2024-25 Canadian Figure Skating

I'm guessing the details be out by the end of the week since they do their press releases a week before a competition  It won't be 48 hours before like USFS.

Speaking of NextGen, I did notice a new requirement for this year on the JGP Selection document:
All NextGen Team members wishing to be selected to a Jr. Grand Prix must take part in the NextGen Competition and Camp, plus one additional competition prior to competing at a Jr. Grand Prix. Exceptions will only be made due to an injury which has been reviewed by the Skate Canada medical team.
(under Process For Selection)

Previously in the 2023 Selection document:
Stage 2 - Following the monitoring sessions in late June and early July, some additional skaters will be named to a Jr. Grand Prix in early July. These skaters will be required to compete in at the NextGen Competition/Camp in late July to ensure that the progress during the summer months is on track to achieving an optimal performance at a Jr Grand Prix. Such skaters may be asked to compete at an additional competition during the summer.
(under Stages For Selection)

No longer may be asked, but now must compete at an additional competition. So with the new conditional byes to Challenge for JGP/Junior International assignments plus this change is starting to give a picture of how Skate Canada is getting the skaters to compete more domestically.

I like this rule. More often than not, our top athletes skip domestic events or only skate the SP. I’m glad they have to skate a minimum of two events prior to JGP. This forces them to be more prepared.

Skate Ontario July competition starts today. Doesn't look like there will be livestream which normally on Daily Motion in the past.

Maddie backloaded her Loop instead of 2A.
But, Backloaded her loop into a popped double loop, unfortunately. It is becoming normal for her to mess up on one of her jumping elements. I hope she stops that. Backloading triple jumps makes the most sense though. I approve of the jumping layout.

She also went for 2A first and then went for her combo. So, she changed her jumping elements around

i like the start with the 2a. It probably can set her in better into the program. It's a smart layout. I approve. No more pops though ! :)

nice one. Though Peter looks good in anything, this is already going to be nominated for 2025 what the fabric awards...

Nadiia carried the theme into her make-up too!

Robert Brodie interview with Hetty Shi. She talks about her move to Rafael Arutyunyun in it.

Due to her age, Shi will remain a junior internationally for one more season (she turns 16 later this month), meaning she will make another appearance on the Junior Grand Prix circuit later this year (because of her move to California, Shi didn’t have her programs monitored by a Skate Canada official until this week, so she expects to be assigned to an event later in the Series, which begins in August and runs through early October).

Nadiia's eye makeup detail deserves some extra GOE:

The costumes are truly hideous. But then, I've always thought that you have to work really hard to make animal print not look cheap (and they didn't succeed).

Overall this was early season rough. She especially looks like she needs more time to get used to the movement vocabulary of this one.

Sigh. I wish we could have a paso that looks like a paso. But I guess that's not what the powers that be think will entertain the kids these days.

Lovely interview!!
Shi seems like an ambitious person, based on this interview. She thinks outside the box and is willing to reallocate to improve. She mentioned she has a solid 3Lo 3T. Her 3F 3T is iffy and she wants to learn the 3Lz 3T. I hope to see the 3Lo 3T at Next Gen. I hope she does well at Next Gen.

Interesting to see Uliana Shiryaeva not on either Skate Canada's national team or entered in the NextGen competition, based on her results at senior nationals last year. Her international PB isn't the highest yet, but she has only competed once internationally and has the technical arsenal to get much higher scores. I just assumed finishing right off the national podium and Hetty (bronze medalist) not yet being senior eligible would automatically get her somewhere. I didn't expect to see her competing at major intls as a senior yet, even though she is eligible, but I am surprised she isn't still being considered for a JGP.
