Stars on Ice 2009

Now I did get a letter in the mail yesterday stating that SOI will not be returning to Newark, NJ's Prudential Center. However the show will still come to NJ's Izod Center in East Rutherford, NJ (the Meadowlands Complex) on Saturday, March 28, 2009 @ 3 PM.

Crap - now I have a dilemma. I work for Phillips-Van Heusen, which owns Izod. Thus, the company has access to event tickets, which they raffle off IF they aren't given to our customers or, IF the event is lacking in ticket sales, we get a discount. However, if there's a raffle, it's usually 10 days before the event [and, of course no guarantee to win, but I'd get all my co-worker/friends to enter for, as well]. The earliest discounts are announced are 2 months before.

So, the quandary is whether I should buy tickets during pre-sale or take a chance on the company having tickets or discounts available.

BTW, if anyone's interested in attending Disney On Ice at the Meadowlands durint THanksgiving weekend, let me know. I can send you the discount code - i'ts about 1/3 to 1/2 price off the ticket price depending on the ticket cost.

RD, would the Washington, DC show be a possibililty for you? Can you connect easily to the Metro from where you live?

Too far.

Assuming I have enough $$ at the time, AND feel like going, it would depend on if there is a train returning in time after the show. I checked for another event and had to forget about the DC show because the latest Amtrak left too early.

Is there any buzz about Buttle joining the tour? He is represented by IMG. It would only make sense to add him to the tour roster. I'm sure he'll do CSOI, but I have been waiting to hear an announcement that he's joining the tour in some capacity. He has said that he's not going back to school right away.

Thanks for the info. I see that they are coming to Boston on April 5th.
I don't recall SOI coming to Boston in the past usually they have a show in Worcester, MA. I know they have canceled shows before so I am hesitant
to order my tickets so far in advance. What do you think?

IMO, the problem with low attendance at SOI and other skating shows has more to do with the general economy rather than the skaters involved.

Jeff Buttle would make a difference in deciding whether or not to go. The tour has gone way downhill ever since Scott Hamilton took over and got rid of Bezic and Seibert as choreographers and directors.

Well, Sandy quit, according to the interviews and articles that came out after the news. Quite frankly after the whole "Gold" themed show, SOI hasn't been all that much to watch for me... but I only get to see it on TV.

Well, I'm thrilled to hear that Jeff will be at the Lake Placid show, and I'm still hoping that he gets to do other dates on the US tour.

Well, I don´t agree totally. Just thinking of Kristi´s Disson show where the arena seemed to be rather full with pre-teens, etc. The musical stars (and of course Kristi herself) were the big draws, I´d assume.

WOW, that is great news that Buttle will be as a guest star in Lake Placid show!!! I just hope that he will appear in more shows on US SOI tour, because his skating and his programmes are really wonderful...

Shizuka did a few guest appearances in the Canadian SOI tour back in 2004 when she won Worlds (I saw her in Kitchener and Hamilton that year) but I don't think any of the 2006 champions were ever with SOI in the first place. T&M and N&K both stayed in Russia, Shizuka stayed in Japan, and I believe Plushenko stayed in Russia as well. I have no idea if SOI ever approached them about touring either but they may have and were turned down.

I'm glad Cincy is still on the schedule and maybe they'll actually bring back the two hour show on NBC that they used to show in the past. That would be good for all the fans who can't get to a show this year.

According to Heather's TV Skating schedule and the one over on icenetwork, SOI will air a 2 hour special on Jan 4th 4-6pm on NBC!!!

I wonder if the reason they have the guest stars instead of signing skaters like Jeff to a full tour comes down to $$ - SOI/IMG doesn't have enough to pay for them to be a full tour member, but enough to bring them in for a certain number of shows?

I think alot of it has to do with the fact that some skaters don't want to make the committment of doing the whole tour. Also, many skaters have other things that they need to attend to...like coaching, their families etc.

I'm not talking about the skaters like Kurt... I'm talking of the newer skaters who have left competition but still aren't being picked up to tour fully. it's not like they're running at the same number of tours as they did in the height of pro skating in the 90s.

All those ice shows that were plentiful before you were born had a season. Skaters signed under contract to complete the season including rehearsals. I think they had a 2 month vacation but it was not paid. They made good salaries (the chore) for that era.

One stipulation, I was told, no one could be blonder than Sonia in her show.

SOI also tries to have a balance of the number of ladies, pairs, dance and men in their tour. This year, with Zimmerman, Weiss and Eldredge...they have a solid number of men. With guest spots by Buttle and Browning, they are overflowing with men. Buttle and Browning's quota is also likely to be more expensive than the others'.

I surehope I get to see Ilia again. My friends Marissa and Alex and I are throwin the idea out that we will go to eitherthe show where they live in NY, or if they will come here and we can go to the show in Pittsburgh. Either way, we're all hoping to see our Iliushka!!!!!!
