Jason Brown

The fact that he’s going to be doing a show in Japan a week before Worlds suggests to me that he’s either not expecting to be named to the Worlds team or not prioritizing it. 🙁
Or maybe to him it is not just a show.... sometimes when you put friends first, it is not because you do not care for these other things like your work etc. but just because they belong to a different order of things in your life, so in your mind they just do not compete with each other and are not mutually exclusive... just a thought :)
Anyway, they could have agreed upon it last March straight after the last year's show when Jason might not have himself expected to compete this season... Which, even if, would not change the previous sentence one tiny bit....

Twelve years ago, Jason Brown won Junior Grand Prix Final in Québec. Sorry, I didn't find his Free Skating, but in the Short Program he was already a fascinating skaters, with great mastery of his blades, a coherent style, and what a final spin!

Jason considers a show good training for a competition. Once he has his program planned and choreo solid, any repetition is practice. He gives everything he's got when he's skating shows. At this point, he has no idea whether he will be named to the World's Team or not. I don't think it makes a huge difference in how he plans his life. And he enjoys being in Japan and spending time with Yuzu. They really are friends.

He did this last year and it worked out fine, didn’t it? Granted, Worlds was in Japan at the time, but I don't blame him for not prioritizing it (I definitely expect him to be named to the Worlds team). At this point in his career, renewing friendships and further developing his artistic qualities sound like perfectly good priorities to me. 🙂 Jason's a seasoned competitor, I'm sure he can cross that bridge when he comes to it...

I had not seen that before. What a great skate! I couldn't help but think what he would have thought watching himself at 27 or 28 doing step sequences. He would be shocked and impressed. The speed the content! The seeds were all there. It just took 10-12 years to get there! Thanks for posting this.

You made me think that in Notte Stellata, unlike in other shows, the rink is likely to be at least 26x56m, not 20x40m, so he will be able to skate his programs in their competitive layout... but with dim lights, which is an additional difficulty. It must be an interesting practice.
In Montreal anyway it will be a very unusual size, 28x61m:

First, I wasn’t criticizing Jason, just making an observation. I don’t know what his priorities are, nor would I presume to judge him. I do think he looked a bit rough at Warsaw Cup but hopefully he’ll pull himself together by Nats. I also think that if he’s named to the World Team and does the shows in Japan he’ll likely be pretty jet lagged while competing. But I’m sure he considered that possibility before committing to the show.
