Some overlap with the entry list for Sofia Trophy, so either a tight turn-around for some skaters or we can expect a few of them to drop out.

You never know. Some skaters might be planning to do back-to-back competitions.

But, if it is the case that they are only doing one, I would almost guarantee you that Varvara Abramkina (CYP) and Leilah Patten (GBR) will drop out of the Volvo Open Cup. They both belong to the Denkova-Staviski club, the hosts of the Sofia Trophy. And they may think that they are likely to do better in familiar surroundings. (Plus, it's a lot less hassle to just stay at home than to travel to Latvia!)

Mind you, it would be nice if Varvara in particular did do both, as I would love to see the two Moscow girls that are representing Cyprus going head-to-head. (Vasilisa Bogomolova is also entered here). The only time it has happened so far is at the Denis Ten Memorial, which Vasilisa won with Varvara in 5th.

Some might drop out, some might do both of it´s not an actual overlap.

Looking at both entries in senior women, it would be wiser strategically to go for this one if they are going to drop one of them - less entries and also I would say a little bit less competitive field - bigger changes to collect ranking point, IF there isn´t a huge dropout so there isn´t enough entries for that.
I can never remember how many entries from different nations there has to be for ranking points. Is it 4 different ISU members and how many in total? Even with some dropout now, it still looks like it will be valid. One competition that didn´t give ranking points this season was Northern Lights Trophy in Iceland after some WD, there were only 3 ISU members competing at last, Norway, Finland and Poland in the senior women event, and 5 in total (Norway had the most entries with 3 ladies). But the competitions did give valid points for minimums though.

I would bet that Brezinova will do both, considering her crazy amount of competitions this fall. She did 10 competitions already. I think she is doing so many to try get her Worlds mins back. She did some very close competitions this fall - Tayside Trophy (Oct. 12) and Diamond Spin (Oct. 15) and Tirnavia (Nov. 1) and Denkova Staviski Cup (Nov. 5). I hope she doesn´t burn herself out on this task.

That's why I said it might be a tight turn-around for some of these skaters. The Sofia Trophy finishes on the 11th, with the Volvo Open Cup starting on the 16th, which is doable but not necessarily easy.

Leilah will probably be doing both unless she manages to get the Jr Worlds minimums at the Sofia Trophy already, as she did win British Nationals and the entry deadline for Jr Worlds is coming up (28.01.2025). I wouldn't even be surprised if she was also on the preliminary entry list for the Bavarian Open, just in case.

Senior women entries:

Victoria Alcantara AUS (listed at Sophia Trophy, might WD)
Eliska Brezinova CZE (listed at Sophia Trophy, but seems to be doing all competitions possible)
Olivia Lisko FIN
Minja Peltonen FIN
Selma Valitalo FIN
Tara Prasad IND (listed at Sophia Trophy, might WD)
Emilija Ozola LAT
Lueta Silina LAT
Meda Variakojyte LTU
Katherine Ong Pui Kuan MAS (listed at Sophy Trophy, might WD)
Mia Risa Gomez NOR
Oda Havgar NOR
Cathryn Limketkai PHI

Even if all those listed at Sophia Trophy drop out, there is still 5 different ISU members competing, which I think is still enough for ranking points. Most likely 6 because I would count on Brezinova doing both. Latvia, Norway and Finland with multiple entries would most likely still have an entry if someone WD. So if i´m not wrong I think there just need to be one other member to be valid for ranking points.

Risa Gomez is the only one at this competition who is going to Euros, this would really be good chance for her to climb a warm up group at Euros if she can place top 5.

Olivia is hunting for scores and minimums for WC, so I am quite sure at least she will be there and other competitions where she can go and is selected by local fed. At the second part of the season GP/CS scores can be replaced by other 2nd part's international ISU competition scores at the two best scores list and that is the reason there are so many Finns in so many competitions. I think all of them are dreaming about WC spot. It might well happen that in singles the spot goes to somebody else than skaters who take part in EC.

She should go, she has a really good chance of podium in this competition. She could very well win. So could probably all the Finnish ladies. I would also put Meda in the medal mix, perhaps Eliska if she shows up and Mia if she can produce something similar like Nationals.

Edit: The haunt for minimums could perhaps lead to mistakes. It´s always very stressful when there are fewer and fewer competitions to achieve them.

Regarding valid as ranking points: The number of entries has to be 8 from 4 different ISU members (just checked rules for 2023 and i´m guessing it´s stil the same). There are still 13 listed, so there is still a good chance for it to be valid, but there is not room for many other WD if the 4 ladies who are going to Sofia Trophy WD, that would leave the competition with 9 entries (still strongly believing Brezinova would do both competitions).

Potentially I think numbers of entries under 8 is a bigger danger then that it would end up with only 3 different ISU members.

Cathryn Limketkai PHI is doing both Junior and Seniors in search of CTES mins for Junior Worlds (needs just 3 points) and 4CC (needs 5.7 points). She is the PHI nationals silver medalist but champion Maxine Bautista cannot compete this year since she is transferring federations.

There seems to be a paid stream but very reasonable. It seems one day pass is 3 Euros!

https://solidsport.com/volvo-open-cup/watch/volvo-open-cup-51st-thursday-18-january

That SolidSport stream was for the 51st edition, which was a year ago in January 2024.

Don't worry, every January it takes me a few weeks (well, more like months!) to get used to it being a different year.

isn't there a free livestream for each day on youtube?

https://www.youtube.com/@iSPLive/streams

Yep, that's where the streams for the 54th edition are.

Well, that is really excellent news. I love to be wrong about this one
