2023-24 Canadian Figure Skating

Maddie did show that she is till Canada's # 1 lady by a long shot. But that is also because ever since she popped on the scene at Nationals a few years ago Skate Canada have been sending her out. The good thing about Maddie that I see is that she can put a bad short behind her and skate a great free. But without 2 good back to back skates she has no hope of making the top 10. And yes she placed second at SCI in the free but that was with a great clean skate. But it did only score 132+. And with the scores some of the others can achieve she still will be hard pressed to make the top 10 at worlds even with a similar skate. And really if she makes the top 10 do we have any one to step into the 2nd spot.
In men's as mentioned above no one seems to want to step up and take charge. They all seem to be skating at the same level and not achieving good results. In fact I am not sure any of them can make the top 20 at worlds skating the way they are. Yes they have the added pressure of knowing they have a chance at being the next CAN champ but we do have 2 going to worlds so that should reduce the pressure knowing they can come 2nd and still prob make worlds. And let's face it, if they do not start showing well soon they will not be marked great at worlds no matter how they skate. Look at what happened to Conrad last year.

Really hoping for a silver for P/M this weekend! It would almost certainly secure them to GPF. Otherwise I think they will come up short on a tie breaker.

Maddie cannot score much higher at this point : her BV is quite low, repeating toe and loop. She would need a second lutz in the program... but then, I prefer she keeps her layout and skates clean than other layouts with messy results.

But if she can start to skate clean consistently her GOEs and PCS will increase. That shouldn't be dependant on history, but we all know it often is.

A clean SP = better starting position = higher goe and pcs as well

Madeline has landed both her triple flip attempts this season quite nicely, which is a very positive trend if it continues — long term that should allow her to put it in the short program instead of the loop.

Men’s, sigh. Eventually one of our promising guys will not grow to six feet, right?

Unfortunately she seems to get nailed internationally. I agree, she seems to have excellent choreography and decent expression that is developing. But her jumps are chronically under rotated. That really needs to get fixed. She has great lines, but just doesn't have the power or pop that someone like Maddie has, whose jumps are very rarely under rotated compared to most skaters. For example, when her Lutz combination is on, the rotation is super clear in the jump is clean as a whistle. However, kaya almost always has a hook on her jumps, and although it's less obvious than some skaters, nonetheless, she gets called consistently. If she can tidy that up, I see her scores increasing significantly. But she hasn't really made much progress in the last couple years, and if anything, she has continued to add more technically difficult elements, without addressing the rotation issue. Perhaps that's a good idea, because she'll have the muscle memory when she gets a little more power and quicker rotation. But I wonder if it will be like nam, and many other Canadians skaters who never address notable weaknesses in their basics, and at some point they reach their Max and just can't get any higher.

I don't disagree that she needs to work on her rotations. It'll take time and they probably would've noticed the calls she's been getting for them. They could be working on the rotations, but getting the correct technique done under pressure is a different thing entirely. It was her senior Grand Prix debut and it didn't go as well as her other senior competitions did. It's got to be a letdown when she's coming in as the National silver medalist, but none of the National silver medalists here had the outings they were looking for.

It's hard to extrapolate how any of the single skaters will do for the rest of the season based on SCI, other than Maddie will likely be going to Worlds and repeat as National champion with Kaiya likely as the silver medalist. She's getting the experience that she'll need to go further.

Now please send her to Zagreb so that no one has to try to get their Worlds minimums at 4CC.

I guess the SP BV is not that bad...Only 0.4 more by switching the loop for a flip. Putting an extra lutz in the LP has a bigger effect 5.9 versus 4.2 for the 3toe.

Sure... all the ones who are in next gen... and most specifically all the ones who had JGP assignments.

Hetty Shi, Kara Yun, Rose Théroux, Aleksa Volkova, Uliana Shirayeva, Lulu Lin.

Of course, with these young skaters, they have good and bad events. But they all have 3-3 combos already and are promising. A few years ago, only a few skaters had 3-3- combos in Canada, now, it's the norm for many of the top juniors.

All the skaters need to get out there as much as possible. Even if their results weren't good here. Senior and Junior.

Like I'm alarmed at what Conrad said in his Golden Skate blurb after the free at SCI where he's worried about getting assignments in the second half of the season now. This isn't a healthy environment Skate Canada is creating for the skaters to compete in.

The men aren't going to get the results they need if they have the pressure to get them in their two initial assignments, neither are the women. Maddie's getting pressure to get a second spot for women at Worlds when the other women aren't getting the results they need to earn their TES minimums.

There's been a lot made about how Mark Gorodnitsky has been so consistent when a) he's not jumping quads in competition and b) he's heading into Warsaw Cup next week, which is his fifth international this season. He wouldn't be getting the chance for having a fifth international if he were representing Canada with no quad. He wouldn't be developing that consistency if he had decided to represent Canada instead since he wouldn't be getting out there.

Two international competitions before Nationals is not going to develop the depth that Skate Canada wants in singles.
