2024-25 Canadian Figure Skating

Asher announced on That Figure Skating Show that Deanna has her citizenship!!:laugh3::laugh3::jumping::party2::clap::points::bow:

He may mean that she passed the test, and hasn't been sworn in yet. I'll edit in the time-stamped link after I go back and find it.

ADDED: It was Brenda, not Asher who made The big announcement
I keep saying these posts appearing and disappearing.. not sure why ;)
but honestly, it was hard to focus on Brenda during that clip... :)

Because of the swim meet practice going on in the background? She's reporting on some big swim meet in Europe (with lots of Canadian swimmers) for the CBC.

Incidentally, when they talked about Summer McIntosh, they also mentioned Brooke in passing. They mentioned that she had a new partner, but NOT that the new partner is not Canadian and Brooke will (likely) not be competing for Canada.

Once you're waiting to be sworn in as a citizen, there are no more obstacles. Except for all the ceremonies being cancelled due to a global pandemic. Apparently people had to wait a LONG time for a ceremony during COVID. But hopefully that won't happen again in my lifetime.

there is nothing like a red speedo

Brooke is already representing Spain... She's competing 2-3 times already without much success.

I'd say, let's wait until Deanna herself posts something. If anyone gets to announce that she's finally a Canadian citizen, it should be her. Everything else is not fair.

It doesn't work like this though. Do you think Deanna will announce it ? Perhaps she will... perhaps she will not. :)

The body language was not very good after skating Maybe I am being negative but I can’t see this working out (partnership)
It must be frustrating as she did have a good partnership with Benjamin, at least on the ice... No idea why they split... and I don't want to go there.

But I remember other new teams having similar issues and taking up to 1.5 years to figure things out. They need to be patient.

I think she knows there are a lot of people who have wanted this for her for a while now, so she might want to do this herself.

Perhaps…..I was a bit curious what they would look like. She started out better with Ben and then fell off.

Was she injured when she was still with Ben -- possibly a concussion?
She had a lingering foot injury, that was the reason given for the withdrawal from Nationals last season (from Robert Brodie):

The seniors pairs field in Calgary will be without one of its top medal contenders. Brooke McIntosh and Benjamin Mimar, who took the silver a year ago in Oshawa, were forced to withdraw due to a lingering foot injury that has kept McIntosh off the ice for the past weeks. McIntosh and Mimar were sixth at Skate Canada and seventh in Finland in their two Grand Prix assignments in the fall.

Thank you! I'm glad to know it wasn't a concussion. Sorry I was confusing that with someone else. I keep rooting for her whenever I see her and her partner listed in competitions. I thought she and Ben showed a lot of promise, and I enjoyed their skating. I hope that things improve in her new partnership.

Cats out of the bag but maybe she wants to say something after the actual ceremony which is more official….
Or after she gets her Canadian passport. I've seen social media posts of skaters proudly holding up their first passport for a newly-aquired citizenship. I think the passport is her key to competing at the Olympics.

Well with the Canada Post strike, passports are delayed... So it may take a while

I really liked Brooke and Ben and thought they were going places. But Brooke just did not have the same presence on the ice that Fiona does. Brooke seemed to be more about getting the job done while Fiona seems to be out there to get the job done but to have a good time at the same time.

When you apply for a passport, you can arrange to pick it up instead of having it mailed (currently for a fee of $20). The pickup has to be done at a passport office (or maybe some select Service Canada locations???), which are in major cities (and some not so major, like Kelowna).

I used to work within walking distance of a passport office. In those days there was no extra fee for picking up your passport, and I never had mine mailed. Heck, I once picked up a co-workers passport when she was very frazzled and in a time crunch! She gave me the receipt and a note authorizing me to pick it up for her. We weren't sure it was going to work, but thought it was worth a try, and it did!

The people who are having passport issues are those who live far from the nearest passport office and those whose passports were slated for mailing, but didn't arrive before the strike. I believe the passport offices are holding a bunch of them, and will try to find yours if it is in limbo and is needed urgently (for a fee, of course!).

If the passport was actually mailed but didn't arrive, the picture is much grimmer.

And I've read that a large batch of passports were mailed to the Service Canada office here in Richmond the day before the strike began, to be picked up, and are now sitting who-knows-where between Ottawa and here. Some were renewed ones for people who needed them to travel at Christmas, like my cross-hall neighbour who was going to visit his son and family in Japan for the holidays. He hasn't travelled since before his wife got sick and they stopped going on cruises. She died last summer and he decided to renew his passport and start travelling again. There are a lot of stories like his going around. Do they ever issue replacements of lost ones, if it were someone's new first one? If an Olympic athlete like Deanna had hers lost in a mail backlog, would they print up a new one for her? (I haven't had a passport myself for years, so I'm pretty hazy on the procedures.)

@NanaPat

I was like @Diana Delafield mentioned referring to some news I read that many passports were indeed stuck... Doesn't mean that Deanna's is... All depends indeed on timing of the strike... a parcel was mailed to me 2 days before the strike... and well.. it obviously is nowhere near me...
and of course, if she had opted to pick it up or get it mailed ;)

In any case, she doesn't need it until next year... unless indeed, she wanted to pose with it ;)
