Boot/Blade Recommendations Returning Beginner

Hi all,

I skated as a kid regularly on an outdoor rink on atrocious skates. Took private lessons for about 6 months as a teen. Had the basics and waltz jump. Just returned via LTS as an adult. My plans are to find a coach, progress past my childhood abilities (at most single jumps, may even head toward dance) I have an appointment next week with Greg at Polar Skate in NJ. Looking for brand recommendations. I know Greg will take care of this but out of anticipation just wondering which direction things will go.

Stats:
5’3”
150# (halfway through a 50# weight loss)
Foot - Regular width in street shoes (somewhere between Roman and Irregular Foot Type) high arches

Thanks so much for your help.

Hi and welcome. Risport would be best for your foot type. With your weight RF3 Pro. Combine them with a good traditional standard intermediate blade : MK Pro or John Wilson Coronation Ace. If you are seriously considering to head towards dance you could try a different blade, the MK Dynasty: It's a hybrid blade that's good for starting dance, as well as working for synchro and freestyle. Just be aware the toepick is going to be larger than you are probably used to at first but you'll get used to it in no time.

good luck!

Thanks you so much for your reply. I’ve only known of Gokden Skate for a few days and have already deduced you’re the resident expert! I thought I might hear Risport based on my research. Honestly, I don’t know what direction I want to go in for sure but at 58, I don’t see big jumps in my future. I think I’ll go with MK Pro or CA. I had a CA blade on my ill fitting Riedell’s (I think they were the only brand the rink shop had and they were way too narrow). If I head in the direction of dance I’ll look into changing to a dance blade and possibly even a boot. It is way too early to know right now. Doing LTS in the rental bricks at the moment. Praying it doesn’t take too long to get my skates once fitted. Thanks again for your help!

Hi and thanks for your compliment! I would suggest that even if you do change to dance that you are okay in a boot like I suggested.

Good luck! :)

@Ic3Rabbit when you know you know. Fitter tried me in Graf, too much room in the heel. Jackson, not enough volume through the arch and too much volume in the heel. Risport RF3, like Cinderella’s slipper. Thanks agin for taking the time!

You are very welcome! Thank you for coming back to let us know how it went! I am glad you are happy with your new skates.

To add, went with the tried and true Coronation Ace blade. Gonna skate on Thursday. I’ll report back how it goes. Will have to go back to have permanent screws once I’m sure the blades are installed correctly for me. Thanks again!

Skated in the RF3’s. They felt great. What a difference (obvious I know) from the rental bricks. No pressure points. Will take some time but other than having to retighten them twice as they warmed up it was amazing. Looking forward to progressing in these. Thanks again @Ic3Rabbit
