It's a pity it takes place so close to Canadians and US championships. I hope there still will be respresentatives from those countries. The more the merrier.

It´s close to Euros as well. It´s the weekend before and I´m guessing early skaters will already arrive in Tallinn that weekend, as the early practices probably starts on Monday.

So most likely it won´t be skaters there that is at Euros as well, but it´s easier to send other skaters from the European countries than from Canada and US with Nats and time difference.

It´s also a requirement that you have to be a university student, so there is a limited numbers of skaters that actually can go.

It´s probably also difficulties to go with your regular coach. Linnea is going with a coach that isn´t her main coach, her main coach isn´t even going with Mia to Euros, Mia is going with her other coach. So i´m guessing the main coach has to stay at the local rink. I remember when Camilla Gjersem went to this competition she had her twin sister Anne Line step in as her coach for the games.

Yes, I realised it's close to Euro's as well, but somehow there is always a good representation from European countries. I think Matteo Rizzo won the men's event once. Japan is also always well represented. I think Mai Mihara did a good job there some years ago as well.

Even The Netherlands sent a guy once (not that he ended in the top 10, but still). My fondest memory is of a Brazilian guy who only jumped singles (so he hardly got any points, because those don't count at all in an SP), but he was so enthusiastic it spilled over to everyone watching him. Just about being there.

Pair or Ice Dance, I assume so. It are university games after all. I don't think there will be pairs though. The last time there were pairs, was years ago and only 4 couples.

I read the rules. In Id one pair must have citizenship. Nothing was told about pairs.

Finland's rules are quite similar as for Euros, expect the other score can be any international. For Euros it had to be CS or GP. They are quite plenty skaters on the list. Some of them are really not university students, but they can "cheat" as we have open university system and high school students can study both at upper high school and it an open university at the same time. Makar Suntsev is full time university student and most likely will be selected, in women I know Selma Välitalo is full time university student, Janna and Olivia are upper high school students. Nella just did her matriculation exams and I think I read she had planned to pause studies for a while. About Linnea Ceder I have no idea what she studies but for sure not at high school any more. About the rest of the skaters, I don't know the situation if are they still at high school or at university. No candidates for dance. IMO they should send full time students as there are some. In men it is clear Makar will get the spot and he studies at university, but in women it is open. But we will see it soon. This list has all age eligible skaters anyway who have reached the demands, as some can also begin studies at the beginning of next year.

So, you can 'cheat' if you are too young and follow an Open University course, but you can age out. Strange in a way. I used to know plenty of students - full-time mind - older than 30. And I used to study part-time myself when I was already working, and not at the open university but at a traditional one. Not that I ever could have participated in these Games, but it is a little odd.

I graduated my engineering studies from university of applied science at the age of 45. It was not ny first degree but I went there because my previous profession was hard to find full time job. I have also studied at open university. I just signed in, paid and made some courses. I think the purpose of the age limit is just that athletes would be full time students. But it was not thought that high school students can sign in open courses.

It is common students work at the same time. But imo they should really study, not just sign in.

Finland has now made selections, Janna Jyrkinen and Makar Suntsev.

I am not sure if it right towards "real" university students to send high school students, but I read Finland's Olympic Committee has also some demands "athlete must be realistic to place at least 16th or higher". In Finland normally lowest age to start studies is 18-19. I think the highest age limit is also quite low. Some studies may last here 5-7 years while 7 is maximum here people can stay at university, 5 is maximum at university of applied sciences, if it takes longer there must be a good reason, like serious illness.

When is the figure skating events taking place? I´m surprised to see more skaters doing this before Euros - maybe it´s not as close as I thought?

I have the impression that Gutmann is going to Nordics Open as well, that is the weekend after Euros. Seems like a lot of competitions in a few weeks times. Maybe she will skip it now after getting spot at WUG as well.

Skating is 16-17-18 January.
Official practices for Euros start on 28th January.
For Italians, doubling should be more comfortable since travel issues for the Winter University Games are limited. Grassl's coaching base now is Torino and so doesn’t even have to travel to attend this event.

Thanks. I guess the title of this thread confused me, it says between 21th and 23rd of January. 10 days between in competition and first practices is plenty of time for rest even for those who have a longer travel way. There is time to go home. It really depends also if the skaters will go home after the skating part or still be there longer, if i´m not mistaken there is both an opening and closing ceremony?

Yes, Italians will have a shorter travel way, so it would not impact them much.

Seems like it was lucky that Euros got relocated with a later date so that it´s possible to do both. We might see a more stacked field than I thought, it makes sense also given it´s kinda a test event for OG.
