2024-25 Canadian Figure Skating

My fingers were twitching on a phantom keyboard. I used to play the Fantasia (as probably all piano students do) before I sliced the tendon in my left thumb and had to drop piano and concentrate on singing instead. I wouldn't have thought of skating to it, but she made it work!

I've seen a couple of solo dance performances, but not at her level. The others got repetitious after a while and I found myself waiting for jumps that didn't happen. I want to know how she does those kneeling twizzles, or whatever name they've been given, without snagging a blade. I won't try them without knee pads, though! Ouch.
I confirm to you that the Fantasia is a greatest hit among young students... :) especially since it's quite short compared to a Sonata and the opening is very beautiful. The faster part is not my fave... and I guess Emmy didn't like it because she replaced it by the 3rd mvt of the A minor sonata which was an excellent move.

And yeah... her routine rocked.

I had a hard time following the RD : patterns and step sequence driven... just like in partnered ice dance... but the free dance was awesome... And no, I didn't need the jumps ;) (and I love a good quad!)

It is unexpected to say the least.
I am not really that surprised by it. Conrad kept talking about maybe not getting assignments in the second half of the season -as if it meant something even more this year - and skated poorly at nationals.. he made the 4CC team but also didn't do very well there. He seemed to be struggling to achieve a balance between his education and figure skating. I sort of felt that it was going to be the "last year" of this sort of season. Either he was commit even more seriously to being a full-time athlete or either he was going to work and or study. So in that sense, I am not surprised. On top of that, Canada lost its second spot now for worlds, the chances of him going back would be extremely slim as I expect Wesley to rise up in the rankings next year.
Conrad had a great run.. but guess what, he is THE skater I have never seen skate live... crazy considering I have been to many competitions and have seen many world champions and pretty much all Canadian skaters. (I haven't seen Nathan Chen either which is a pity but it's not like he competed so many times in Canada (Vancouver 2021...) to start with and I don't go overseas to watch skating). But yeah... I will survive.

I mean, he could still be competing and have an arrangement with his work... he could even visit Ravi in Edmonton, or train with the Murphys. He did spend some time at Champs a few summers ago... So who knows..? It's not like he would have a hard time to make it to Nationals and compete for fun like some skaters do (most skaters from Québec at this point in time aim to just qualify for Nationals in mens singles). But yeah... end of an era for sure.

I hope Edrian doesn't get the same idea but considering he is struggling with his tech minimums, it's possible.

Regarding with Edrian as I find out with what is going with the ISU meeting especially with the possible removal of the 3 jump combination that in my mind that his chances getting the tech mins in the FS is putting the final nail on the coffin on Edrian's singles career.

There is no way for the PHSU to give him additional financial support since what is has is only half of the reimbursement expenses in competition unless they will stop supporting other young skaters back in the Philippines, cram them up together into a synchro team for in order to support him.

Although there is second chance for him to go back to Ice (solo dance to be specific)

I am not sure Edrian would do this. He was an ice dancer and left it. I think he wanted to fly ! He started out well but 3axel did him in... His 3lz-3t is gorgeous and as a junior he was promising.. Doesn't help that he was locked down like many Quebec skaters for so long during the pandemic.

It's a pity for him anyway, I noticed one of the crucial mistakes that Edrian or his family has made is similar what most Canadian skaters have made in the recent years as it made me wonder what prevent him from changing coaches to better himself yet he change coaches way too late.

I don't know if he ever going to survive quad training at his current age as the PHSU don't have much resources to give (I did some research about the previous presidents in the past yet most of them don't have experience as skaters but they came from different sports associations in the Philippines due to corruption which I am not amused with it)

money could be a factor.
Patrick himself said he made a few mistakes with his coaching choices...

But let me clarify something : Edrian had good coaching prior to Yvan.
I think was set him back are two things : he is quite tall. He started as an ice dancer. If he had learned his jumps younger, before growth, it may have been better. When I first met him, he had won Autumn Classic as a Junior... he was already the same height as he is now. Same content in jump I believe...

I cannot say anything about the Philippines fed... first, I don't know about it... second, well it's the Canadian thread :) Of course, Edrian is Canadian and many Canadian fans still support him, so I think it's okay we discuss his skating here once in a while (I brought it up yesterday!) but in the end, the Philippines problems related to his skating can be discussed better in the appropriate thread.

Don't retire yet @4everchan. I like reading your posts. I am sorry about Conrad as well. Now, if only Bruce Waddell would turn to Solo Dance (after Emmy's fantastic performances I am getting a taste for that).....
and @NanaPat don't be angry :)

i won't retire from loving skating :) I have been through a long life of retirements and always managed to find new skaters to love.
This is the first time though that I am really empty hearted when it comes to Canadian men.

I guess I still really like Edward Vasii. May he come back from injury strong and keep me focused.

In the meantime, I still have my "international" interest.. Won't name them cause I don't want them to retire just yet.

I think I am more upset because both Joseph and Conrad retired in the middle of the cycle .

I am totally fine and accepting of skaters who retire when an Olympic cycle is over.

Too late way too late, if he insist sticking to singles at where the opportunity of solo dance is right at his nose at least part time which he has the skill as an Ice Dancer.

If he's a girl, he's most likely surpassed Ms. Frank by a lot with the tech content that he has. I don't believe that the money is the main reason as he got too comfortable with his earlier coaches.

well.. i don' t know if as fans, we can really make such assessments. Having a good relationship with your coaching team is a great asset. Without these coaches, Edrian wouldn't have been able to achieve what he has achieved... Fine, it may not be enough for some, but it's still impressive. I wish him the best.

I have a new son. Edward Nicholas Vasii.
Let's see how that goes, considering he's been injured all season.

Well too bad, that's the end of the line for him.

In any case, Edrian had Daniel Béland as a coach when he started out. Daniel is a junior world champion himself and coached at St-Laurent Skating Club which would be close to a "home club" for Celestino. Nicholas Young, his next coach, also from Montreal, had a decent JGP career and even won Nebelhorn as a senior ! One of these Canadian skaters to win international competitions and never medal at nationals. I cannot blame Edrian for having coaches near his home. Yvan teaches out of Rosemère, which is not far but still two bridges away as it is on the North Shore. It's not next door and requires driving there, which kids cannot do. I am not willing to judge his coaching situation as a child when it also depended on his family resources.

Moving on.

Good for Conrad. It sounds like he was at a point where he could make the decision to move on and not have it decided for him. I'm sad to see him retire, but if this is what's best for him, that's good. His new job sounds like a great opportunity for him and a good start to a new career.

Announcing through LinkedIn has got to be a first though...
