9th Asian Winter Games 2025 | Feb 7-14

Every one tries their best in AWG.There are 3 skaters tried 4 quad and 2 skaters tried 2 quad. It was a heated competition!Hope to see good performance in 4CC next week!

Both Kaori and Yuma treated this competition as opportunities to test jump layouts. Kaori is backloading the 3F-3T combination, Yuma is adding the 4Lz, this is all important additions to try out prior to World's and Olympics. It just so happens that Chaeyeon and most importantly, Junhwan, were the beneficiaries of their strategy.

I keep hoping that Junhwan can figure out how to add a second quad to the SP... but I'm glad he's getting consistent again right before worlds!

That's true in the case of Yuma, but I'm pretty sure Kaori has been backloading her 3F-3T at least since the GPF. Though in JNats she popped the 3T to a 2T.

As for Jun, I don't think he needs a second quad in the SP... His 3Lz3Lo is gorgeous and gets pretty high GOE, maybe he can move the combo into the 2nd half instead to get a bit more points. I'd rather he stays healthy and skate clean without risking too many quads :)

Absolutely tremendous result for Kim after let's face it, as much as I liked Sakamoto she did not deserve the lead after the short program not getting a q and underrotation for that combo, the lutz had a wrong edge and landing was on the q. All of it ignored by the officials and given big GOE instead.

I've brought all this up in another thread, but despite all this manipulation by the officials Kim did not lose motivation and skated to her maximum. The final margin should have been higher in my eyes. It's very hard to know you're up against the reigning three times champion, up against all the officials who want to see Kim lose, but then she just performs perfectly when it matter most.

I think Sakamoto is in big trouble now. She basically has no 3-3 combo (the 3-3 combo in the SP should have been given a q and < but wasn't) now I think Olympic gold will be a bridge too far.

I went to double check, and I discovered to my chagrin that you're right. It's still a WIP though... but if she gets it consistent, it could give her a slight tech advantage next year.

I do think that there is a big danger of no combo penalties... I wonder if she would consider switching the last loop with the first flip. I know the loop is a more stable jump for her, so ending with a flip is risky, but that way if she messes up her Flip combo, she still has a chance to make it up at the end.

I didn't know Yuma is also training the 4Lz, that was the first time ever he tried it I think?

I wonder if he treated this AWG as an experiment to try out new jump layout... Whether he knows Jun's situation or not, I hope this works in Jun's favour 🤞

Clearly, he did. And I admire him for it. It took guts.

Presumably, Yuma and his team can do the same math we can. He's going to enter a head-to-head with Ilia Malinin with a rather large base value deficit. While much depends on how any competitor performs on the day, his best chance to be truly competitive depends on narrowing that deficit.

Much like Malinin at GP Final and US Nationals, he decided to use this competition as a trail run for more ambitious technical content. It's smart to give it a go before the World Championship. While I'm sure he'd have liked to win, does anyone really care that he didn't?

He's fighting, and in my mind that's better than settling for a lower spot on the podium.

I don't think it's a given that she will not win the World Championship, and it's certainly not a given that she won't win the Olympics.

The Olympics are more than a year away. Even if she does not win the WC this year, history is rich with skaters who lost titles one year and went on to Olympic gold the next. Off the top of my head, Boitano and Witt both lost their WC titles before winning gold - Tara Lipinski wasn't even the reigning US Champ when she won the Olympics, and Sara Hughes never even won a US title, never mind a World one.

Any competition is about peaking at exactly the right moment. Sakamoto can certainly achieve that at any competition.

I don't think it's a given that she will not win the World Championship, and it's certainly not a given that she won't win the Olympics.
Trying to predict who will or will not/can or cannot win either singles discipline is a mug's game, especially this far out.

Junhwan did it!!!!!!!! I have been quietly crossing my fingers since his FS reveal that Loco would help him win AWG (as the previous men's winner also had Loco as his FS, LOL) and he did it!!!!!!!!! He will get the military exemption!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so, so, so, so happy.

Wow, wasn't expecting that, but great for Jun!!! Honestly, it might be more meaningful for him to peak here than at Worlds given the military exemption he gets from this. He looks healthy, and you can literally see the SWISH in the 4S. Wonderful. I'd like to advocate for the tech panel to just collectively agree to disregard any rotation calls for his +3Lo combos. Just look the other way please, lol. These combos are so rare, and his are generally pretty great. They don't deserve these < calls to discourage other skaters from trying them! 😅 I think he should withdraw from 4CC. He did University Games + Asian Games already. He doesn't need to tire himself out before he gets to Worlds. Oh, hmm, nevermind, 4CC are in Korea, so he probably won't withdraw.

So glad Yuma has lost the ovary bull shirt. He looks a bit tired and everything after the 4S kind of lost his usual height and pop, but I think the music and program really suit him. Good for him for not popping the 4Lz.

I really like Daiwei Dai. He piqued my interest at Cup of China. He has some technical issues, but I like the way he moves and expresses the music. I'm interested in his development.

I think Mikhail's long shirt looks a bit sloppy, but at the same time, the gold undershirt that peeks out every time he jumps is kind of fun, lol.

stoopid Chicago program...😝
Go back to The Matrix or The Piano for Worlds (I'll take Amelie at this point...)

Congrats to Chaeyeon! Great skate, Well deserved win!
I feared it. I feared it would be so. She spun out of the last spin at Japan winter festival. Here, her short program had iffy landings.....I think she is just tired.... so many comps.....she needs a break before worlds.....

Just watched Junhwan Cha's FS earlier. Wow! It was wonderful. It's been a long time since he skated so well. Great watch.

Yeah, that popped 3T at nats, the siting on a spin at Japan winter festival, iffy landing at the short here and yada yada yada....I think so many comps takes a toll mentally and this is a mental game. I wish Kaori the best.....but the only thing constant in figure skating is change. (Best wishes to Ye-Lim in retirement)
