2024-25 British and Irish figure skating

Just seen a facebook post from BIS. I have followed the eoctv link and have played the start of the opening ceremony without having to create an account or anything. Hopefully that means we will be able to watch there without paying lots:

It's a bit of a mixture of well-known names and whozat?

I don't know the solo skaters at all - I see from googling that Arabella's mum was British champion in her day.
Arabella was very promising at novice level, taking either the intermediate or advanced novice title one year. She never quite seemed to fulfill her potential as a junior, though, and seems to have stagnated the past couple of years. She relocated to Dundee with her mam last Summer, and I'd hoped that would kickstart her progress again but it doesn't seem to have done. She had a bit of time out last season after picking up a groin injury at the JGP. She isn't really ready for seniors yet, but I think that she might have aged out of juniors.

Edit: I am surprised that Arabella is being sent out, because she didn't manage to qualify for nationals this year and does not have any stable triples.

Ah well, I will have to cheer for Arabella then, my partner's from Dundee, and his dad goes to the rink a lot, though hockey is his main interest!

Maybe she's been looking better in practice recently.

I wonder if being Dundee-based is significant actually, maybe a chance for the Dundee coaches to scout the Oly rink a bit.

That's why I'm a bit disappointed with our entries. I thought it would be a good opportunity for skaters and coaches to gain a bit of familiarity with the Olympic venue. Obviously, it won't feel the same as it would during the Olympics, but it could still provide valuable experience. Of the GBR and IRL entries, the only ones with any real possibility of qualifying and being selected for the Olympics are Bekker and Hernandez (and I think it is 50/50 whether they will be able to make the FD at Worlds and qualify a second Olympic ID spot for us beyond the one Fear and Gibson are likely to secure).

For the past couple of seasons, my local skater Dillon JUDGE (IRL) has been training in Bergamo, where the Lombardia Trophy is held. And it is only 30 miles as the crow flies from Assago, where the Olympics will be held. (Milan occupies most of the area in between the two towns).

So that is probably why he is entered in the Olympic Test Event, even though he is unlikely to get to Worlds never mind the Olympics. It's handy.

Dillon is also doing another competition in Italy this week, the Merano Trophy. But it is further away in the South Tyrol.

Incidentally, the only other skaters from these islands going to the Merano Trophy are Corey CIRCELLI (ITA) in Senior Men and Sophia TKACHEVA (IRL) in Junior Ladies.

Corey also trains in Bergamo, but he is only down as Italy's alternate for the Olympic Test Event.

(Boys but I hate the format of the entry lists on the new ISU website. I wish they would go back to the old format. It was so much easier to use).

Maybe our top skaters would prefer not to have distractions from preparing for worlds? But I agree, even if our number ones weren't going for that reason, I might have expected that we send our second ranked in each discipline, who may be subs in case of injury.

I think that being the same weekend as 4CC really skews the entry list for 4CC countries. At least Europe doesn't have that complication.

It looks like maybe Montreal ice dancers decided not to play here. I guess the coaching staff might have their hands full with 4CC.

Oh, I don't know - there are loads of skaters that I'd love to see in the Men, Women and Ice Dance categories - pairs is a bit sparse, though.
I hadn't realised that it was on at the same time as 4CC. I was also disappointed that there weren't more entries - but it looks like they have perhaps deliberately limited each category to two warm up groups, and one entry per country except for Italy.

Calling all British Ice Dance girls!

Nadiia BASHYNSKA / Peter BEAUMONT (CAN) have split.

We cannot miss this opportunity to get Peter back.

Nadiia and Peter's last international programme was at the Warsaw Cup on 21st November 2024. So, if he does come back home, he should be able to compete from late November. Assuming that we have a similar calendar to this season, he could conceivably be able to compete for us at the final two Challengers. Or even the final Senior Grand Prix.

Off the top of my head, there are two high profile British Ice Dance girls available.

The first is Ashlie Slatter. But, Peter is too old for Juniors and Ashlie is too young for Seniors. And that will still be the case next season. So, that wouldn't work. I don't think either of them would want to wait until the 2026-27 season to come back to competition.

The other is Lucy Hancock. And I can see this option working. Apart from anything else, they are both from Rotherham. So presumably they already know each other well.

Of course, Lucy would also have to serve an embargo, as she was representing Hungary this season. Lucy's last international programme with Ilias Fourati was at the Santa Claus Cup on 1st December 2024. So, her embargo would end a week later than Peter's embargo. Which would rule out the last Senior Grand Prix and the penultimate Challenger. But they could do the last Challenger, assuming it doesn't clash with Nationals.

Who else could be an option for Peter? Is Sasha Fear still training, or has she moved on from the sport?

Peter is not leaving Carol Lane though.. So you may tell your British ice dance "girls" that they will need to move to Canada and perhaps even switch citizenship. It's not guaranteed that Peter would be released that quickly as a junior world medalist for Canada and as a young and promising dancer. :)

I wasn't advocating that Peter should leave Carol. In fact, I'm glad he is staying with her and Jon, because the relationship clearly works and you don't want to be changing too many things at once. It is better to have as much continuity as possible, so that if it doesn't work out, it is easier to pin-point why.

Lucy Hancock has already made it clear that she is leaving her current coaching setup in America. So we know she is moving somewhere. Perhaps that could be Canada.

But, I wouldn't say that whoever Peter's new partner will be would need to switch to Canada. We all know how many Ice Dance partnerships train in Canada but represent other countries. And the Canadian Fed should be proud of the reason why that is the case - because all the best coaches are based in Canada.

After welcoming so many coaches and skaters to their patch, if the Canadian Fed then tries to stop a young skater from returning to his home country, then shame on them! If that is how they treat people, he's better off out of it.

Layla Karnes is looking for a partner. She's the right age and has previous partnered experience at Europeans (for GBR). She just won an international solo dance competition against Lucas Appel in Atlanta.

Having compatible citizenship doesn't mean they'd be compatible as a team. Or Lucy may not want to switch to Carol Lane.

There are plenty of options for Peter that don't involve returning to representing Britain. He may want to continue representing Canada. Or he could find a partner in Canada who has dual citizenship and decide to represent Moldova. Or he'll take up solo dance.

Shame it wasn't working out for Peter and Nadiia, they were promising-looking juniors.

Whether it's Britain or Moldova, I can see that a change of representation could appeal. It's so hard for skaters to find their way into the top 3 in Canada. Obviously, in this case there's a starting point of Peter's own background for Brits to build castles in the air upon.

Clearly there's almost no link between training in a country and competing for that country. Otherwise, IAM would be stuffed.
