The 53rd Volvo Open Cup is set to take place Oct 31 - Nov 3, 2024, in Riga, Latvia, at the Volvo Sports Center. The event will feature the Singles (Women and Men) in the Junior and Senior categories.

It will be conducted in accordance with the ISU Constitution and General Regulations, the ISU Special Regulations & Technical Rules for Single & Pair Skating and relevant ISU Communications.

As I was hoping, my kid Olivia BAZLOVA (CYP) is entered in the younger Advanced Novice competition.

But I got a big shock. Tommaso BARISON has switched to representing Cyprus! Because he was still representing Italy as recently as March, he is currently under embargo and is competing as a guest skater in a Senior Men's competition of his own.

Viktorija LANGE is also competing in a Junior Ladies competition of her own. But, I'm not sure why, because she does not appear to have had a country change. As far as I can find, she has always represented Latvia.

The first day of the 53rd edition of the Volvo Open Cup is Short Programme Thursday. (Nah, doesn't have the right ring to it, does it?) And we begin with a Junior double-bill. 23 girls; followed by 12 boys.

I hope this isn't a sign of things to come. The first skater of the event, Emmi AHLSTEDT (FIN), has withdrawn. 😞

But, the second skater, Julia GRABOWSKI (DEU), is here! :biggrin:

Apart from the fall early on, that was a nice skate from Julia GRABOWSKI (DEU).

But, I do have to question the dress. It is one of those dresses that blends into the ice. And on those occasions when the camera was not zoomed in far enough, all you could see was her head and limbs.

And Elina GOIDINA (EST) on after her had a similar problem with her costume.

Elina's programme was very appropriate, given that today is Hallowe'en. She looked like a partially un-wrapped mummy!

The music was very spooky for the first third. But then it turned into that tune with the weird opera-like vocals. The music itself is good, but the vocals are 🙉

Typical teenager! Straight onto her mobile phone after she sat down! :rolleye:

Iida KARHUNEN (FIN) had no problems with blending into the ice. She was wearing a black dress! ;) :biggrin:

Really enjoyed that programme to "Le Jazz Hot".

She does, but it's close. 1.57 points ahead.

Don't think I've seen Megija FOGELMANE (LAT) before. But I absolutely loved that programme!!!

Like Iida before her, Magija was wearing a black dress. But she was seeing red.

See what I did there? She was skating to a Everybody Loves An Outlaw medley, consisting of "I See Red" and "Give Em Hell".

And it was great!!! :rock: :rock: :rock:

We need more programmes like that!!!

Going by the Warm-Up, it looks like we are not going to get much colour in this group either. I see two girls wearing white; two girls wearing black; and one girl wearing grey.

Correction, one of the girls is wearing a wishy-washy pale blue dress with a white team jacket over it; and another girl is wearing a royal blue dress with a black team jacket over it.

And the girl in grey was actually wearing a green dress under a grey jacket. And that is the skater coming on now, Ksenija HEIMANE (LAT).

When I saw that dress, I would never have thought we would be getting a "Godfather" programme!

Ksenija HEIMANE (LAT) was skating to "Speak Softly, Love". Not the original by Andy Williams, but a female cover by Danish singer Simone Egeriis.

Sorry Simone, but you murdered that song!

The skating was better than the music.

Milana SINIAVSKYTE (LTU) in a lovely white dress that you can't see most of the time.

She is skating to Alexandra Burke's cover of "Hallelujah". Which is my favourite female version of the song.

It's a big song for such a tiny girl. But she skated it very well.

She goes into 3rd position.

Natasa JERMOLICKA (LAT) is the one in the wishy-washy pale blue dress.

Now that was an unexpected change in music. From a violin solo to Middle Eastern music.

OK, this music is jumping all over the place. By the end, we were on a different planet! :drama:

Sorry Natasa, but that was a mess of music. You deserve better.

And now we have the royal blue dress, curtesy of Jelizaveta RUDNEVA (EST).

And a beautiful dress it is too! It has a white and darker blue pattern of sparklies on the front. To me, it looks like a galaxy.

And the music was beautiful too.

She made a few mistakes. But, on the whole, I liked it.

You know what I always say about loving watching Estonian events, because of the youngsters having lots of their team-mates joining them for the results, and practically climbing over each other. Well, I think this is the version you get when they grow up. Jelizaveta has 3 people sitting with her.

She goes into 8th position. And she is disappointed.

Agne IVANOVAITE (LTU) is wearing all black. A gorgeous black dress where the bust and arms are covered in the material tights are made of. For that matter, so are her legs, because she is wearing black tights. It all goes well with her black hair.

The skating was really good.

There is a bloke sitting on one side of her, and Senior Ladies skater Taisiia SPESIVTSEVA (UKR) sitting on the other side. Agne and Taisiia are chatting and laughing away with each other.

She goes into 6th position.

Ah, I thought there was only 5 in this group. We have another girl in a black dress. Well, most of it is black. The back of it is white.

Erm, has Anastasiia BEZUHLA (POL) managed to put her dress on back-to-front? Because if the white was at the front, it would look like she was wearing a maid's outfit.

To confuse us even more, she is doing a Charlie Chaplin programme.

She goes into 7th position.

Time for a resurfacing.
