2024-25 Canadian Figure Skating

What a great score for Ava and Yohnatan, particularly considering one less lift than in seniors. And congratulations to Martina and Charly on their road back to recovery.

I am not familiar with the Swiss team so looked them up - they finished 4th at the Warsaw Cup in seniors, just behind Fiona and Ben. It seems they might be looking to compete at Junior Worlds and look like they could be podium challengers. I am a bit surprised by Vouillamoz's birthday tho - April 24, 2004. This would make her 20 years of age as of July 1, 2024 and so a senior? Or did I miss a rule change for women in pairs? Sorry, too lazy to read a rule book today.

At the ISU Congress held in Las Vegas in June 2024, members of the ISU Council accepted a proposal to raise the junior age limit for females in pairs and ice dance to 21 and to raise the junior age limit for males in pairs to 23. A maximum age gap of seven years was instituted for junior pairs and ice dance teams.

My ice princess ⛸️ 👑 was interviewed recently in Calgary, right after winning Canadian Junior Nationals.

They mentioned she goes for 3A’s in practice and even landed some 👏

Also, they showed a clip of one of her successful 3A’s. It looked fully rotated to me. But, would get only a slightly positive GOE due to the landing. At Nationals, Kaetlyn mentioned all her 3A’s were q or <. I think she is now trying to master this jump and I think she is now fully rotating this jump. Only question is, how consistent is this jump for her?

I’m so happy to see how fierce this little Canadian warrior is. I heard from a little birdie, that once she is successful with the 3A, that they may try for the 4S next. But, health is a priority. So, they won’t really push for quads, as she needs to be healthy till 2034… 😔

The goal is to practice 3A. If she lands this jump with 3/4 of success in competitions, then, maybe he will give her permission to start training the 4S in a harness 😝. But, first she has to focus on just the 3A and they won’t add this to her jumping elements, until it is more consistent in practice. She is comparing herself only to what Koreans and Japanese are doing, at this moment and because only the 3A seems to be kept at Seniors, that is the priority. If they see an athlete like Mao Shimada or even Adeliya (1st Senior season) maintain a quad, like the 4T, for 4 or more seasons, then, she will try to learn a 4S more seriously.

being born in the worst possible time.... sucks for Lia.

that triple axel looked cool to me.

Lia's FS video on the CBC's YouTube page now has an impressive 79,000 views -- much higher than any of the others posted from the event.

Over 81K views now... so I guess if Lia won Juniors, she has to compete seniors domestically. Her August birthday will be a good thing, as she has a year to train the 3A in a city that is not exactly a huge mecca for skating before she is in the limelight of the JGP series. Seeing this phenom coming through the ranks, would have been a challenge for Kaiya to stay with Scott Davis knowing she was plateauing with him.

She no longer does (they changed the rules) but she should anyways

i think that's because @RatedPG and I have been watching it over and over and over :)
I honestly do watch her performance over and over 😜

Wow! @4everchan are you watching Lia. I only watched her free skate twice today 😝; I would love it if, it surpasses 100K views.

Yes. If I was in Kaiya’s position, I wouldn’t like not being the best skater at my skating camp. Kaiya’s spins have improved with Tracey and her 3Lo and 3S are higher. If they changed her layout, to leave out the triple triple in the free skate and just do a single 3T, she has the potential to be a 180+ international female skater for Canada. I think that is her peak though….

for now.. her peak for now

kaiya is extremely talented. with this new team, who knows what they will manage to do.. I reserve the right to wait until next year before making a decision about her... she's already spinning better. she's rotating a bit better... lots of things could change here.

Yes. I asked them what their plans are for next season. They told me Lia is practicing the 3A so she can rival Maddie at Nationals, for next season. So, I guess this means she will be competing in Seniors domestically.
It just feels weird for a 13 year old to be competing in the women’s category.

PS i am trying not to get attached too much to Lia.
I saw her compete live. Great competitor. Great mindset. But tiny little girl who has not yet grown. We all know what a growth spurt could mean. Hopefully, in her case, with her ultra tight rotation, it may not be too harmful.

I hope so. I really like Tracy and I hope and wish only good things for Kaiya.
Is Kaiya still going to be part of the National team for next year? She won’t get a GP event. But, I’m hoping she can remain in the national team and be sent to two challenger events. She will probably have to surpass 166 domestically, just like our other skaters, though.

Kaiya's status on the National Team is hazy right now since it's either top 3 at Senior Nationals or GP assignment. Sara-Maude and Katherine are automatically on the team, so any more members for the Senior Women will depend on if they can get non-host spots. Katherine has a chance with a 180+ SB, I'm hoping Sara-Maude can keep up her annual PB at 4CC tradition (🕯️). If they do have host spots that are open, they may go for Uliana or Fee Ann since they have higher SBs than Kaiya.

She may end up in the same category that Hensen/Lickers and Bashynska/Beaumont were in this season where they went to High Performance Camp and did get the two Challengers, but weren't on the National Team.

I’ve been a fan of Lia since 02/18/2022 when I saw her compete at a AB PreNovice event. She was dressed as a cat in pink, for her SP, and I saw so much sass and personality in her. She was only 9 years old. The thing that wowed me the most was how she pushed herself to try to land a 3F in practice. She “only” had a 3S and 2A back then. I just saw something fierce in her, plus, she loved to perform. Her growth and improvement for these past three seasons has been unbelievable to me. I never imagined she would win PreNovice, Novice and now Juniors.

Speaking of which, I’m looking forward to PreNovice and Novice Nationals coming up….
I have my favourites already, after watching all Sectionals already for these events, for the girls events.
Aleksa Volkova’s sister Camila is one of the faves. My favourite is Uxia Gonzalez, also from AB. She stood out to me, last season at PreNovice Nationals with a top 8 finish, and she is doing so well, at Novice events this season.

I would be surprised if they bumped her off the National Team just because she came 4th this year. Dupuis came 6th at last year's Nationals and wasn't she was named to the senior team? Back in 2023 when Dupuis came 4th at Nationals, they sent her over Kaiya to World Team Trophy. I suspect it was because Kaiya was still eligible to compete as a Junior.

It was because Sara-Maude was given a host spot at Skate Canada International, likely because she had an SB that was 0.15 points off of Kaiya's SB. A GP assignment got her on to the National Team. Kaiya isn't guaranteed a host spot for next season, it'll have to be seen how the assignments work out. It has to be top 3 at Nationals or GP assignment for National Team.

When it was World Team Trophy, I think Sara-Maude got the assignment since she had the highest placement at 4CC of the Canadian women and thus contributed the second set of points for the championship part of the qualification.

I looked for, and failed to find, how the countries are chosen for WTT.

From this, it looks like you know! Could you post a link or instructions on how to find this? 🥺
