2023 Denkova-Staviski Cup | Nov 7-12

Not sure what to make of the programme by Jessica WORTH (GBR) that took us into the resurfacing. It started with an accoustic cover, and I was enjoying it during the first verse. But once it reached the chorus, the singer started over-doing it. Then for the second half of the programme it changed to the original version by Irene Cara. And the two versions just did not go together.

But the skating was good, and she went into 4th.

My newest kid Varvara is currently in 2nd position. It took until skater #10 for her to lose the lead. But, she is only 0.97 behind Martina SANTIA (ITA).

Wherever they end up by the end of the competition, it is going to make for a mighty battle between them in the FS tomorrow!

Group 3 Warm-Up on the ice.

Just to warn you, @norwegianfairytale, the Bulgarian skaters that are topping and tailing this group have withdrawn, so Ella will be the second to skate rather than the third.

And, as you have probably noticed, we are waaaaay behind schedule!

I see what you mean about Ella being very tall.

Hello, Maurizio. This is the second time today somebody has done a tribute programme to you!

Have to be honest, that would be an absolutely beautiful Royal Blue dress if it didn't have that white corset design on the front of it.

But, I was really impressed with the skating. It's hard to believe she has only been doing competitions for 3 years and that this is her first international competition. She looks like she has been doing it forever!

11th?! I though she would be a lot higher than that!

Mind you, she is just 2.94 points behind 4th position. That's how close a competition it is.

I really enjoyed that. Looking forward to seeing the FS.

I didn´t miss it. So much fun watching Ella, at times she was crazy alike Mia, but I swear Ella must be taller or at least have longer legs?! They even have the same blue ribbon in the hair!

Fun program to Alice in Wonderland, and fun choreographic moment with the gloves, it reminded me a lot of Mias IT program where she also did hide something in her hand

I think she will be pleased as she has scored 25 points recently in domestic competitions, and she had a fall on the 2A now. Scores tend to be very close in novice category, so a lot can happen  Anyways, looking forward to see her skate again, she surely is a performer and it looks like she moves fast on the ice!

I was going to celebrate that this group was opening with probably my favourite piece of skating music, "Lux Aeterna" by Clint Mansell. However, I don't like all the sound effects in this recording of it.

But, my goodness that was good!

We could have another Italian causing problems for Varvara.

My kid from Cyprus was the second skater in the opening group, and now my kid from Bulgaria is the second skater in the closing group!

(OK, so I haven't made a thread for Vayana yet. But that is because I don't know when exactly she was born. All I know is that she turns 13 some time this season).

Vayana and Chiara have always looked VERY alike. So, now that the older sister has dyed her hair blonde, it will be interesting to see if the younger sister decides to do the same.

Well, if she is going to, she hasn't yet.

:cheer: ALL THE BEST VAYANA!!! :cheer:

Oooh, very sultry.

But, I can't say I am a fan of the dress. Colour is nice (red and black), but too much illusion mesh.

Fall on first jump.

Better on the second. Spins good.

Very nearly a fall on the next jump. How she didn't, I don't know!

Made up for it with the rest of the programme.

Into 7th position. 0.58 behind 6th position, Jessica WORTH (GBR), and 0.01 ahead of 8th position, Fatma Inci INANC (TUR)! :jaw:

To be honest, I think she was fortunate. She could very easily have been much lower, especially with how close this competition is.

:cheer: WELL DONE VAYANA!!! :cheer:

Hang on, what is going on with Amalia TUMANIAN? She has a Ukrainian flag next to her name again. Has she switched back after a couple of years representing Italy?

And if so, how is she allowed to compete here? She was representing Italy at the Bellu Memorial in February. Should she not be under embargo? Or at least skating "out of competition".

Well, she went into 18th, behind Ella Risa Gomez. But her two former Italian team-mates have now pushed her down to 20th.

Entries / Results page for the ISU part of the event is finally up:

http://cup.clubdenkovastaviski.com/2023/ISU/

As expected, Chiara Hristova and Mia Risa Gomez are joining their little sisters in Sofia.

And the Irish flag that I spotted at the rink is for my fellow Ulsterman, Dillon Judge. (Kinda disappointed that none of the girls are there as well, though).

Day 2 kicks off with a Basic Novice quadruple-bill! And it starts with a girls triple-bill. 26 younger girls, followed by 20 middle girls, followed by 16 older girls.

First up are the 26 younger girls, who are arranged into a group of 8; followed by two groups of 9.

Livestream for the Basic Novice III Ladies FS is now on air.

It's a real pity that the livescoring isn't working this morning. Because I'm currently 5 minutes behind due to popping in and out of the kitchen to make toast. And I am trying to keep track of what stage the live action is at while watching delayed.

I reckon that another skater that I have been keeping an eye on for the past few years, because I am intrigued by her surname, is due to be coming on around now to conclude the opening group.

:cheer: ALL THE BEST MILICA!!! :cheer:

Awwww. We finished the opening group with two girls from Serbia. And as the first, Olga, was coming off the ice, she gave a high five to the second, Milica.

It's lovely seeing the camaraderie between the young skaters.

Going into Group 2, Mileca is currently in 3rd, while Olga is 2.23 points behind her in 4th.

My goodness! We don't just have one Serbian skater here with the same surname as a famous tennis player. We have two!

We had a Djoković in Group 1, and now we have a Jovanović in Group 2! :drama:

Actually, given her first name, I think this girl could possibly be named after a footballer. There have been a few footballers called Ivan Jovanović. And one of them went on to be manager of APOEL, one of the big teams in Cyprus. (I have no interest in football, so I think I must have seen his name in a newspaper when I was in Cyprus one time, and the name just came back to me there now when I saw Ivana's name).

We continue our Basic Novice quadruple-bill, and complete the girls triple-bill, by moving from the middle girls to the older girls. There were supposed to be 16 of them, arranged into two groups of 8 girls. But, there has been one withdrawal from each group, so it is now 14 girls, arranged into two groups of 7.

We complete our Basic Novice quadruple-bill with what was supposed to be a group of 8 boys. But since skater #1 has withdrawn, it is now a group of 7 boys.

Something I noticed during the last group of girls. They are not wasting time waiting around for skaters that are obviously not there.

The announcer is going straight to calling the name of the skater due on after the missing skater, and while they are getting into position says that the competition will not be delayed because the skater did not show up for the Warm-Up on time.

I like this.

CaroLiza_fan

We complete our boys double-bill, and at the same time start an Intermediate Novice double-bill. Like with the Basic Novice boys, skater #1 has withdrawn. So, instead of a group of 5 boys, it is now a group of 4.
