I really hope they end up sending Roman just to see him skate at one more event. I didn’t even think he deserved to be sent to 4CC. After the result, his 217 score is already higher than any Canadian man, behind only Chiu and Gogolev (injured?). I think only Chiu has a chance for a top 12 finish this year. Roman is the guy with the strongest chance to make the free skate. Also, his world ranking would put him in a better flight of skaters too. I’m looking forward to the announcement.
I think they want to send him, so I hope he does make the free if he goes. Not for the spots, more that I don't want to see the two men who go not make the free. Hopefully they give him an event before then so he can get more mileage before then. I just want to see them end the season on a good note after the last few weeks.

When I saw Kaori Sakamoto doing an event prior worlds... you know... She's twice world champion and getting a "run-through event"

Says it all.

Or doing the summer events that Dave Lease saw as being beneath her. It must not be that if it's helping her achieve what she has. I also noticed Miura/Kihara are competing at Challenge Cup too after their issues with injury this season.

There should be a good balance between competing too much and then the Skate Canada strategy. Most of the domestic competitions in Canada at this time of the season are not for the seniors, so that isn't an option for the skaters.

Like I've said before, I think the lack of international assignments for more of the skaters probably comes down to money, plain and simple. As in Skate Canada literally can't afford to send skaters out as much as they (and we) might like.

I think it's clear. At the same time, it's a very well-known problem and something needs to happen. They need to find more funding if it's not enough. I know. Easier said than done. But that needs to happen and quickly. Otherwise, Canada will be an ice dance nation(with some pairs at times) and that's pretty much it... And in some ways, Canada is doing better in pairs and dance because there are less competitive teams from less nations out there.

Totally agree. Their lines !!!! Fiona and Gabriel it's more about the energy, the presence.
This being said, who knows how Fiona and Ben would look together ;)
If Gabriel indeed retired, Fiona does need a partner. I can see the reshuffle happening. I wonder what Thierry is doing. He is such a strong singles skaters and partner...
I have also recently seen Ben skating with another Oakville pair girl. Just looked like they were having fun and not too serious.

Yes when Skate Canada increased its general membership fee for even the little kiddos doing CanSkate to just even step on the ice from $44 in 2022/2023 season to $58 in 2023/2024 season; it did not look good and nor bode well with the parents of recreational skaters.

Oh, maybe it's just a rumour then. Bc Brooke was in a video last week with a boot on so obviously she is off the ice. It would make sense for Ben to skate with others for practice in the meantime. Until there is an official announcement, it's just heavy speculation. Bc I really didn't see much wrong with the pairing minus mediocre programs this year.

At the very least the US and Canada need to host one senior B in February. One year Canada, next year US, rotate east and west coast. There are other international skaters that train in North America to help fill the slots.

Just want to give my 2 cents... and we all know how much that represents literally in Canada ;)

It is very top heavy now. Yes, Max and Deanna may not be in the game in a couple more years after the games but the other senior teams are all relatively young and could keep going for a while. Trennt would be the oldest one and he won't even be 30 yet after Milano. Lia will still be in early ages as a pair skater.

So, in light of that, we need to expect that many skaters will retire, split, move on... do whatever. I am still not cool with Emma and Nic calling it a career because they most likely would have made it to Montreal worlds, but in some ways, they probably made the right choice for themselves. I bet some of the current pairs will consider other options than ompetitive skating too.

Also, when considering the junior teams Canada has... well.. WOW... Ava and Yoni are just amazing to watch. Marly are incredible in their first season together. Jazmine and Kieran have so much charisma. AniKole are two times Olympic youth medal winners, including the top prize in pairs... They are super young and have solid triples already.

So yeah... is Gabriel done ? That would sadden me very much because he is so fine ! Is Fiona looking to keep going and skating with Ben while Brooke is injured? Perhaps. Is one of our best male partners of recent years, Thierry, done ? Maybe but then, there are so many good single skaters in Quebec who may want to give it a try ??? Is Brooke injured to the point that her career is in jeopardy? Probably not. Is Zach Daleman planning a return ? With another Russian ? ;)

My point is that, we need to expect musical chairs... but until things are said and done, any guess is probably just as wild as the previous one.

PS I needed to edit this : let's not forget BEAU !!!! She's a star in the making !

Great viewpoint and summary. Ava and Yoni have improved so much since adding Barkell to their coaching team. It seems Dawes and Barkell are doing all the right things with this team.

i would so attend a senior B in the winter months in north america.
I love my summer /early fall events but often skaters are not that ready for them... sometimes, they even skip the LPs/ FDs

You need to write a letter fo Skate Canada and USFed :)

OT, but I wonder how many non-Canadians are aware pennies were done away with years ago here (also 50-cent coins, and $1 and $2 paper bills)? Must be a shock when they visit for competitions and wonder why they can't get the exact change they expect when they buy a $2.49 item (plus tax) and try to pay with a $5 bill. :scratch2: Have nickels also gone yet? I read they were to be the next coin axed, but haven't used cash for a long time and haven't noticed. Something to warn Worlds-going tourists, anyway.

i don't use cash either ;) but i think the beaver is still there.

Nice to know. (Other countries have a lion, or an eagle, or a leopard as their symbolic creature. We in Canada have a large wet rodent.)
A large wet rodent, who is also an exceptionally hard worker!

I think a lot these days about things like inflation and world events, and how these will affect the sustainability of the sport. It may be necessary from a $$$ point-of-view for NA skaters to prioritize more local events (love the suggestion of a NA spring international!). It's not just Canadian skaters/associations struggling with $$$, look also at the Germans, and also the junior pair skaters from Great Britain and the USA with GoFundMe campaigns.
