Can she still jump? If so, that would be pretty cool. Or, she could be Canada's Isabella Flores (5'0'', aging out three years before her partner who is too tall for her). Hopefully she will team up with Bruce instead of wasting years in limbo.

I have no idea if she did single skating. I think she will find another ice dance partner if she wants to continue. Look at Kieran.. he did just that.

I am okay as well but really hoping Hetty will get isu (junior) in Europe so gains experience and profile. I love her skating style and emerging ice personality, but (broken record) needs more competition experience as well as isu points.I was reading Lulu's ISU bio.

Oh dear, just checked her birthdate. She turned 15 after July 1, 2023 (bd 2008.07.28) so only 14 in isu years for 23-24 season. So 3 more years of junior only. are my calculations correct?

I think that's correct. Hetty will have her share of junior opportunities....

Hetty is 28 days too young for the next Olympics. Shiryaeva, who is just a year older than her (June 2007) was already eligible to compete senior last year. I know there are always people who miss out barely but this really shows how flawed the new age rules and grandfathering was.

I thought it was funny you posted this because the article is just out.... and it's the same with hockey. The players born just after the deadline for categories (january first) have a much higher chance to reach the NHL.

Hetty doesn’t really have a triple Lutz, which is the required solo jump in junior this year, so realistically they were never going to send her to Junior Worlds.

No coincidence if you look at the top male ice dancers and sometimes pairs skaters. Savitskiy July 1, Lickers July 1, Beaumont July 24, Chen July 21, Markelov July 10, Giang July 9, Horovyi July 28, Cain August 14, Smolkin August 27, Verslius July 18, Tashcler August 29, both of the Goncharov brothers (although they lose a year of eligibility to their partners who are only 1 ISU year younger than them respectively).If you can read French or simply use a translator.

Out of the top 12 at JWC last year, only three are born in the younger half of the ISU year: Daniel Mrazek, Ilia Karenkevich, and Alexei Kiliakov.

Yeah - I know! I was born at the end of December - right at the end of December - in the last few hours of December. I was always the youngest in my class until I finished university. Intellectually was okay but socially and for sports was difficult until I got out of teenage hood.If you can read French or simply use a translator.

But I guess the line needs to be drawn somewhere. Somebody will always be advantaged and somebody disadvantaged while in the growing years.
For racehorses, I recall that the registration of birthdates of foals may have been (were likely) fudged if born before January 1. Big advantage in maturity and size if the foal was born close to the beginning of the year but if the mare foaled too early - a disaster. Let us hope that a similar practise doesn't occur with children! (thinking about past controversies in Little League Baseball)

If a line has to be drawn, July 1 is a sensible date, since more births (in the northern hemisphere, at least) occur between July and October than in the rest of the year, with the highest number in August. My birthday is in late August, as is my longtime pairs partner's. (Also my husband and our youngest kid. Our twins were supposed to be July babies, but were June preemies.) So you get more athletes clustered around the same age physically if you use that cut-off date, which obviously matters more with developing child athletes than it does with adults.

Sure but I believe that the July 1st marker is because of the new season beginning for figure skating. That way, nobody suddenly becomes " too old" for their age group. For music competitions, I have often seen a deadline based on the competition dates and not the registration date, exactly to avoid having a kid who is now suddenly 13 playing in the 11-12 years old category

Good point. In Highland dancing, in my era anyway, the age categories up to mid-teens just went Under 7, Under 9, and so on by your age on the day of each competition throughout the year, with the big outdoor Highland Games coming in July and August. So there were a couple of years where the August Games were on a later date than usual in the month (based on the availability of the venue in Stanley Park in Vancouver) and I'd be in one age group in July and then just a few weeks later find myself shunted up to the next level with bigger kids for the other Games because I'd had a birthday inbetween. One year the competition happened to be on my birthday, and my mother phoned the registration office to ask whether "on the day" meant midnight the day before or midnight of the day itself. I could hear her getting more and more exasperated with a very fussy official and she finally snapped, "So you're saying because her birth certificate says she was born at 11 a.m., she dances the Sword Dance scheduled at 9 a.m. with the Under 9s, but for the Reel o'Tulloch scheduled in the afternoon she has to dance with the Under 11s?!"
