2024-25 Canadian Figure Skating

Robert Brodie interviews Wesley Chiu:
“Everything is sort of still up in the air right now. I don’t want to make too many promises, but I guess we’ll see. Still taking it day by day, see how it feels in the next couple of days, in the next week, and we’ll go from there. But (there’s) a lot of uncertainty, that’s for sure.”

He also mentions this at the end:
One of the younger skaters we were looking forward to seeing make her senior debut in Laval — 2024 Canadian junior champion Lulu Lin, whom we profiled back in May — is another injury casualty this week. But according to Skate Canada, the 15-year-old from Oakville, Ontario, remains in the pool of skaters who will be considered for the team it will send to the World Junior Championships, set for Feb. 25-March 2 in Debrecen, Hungary.

That's not sounding good for Wesley. :( Roman would comfortably win if he put two clean programmes together, but he hasn't done that since the Olympic season. I'm starting to wonder if Aleksa Rakic could actually take it this year.

I'm still pondering my predictions - am stumped with both men's and ladies. Might end up being names out of a hat if I can't decide. :ROFLMAO:

i am so confused with predictions... both our singles national champions have struggled a lot... if dance and pairs seem a breeze, though we may get a couple surprises... the singles.. sigh.

I really am not a fan of Rakic... so if he is to win, it better be because he skated lights out and not because everyone else falters...

it reminds me of the Bausback situation a few years ago.

I think Stephen Gogolev's season is over. He isn't on the start orders for Nationals, and I don't see him being chosen for 4CC if he hasn't been able to compete since SCI.

Hopefully he'll be well enough next season to be able to compete at Nationals for both programs and be happy with the results ❤️
I am a new member. I just joined today. I agree with you. Steven Gogolev’s season is over. I hope all goes well with him next year, that he is healthy enough to do the Grand Prix Series and Canadian National Championship.

I've done my predictions, but I have no problem with not winning anything if some unexpected singles or teams skate lights out. It's different when that happens because there's a lot of faltering, falls and other mistakes. All the best to Wesley (though it does please me that nobody's forcing anything) and at least there will be quite a substantial audience as far as I know. That always helps!

Rakic is a very good skater, but I find it difficult to connect and be inspired by him. At the moment, his technical development is ahead of things like his performance skills - which is not unusual for someone transitioning from juniors. In some respects, he's kind of the opposite of Anthony Paradis. Paradis has the performance skills in abundance, but his technical development lags behind them. If you could combine the two, we would have an amazing skater!

i guess i just don't like Joanne's skaters.

Welcome to the board :)

I'm not sure if he'll be on the Grand Prix next season, it depends on how many spots they can get for the men. He's currently #50 in the SB standings, so he'll likely be depending on a host spot. He should get a Challenger if he's healthy enough to compete next season, doing well at an early one would help him rise on the alternates list.

I think Canada is going to be very dependent on host spots for the men next year. At the moment, none of them qualify based on SB or world ranking. Hopefully whoever goes to Worlds will finish top 24 and qualify for one spot that way (I think a top 12 finish and 2 spots is probably unrealistic unless someone suddenly finds form and consistency). The same could happen in ladies. At the moment, Maddie just scrapes into the top 24 SB once you remove the juniors who will be staying junior (which is fewer than the past two seasons because those caught immediately below the age change, e.g. Jia Shin, will finally be senior eligible).

Don't know if it's been mentioned, but the 2025 series of "Dancing On Ice" is starting tonight (in about 40 minutes from now), and there is a lot of skaters who are either from Canada or represented Canada taking part this year.

  • Andy Buchanan (with "Hollyoaks" actress Chelsee Healey)
  • Vanessa James (with "The Only Way Is Essex" personality Dan Edgar)
  • Molly Lanaghan (with "Coronation Street" actor Sam Aston)
  • Eric Radford (with "Eastenders" actress Charlie Brooks)

Molly and Eric are new for this series.

I have never watched the series, but thought I should let you know seeing as there are so many Canadian connections this year.

Aleksa Rakic and Uliana are similar - good technicians, but weaker performers. Joanne McLeod seems to produce skaters who are technically very consistent, within the limitations of their ability, but who lack artistry and performance skills.
I wouldn't say Joanne produced Uliana... Uliana already had learned her technical content... if anything Joanne didn't manage to help Uliana to improve beyond that... ok fine, Uliana is improving but not as much as I hoped for. Kara was a disaster when she skated with Joanne and she's already much much better now that she's moved. Aleksa has very little presence on the ice.. he is not that solid technically either. The one skater who sort of had a full package and came from MacLeod is Emmanuel Sandhu... unfortunately, he didn't have competition nerves.

This being said, considering Wesley's issues (not talking about his injuries) though the Murphys create better all-around skaters, they also lack competitive edge.

I miss Conrad more than ever (not like he did have competitive nerves himself but at least, I enjoyed watching him skate)

Yeah, they were dependent on the host spots for the men last season for the initial assignments. There's still time for Wesley/Aleksa/Roman to raise their SB at 4CC, Worlds and World Team Trophy (depending on who is assigned to the latter two.) I think Roman and Aleksa will get two of the spots since right now they have the highest SBs. Hopefully Wesley can raise his SB at 4CC.

Women, Maddie could place top 12 and earn two. Katherine could get a non-host spot, maybe Uliana. I am hoping that they maximize their spots by not having someone who could qualify for two spots in one of those host spots again.

with Gogo and Wesley out of Nationals... this will be one of the weakest field ever... at the same time, I prefer they w/d than skating injured... but yeah... let's just say that if Anthony and Edrian skate clean SPs, they could be in contention without quads and 3a.

injuries happen... that's life...but yeah... i hope that wesley will go to 4CC and that's why he is taking Nationals off...
