Are Evan and Johnny going in the wrong direction?

Can we please wait until the GPF before we label both of these guys as "past-their-prime has-beens"? They lost by a point to a young up-and-coming skater at one event. It was early in the season. They were both under pressure because of the retarded NBC rivalry. Both are trying something new this competition (quad and "new style"). How about we give them two months to adjust before we send out a verdict, huh?

You mean, if they make the GPF.

Evan probably will because all the top men assigned to Skate Canada were so afraid of competing against Evan, that they retired for good before the season even started... So the victory at SC will probably Evan's.

Johnny is up against Takahashi and Oda + Ponsero, Schultheiss, Reynolds and the no.4 strong Japanese Takahito Mura. That's going to be very tough. What is Daisuke's first competition? I can't wait to see his programs (I am already in love with the sp...).

 Oh, come on! You actually believe that Jeff Buttle and Stephane Lambiel retired from competitive figure skating because they feared competing against Evan Lysacek?!?!

That is the funniest thing I have ever heard!!!! :chorus:

It's called humour. Despite my nationality I am quite capable of it. Of course it's just a coincidence - but come on, at first everyone thought, oh Skate Canada, sounds like a good competition - and then, dang, Buttle retires. A month later Lambiel retires - and suddenly an Evan-win sounds very plausible.

But I am glad you had a good laugh.

After Kozuka morphed into a top guy over the summer, I would also like to see Chan having a great competition, he already won TEB last year. If Evan makes mistakes similar to the ones at SA - Chan has a good chance.

Awww, come on! If something extraordinary like a serious injury doesn't happen, they'll both be there. I'm not a betting person, but even I can vouch for that.

Joubert, Daisuke, Evan, possibly Kozuka (although he needs to prove this wasn't just a fluke at TEB), maybe Chan. Oda is not a factor because he only has one GP and so it's between Verner and Weir, and based on what we've seen from both this season, Weir is in by a landslide.;)

Also, please tell me you don't consider "Ponsero, Schultheiss, Reynolds and the no.4 strong Japanese Takahito Mura" as severe competition for Weir! Even if he has a bad outing, he's not going to get less than bronze at NHK.

It's a USFSA / NBC conspiracy ;)

No... :p

My guess is that Johnny will challenge more combos next season, but not this season. Or in US Nationals, he may do it.

It may be their long term plan. He has a minor injury to the bottom of his foot which keeps flaring up once in a while. Maybe they are protective of it to keep it from getting worse. Just my thoughts.

Well Sergei Voronov will be there...I'm curious if his lutz and flip are back. If they are , I think he's got a great shot at beating Evan. Seeing as Evan is saying he won't attempt the quad.

When did he say that? What happened to being strong and manly out there and risking everything?

Voronov's personal best for the short is under 70 points, Ponsero has the same problem. Voronov often gets closer to the podium with his consistent jumping in the long program (happened last year at Worlds and Europeans), but wobbly shorts and being lowballed on the PCS didn't allow him to really play with the big guys so far. So if Evan hits another 82 points short program as he did at SA, Voronov (and possibly Ponsero) can hit everything in the long, including Quads, and even have an entertaining program - but is still going to lose.

In the case of Joubert at 2008 worlds, it seems that he was not even aware that he was not maxing his combo opportunity. But Johnny seems like a more analytical thinker so that I would suppose that he purposefully chooses not to do with some legitimate reasons.

Could doing an additional combo like 3-2 be so demanding on his injured foot and/or stamina?

While Evan was interviewed by CBC, he stated that he probably won't be doing the quad anymore.

I think it may come from both his stamina & injury protection. His food life sounded like better than before according to his last interview, and he did 3/3 combo after the half way besides quad in FP at SA and this may be one of his plans. It looks step by step to do something new of more difficuly .
I thought his stamina has been his long time issue since this new judging system.

I wish I could give him an incredible energy drink called Yunker Fanti before FP every event. I tried it once and I could not believe the power of it. It’s like a lightning bolt or a cattle prod. I imagine Johnny may be unstoppable if he tries it. :rock:

He really needs more energy and stamina, I think.

Despite your nationality? What in the world does your nationality have to do with anything?!? I don't even know what country you are from, nor do I see how it would be relevant here. Are there countries where people don't tell jokes? You sound kind of paranoid......

Next time you make a joke, use an appropriate emoticon ( or :p or  would work)

I don't know if I am the only one feel tired of all the make up and the over the top costumes. I just love how simple Kozuka is. That's what I like, I can just focus on his skating instead of focusing on their costums. Kozuka reminds me of Scott Davis. Scott was a very simple skater with great spins and skating skills. He was my favorite in the early 90s.

Is it just me or anyone else think Johnny seems to have the same costume every year? I just hate it.

I don't think anyone has posted the answer yet - it's CoC, which IMHO he will win easily (unless Verner sorts himself out, and maybe even then).

But I spent most of his program looking at his stupid costume!!! Michelle Kwan never wore stupid things...doesn't Frank Carroll say something to him?

The costumes were not Lysacek´s choice, Tarasova selected them. Personally I think that he should get new costumes (something simple and elegant, what ever colour) as soon as possible, but I also believe that whatever he will wear, there still will be negative comments here, ROTFL.

On the other hand I also think that maybe it was not such a good idea of Lysacek to get a Tarasova choreography this season. It is though good that he does try new ideas. As Buttle is not competing any more, for next season I would very much recommend for Lysacek Wilson to get choreography, that would be just wonderful.

About doing a quad in the short programme, I think that maybe for those skaters who are not as consistent as e.g. Plushenko used to be, it is not an intelligent risk to take. Anyway, I think that for most skaters the coach may have a say or suggestion in that?
