If we discussed ideas for Meril and Charlie, maybe we start discuss, what we want to see from Tessa and Scott too?
I want see from them dance in baroque style

I want them to skate a rock n roll FD. Something other than Latin and waltz, for sure. They are in danger of getting pegged of being too narrow if they do a 3rd waltz or gooey love story FD in a row.

And I want to be sure they practice the Quickstep well ahead of time. They never did really do as good a job as they could have on the Yankee Polka. It would be embarassing to be beaten at the Quickstep at 4C's by D&W.

Oh, no - not rock n roll, please. And it could be original dance at Olympic season/ Maybe it will be good for D/W- they are fast, very technic
As for Quickstep - Tessa and Scott had really good Quickstep in 2005 - it was really fanny, light and Quick :)

Yes, they need a depature from the last too seasons. Somthing with drama and tension. Not a tango, or anything spanish... I am not feeling that from them, but perhaps "requim for a dream" from the lord of the rings soundtrack.

Next year's quickstep is the new Finnstep, not the old quickstep CD. It's very intricate and it's new to all the couples.

There will be a temptation to skip 4C's and not have to learn it, I suspect, by both V&M and B&A. And that would probably be a mistake.

I'm not stuck on rock n roll-just something radically different from waltz romance or Spanish romance.

Is the Finnstep only going to be required at 4CC's?

I remember reading a few years ago that Scott was looking forward to the Finnstep (when it was first announced that it would be a compulsory dance).

I fear that Igor will return to Latin, because he's stayed away for it for two years -- which is a looong time in Shpilband years.

I don't think V&M have trouble with quick-stepping CDs/programs. It's just that they hated the Yankee Polka. My guess is that they don't like the YP because it's one of the few CDs where there's no real relationship between the partners -- it's just a perky/happy dance designed for the audience. This also may be why D&W did so well with this dance (not to be a slam against D&W, but since they're still in the process of figuring out how to relate to each other, it was probably a relief to get to dance to something where they didn't have to. Besides, they seem to be able to do perky well.). ;) As npa mentioned, V&M did have a foxtrot/quickstep OD a few years back, and they did very well with it.

Yes I am desperately afraid that Shpilband will be unable to resist Spanish for one of his teams. I don't want any of them doing Spanish/Latin unless its unavoidable in an OD.

I am sure V&M are capable of doing the Finnstep very well, but I'm not at all sure they will like it any more than they liked the YP. It's also a very light fluffy dance, more romantic than the Yankee, but not much. That's why it was first called the Sunshine Quickstep. It's not a shock that W&L who also did a mean polka were chosen as the demonstrators for it.

I can't access your Finnstep video right now, but I remember its moves being a little less "silly/stilted" than the YP -- I personally like the YP, but some of its moves remind me of something I'd see in either Disney World or on the MIckey Mouse club. I don't remember the Finnstep looking like that, which is why I'm thinking V&M might like it more. But of course I'm just making things up out of thin air here. ;)

I'd like to see them get a little weird, a la Pechelat/Bourzat's Insanity FD, or the Kerrs' Alien FD. They could definitely stand to go outside the Romance Box next time around.

I like "requim for a dream"
Maybe they could show something interesting on ballet music? I

I'd like to see something like this as well -- but it'll only happen if they get choreography from people other than Igor and Marina.

I hardly think Valse Triste and Umbrellas of Cherbourg were tangos or spanish!!

They are an excellent team and imo, quite ready for the Oly podium with the possiblity of gold.

Perhaps a spiffy sexy upbeat Fox Trot a la Astaire and Rogers. or a unique Gene Kelly/Cyd Charise MGM dance.

Bear in mind, this couple is doing quite well without us butting in.

Joe

What do you think adout something chinees for them?
Or maybe "Prince of Egypet"?
Or something, like "Matrix"?

Can you imagine the result if they should get Cristopher Dean as their choreographer besides their excellent coach Shpilband?

It would be something unbeatable.

It wouldn't work, they wouldn't get the voids.
They need Shanti Rushpaul. She would be just fantastic with them.

Music suggestion

Boy, I was so happy to read this thread and could not resist thinking about it all night.
I fell in love with V/M for their craftmanship and musicality that I used to feel from Gordeeva and Grinkov. I am a big believer in Marina's choreography and can't appreciate enough for their effort to bring the the true essence of Marina's unique vision to life. Not only that I became a lover and supporter of figure skating but also became to understand music better through the interpretations and movements of skaters. Being a musician myself, I believe that good choice of music shows skater's class and style and I cannot express how much I enjoyed being inspired V/M's skating...it is my first post...so please bear with me :)

1> Light and airy Baroque music along the line of Naomi Lang and Peter Tschernyshev's 2001-2 free dance program where they used J.S.Bach's "Air on a G String" for the expressive section and Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" for the stormy foot work. There are tons of unused music like Bach's Brandenburg Concertos No.4,5,6, and Vivaldi's Violin concertos in this category.
Also, Canada is known for producing world-class Bach-performers like Angela Hewitt and Glenn Gould. Why not look into Angela Hewitt's recording of Bach keyboard concertos as well?

2> Music from the Swedish movie "Elvira Madigan." I say this not because they won their first World's medal in Sweden but because of Mozart. The story line and the visual aspect of this movie made the slow movement of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 in C (K 467) shine. The quality of this movement reminds me of the two slow movements of Chopin Piano Concerto No.1 and 2 from Gordeeva and Grinkov's 1998 LP... through this program I became a die-hard figure skating lover.

3> I am also surprised that I haven't seen a memorable skating to the music and story of Stravinsky's "Petruchka." Marina should know the the puppet story from her native country that can highlight especially Scott's passionate and Tessa's subtle side in harmony that would be fascinating to watch.

4> Wagner! What about the tragic love story of the dramatic "Tristan and Isolde"!!!

5> Mythical and ethereal impressionistic French music. I was inspired while listening to the "Isle of Joy" by Claude Debussy. I am not sure if this piano music by itself is enough for high profile figureskating program, however, I thought the idea behind the music was something that I wanted to share with V/M. I liked the fact that it builds up like Ravel's Bolero with an exciting ending as well.
In order to explain my ideas, let me talk a little more about the painting that might have inspired the music. "L'Isle joyuse" is known to be inspired by Antoine Watteau's "Pilgrimage to Cythera" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Antoine_Watteau_035.jpg). It is a Rococo painting about the pilgrimage of men and women, who are in love, lead by the cupids to the mythical island called Cythera. Far in the scene a boat is waiting to take them to the island that is hidden behind the foggy clouds. The music is about these men and women getting closer and closer to the unknown island of love... and may be finally getting there, I hope :)
For the actual music choice, I would like to suggest Debussy's Image Book 1 (Reflets Dans L'Eau, Mouvement), "Nocturnes, for female chorus & orchestra, L. 91" and "La Mer", and Maurice Ravel's "Sheherazade." Combination of such music can suit beautifully to V/M's fluidly expressive quality.

7> A combined idea of 3> & 5> can be done through Debussy's Cello Sonata which portrays a story of a Pierrot and the moon. I hear the music along the line of the movie "Cyrano de Bergerac" where Gerard Depardieu played Cyrano. In this movie I loved the scene where Cyrano poured out beautiful poetic lines in the dark woods. The camera captured the trees reaching all the way up to the moon. Someone in the post previously suggested something oriental for them. I am Asian and I grew up with the story of a drunken poet confessing his love to the moon reflected in the water then drowned while trying to reach to the reflection of the moon... Tessa can be Roxanne... the moon...

8> Finally, my personal request! Anything by Nat King Cole. For me, the best quality of V/M is the lovingness in their expression within composure and tasteful style. I was listening to an episode of NPR's Jazz Profile about Nat King Cole one day and was touched by Natalie Cole's comments about her father's romantic singing style... "Keep it simple. He didn't do any acrobatic stuffs with his voice but let the ear of his audience interpret it."... then, for some reason, I realized that this was how I felt about V/M's skating... maybe for an exhibition number?... please :)

With Love and Best wishes,

jyshin

I like the idea of Sheherazade or Samson & Delilah for Virtue and Moir. I could also see them skating to Nina Rota's Romeo & Juliet but that is quite an overused piece of skating music.

Another one: Claire du Lune, but maybe not for a few years.

jyshin you did really good work! Oh, i want Nessa and Scott will read your post.
backoutsideedge i like r Samson & Delilah, but think, that Romeo and Juliet is not a good choise for them - they must change there style, i think

Thank you "npa"...
I also would like to encourage V/M and any skaters/choreographers to take a look at the documentary of Mark Morris and Yo Yo Ma's collaboration to put together a dance to J.S.Bach's Unaccompanied Cello Suite No.3, called "Falling Down the Stairs" It is incredible to watch and so much to learn from it.

Following is the clip of the Gigue movement.

The actual documentary not only shows the entire thing but also the process of making the film... I was impressed with how closely Mark Morris studied the score trying the understand the detailed articulation, harmony... of the music.
