Skate Detroit

Carmen/Knierem certainly seem to have the tricks - no doubt about it. Their quad twist is "wow" She has that same fearless quality that McLaughlin has.

For them to give M&B a "run for their money" will need to see a substantial step-up in presentation though (just IMO) - as pairs to me, the really impressive ones, depends so much on the relationship expressed (and I don't mean just 'romantic' ... that's but one dimension) between the skaters. It is the absence of this quality (in some meaningful way/shape/form) that always colored my views on pairs like Totminina/Marinin... impressive with the tricks, but much to be desired on the 'chemistry' communicated-by-their-skating front.

What bothers me about C&K's quad twist is that it looks like she is doing nothing to assist in the take-off. It seems like he is just hoisting up a sack of potatoes and tossing it into the air. I don't mean to take away from what they have accomplished, but it might be problematic when she grows and he can't throw her like that.

I'm kind of dumb for the names of Lifts in Pairs skating. Just what is a Quad Twist?

It's what it sounds like it is. A twist lift is where the male skater throws the female over his head and she spins in the air and then he catches her and sets her down. A quad twist means she spins 4 times before he catches her.

A twist lift is a required element for the pairs short program, so if you've ever watched a pairs short program, you've seen one.

I got what you are saying. It's just that, from the C/K clip, I do not see her rolling over 4 times in the air while in that horizontal position.

Who said anything about horizontal position?
No one said anything about a horizontal position except me as if we didn't already know that.
OK I said I was a dummy about Pairs lifts, but the way the lift goes into the aire she seem's to turn in a roll over body in a horizontal position as one would roll over in a large bed.. That's just the way I see. If that is not seeing the quad, then pray tell me, how do I see 4 turns in the twist?

After watching it again, I see the horizontal posiition in the air and she is rolling over... 4 turns? probably. just difficult for me to count. The second jump is definitely less rolling over.

Does anyone not see the horizonal position to the ice in the air?

Are you talking about a lateral position twist? It's not required, but some teams (many of the Chinese teams, for example) are able to do them that way.

Thanks again for offering more on this. Lateral is a much better word than horizontal.

I am talking about a lateral positition in the air twist. I can't seem to grasp a verticle twist (unless it was a throw). It seems to me that it was a lateral twist that C/K were doing in that youtube clip.. He did not carry her, She was lateral in the air. Is there another position this could be done?

I think the original question was about a Quad Twist. Is that the same as the lateral position twist? If not what other air posiition could a Quad Twist have?

I'm sorry that I am not being knowledgeable about lifts. I grew up with the lifts of Henie and Kirby in movies, and later with Starbuck and Shelly in newsreels. The au courrant level of lifts seem so acrobatic and vaudeville to me.

A quad twist could be lateral or not. Quad just refers to the number of times the twist rotates. Quad = four times. Lateral just refers the relative position of the lady in the air. If her body is parallel to the ice, that's really lateral. But most twist lifts don't get to that position. They are more at an angle.

Here are a whole bunch of twist lifts (double and triple twists) on youtube. Some get more lateral than others.
