both Canadian men made it out of the Short program last year at worlds... and these two guys are still competing this year.
Of course, it can happen that someone pops a jump and doesn't get through but all these guys will offer a quad + 3 axel + 3-3 combo which is usually enough to qualify for the LP.
Once a FED has announced HOW they will select their skater, they better stick to it. At this point, in our close up vision, of course, ONLY Roman seems healthy enough and should represent Canada to Worlds. That doesn't mean it would be fair to suddenly CHANGE the criteria for selection and eliminate two guys who were not healthy and BASED their decision of not competing because they STILL had a chance to get selected.
So of course, the selection will be announced at 4CC. In the past, no matter how many points ahead were scored, the best skater got the nod. (For instance, Amélie Lacoste getting the nod over not 100% healthy Cynthia Phaneuf with an almost even score). In this case, who knows, they may consider different factors. I doubt Wesley or Aleksa would be sent ahead of Roman unless they showed that they are actually very ready to compete. Skate Canada is fully aware that this selection is crucial as they need to qualify their man for the Olympics so they are being cautious. Nothing wrong with that.
For women, Canada has had one frontrunner for a while. Maddie. Though she has had her share of inconsistency issues, they pretty much left it to her to show she would deserve that spot. She did brilliantly at Nationals, so it's fair game. If someone else had won the title, they may have and rightfully so, offered the spot to that woman exactly based on the fact that Maddie has had her share of opportunities.
I actually have zero problems with the selection rules, nor the selection itself this year. It's pretty straightforward and fair, and I like giving a hard time to feds about their often weird political choices... not in this case
