pool of potential partners is very small. If you or your partner can't switch that usually means you don't have an adequate partner at all and can't compete at all, at least not on your level. The country which hinders the switch doesn't gain anything, it's just to keep potential competition away or, in this case, to make money.

A sports association like the ISU shoots itself in the foot by not coming up with a better system for this, but I am assuming they gain something from it personally.

Is it a joke? Dr V says in his and Alina's Ig stories that he is going to a new chapter as a pair skater. In the photo he is lifting a girl named Tilda Alteruud. Edit. From Valtter's personal ig https://www.instagram.com/p/CtcF9d-r7Z6/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
Huh, that's quite surprising. Valtter is already 36, which is on the older side for switching disciplines, but I guess his struggle with getting Worlds TES minimums last season left quite an impression on him.

Tilda skated with Gabriel Farand for Canada last season, and previously was a singles skater for Sweden.

Well.. if this is true... I am not sure why Tilda would leave Gabriel for a 36 years old inexperienced in pairs, skater. Strange.
