2025 World Championships Pairs Free Skate

I finally had the courage to watch Deanna and Max's

One really big mistake.. that's all .... enough to lower their base value by a ton... but if Deanna had jumped that axel, and that sequence would have worked... it probably wouldn't have changed rankings or anything but it would have been close to a cleanish performance.

The throw loop will get attended this summer I guess.

I am proud of Max as he looked completely dialed in. His jumps were stronger than usual.

Their lifts were just stellar. So yeah... a tough competition for them but i cannot be disappointed with this skate considering the season they've had.

Can I ask where are you rewatching?
CBC.

you need to be Canadian... temporarily.

I just watched Lia and Trennt...

oh well.. the jumps didn't work.. That's their strength... so it's weird... lowered the base value

All 3 Canadian teams had issues getting the sequence in, which was extremely costly for them.

Now, just watched Efimova and Mitrofanov... She really cannot land these jumps but she made them work so that she is not losing as many points... very short of rotation with touching down with the free foot etc... It will keep setting them back... it can work in smaller competitions but not at worlds.

Than you!

Just watched Kam O'Shea...

I think they were overmarked by a bit. I like them but they just cannot land these throws and also the jump sequence wasn't good.. .so when you have 4 tricky elements and only manage 1, it's going to be costly.

KMT said they were not reviewing Danny's 3toe... so that would mean that if they had, 4 out of 4 risky elements would be unsuccessful because he apparently two-footed it.. oh well..

I wonder what will happen with them after the Olympics considering she's 20 and he is 34...

oh noooo miniki... they were stellar until the last lift.

BUT.. that program sucks.... sorry... you cannot be world champions with such a washed down 4 seasons... gorgeous elements but the last lift... they jump so well together, despite a bit far apart... the throws are so nice too...

sigh...

R/R cannot believe the judges didn't penalize them more for their two footed throws and short jumps on the sequence...

i like them and their programs way more than miniki and conti macii but they were lucky here.... of course, they had a lead and their PCS shouldn't be affected much by their type of mistakes but yeah... landing throws on two feet used to be a much bigger hindrance to a team just a few years back..

this competition felt like a fake it till you make it type of event...

Pairs in Montreal were so much more satisfying to watch.

Are you surprised they didn’t review Danny’s 3T with how the Americans have been scored at this event?

I just finished watching Pairs.

It was disappointing to me. First, I couldn’t watch LIVE because I was working. So, I waited and waited for them to post the event video. As I was waiting, they posted a video with Deanna and Max placing 5th…. Damn it! That spoiled the result for me. Then, I refresh 30 minutes and then a video posted with JPN winning gold. Damn it!! I didn’t want to know who won 😡

So, I watched all 20 Pairs knowing who placed 5th and 1st.

The Canadian Pair teams all screwed their sequences. Unusual for them. Kelly always usually nails her 3S. Then, I was furious when Trentt didn’t go for the 2A 2A sequence. I think he stopped hoping Lia would stop and when she went for 2A, it was too late. Then, Trentt with the salchow pop infuriated me. I was so sad knowing they lost the third spot.

Then, Deanna came out and when I saw her smiling during warm up, I thought that can’t be good. Then, she screwed up the sequence horribly…. They could have placed 4th. Sigh…

The Italians deserved bronze. It was a good performance and I’m happy for them. I knew all four teams in the last group would beat the Canadians since I knew they finished 5th, so I was rooting for the Italians to beat the team from Georgia and they did.

After the Germans skated, even with the last mistake, I thought, how did the Germans not win. When they made the last mistake on the lift, I did think, this may have cost them the gold medal and it turns out, it did.

I watched the Japanese team relaxed knowing they won. I was hoping they would clean skate and win by a lot. When they made three minor mistakes, I thought, how the hell did they win. But, they do have harder jumps and more speed than the Germans and a lead from SP.

After my disappointment with our Canadian skates, I guess I can be happy that the Canadian camp won gold medal. Meagan is a remarkable coach even though she plays a smaller role. When the Japanese went for 2A 2A sequence and harder jumps, that has Meagan influence all over it.

Edit: Also, to those who mentioned M/G from Russia. That pairs team has been the best pairs team in the world for three straight years. They consistently score over 230 domestically and would do so, internationally, as well. However, I’m happy to report that JPN and GER pairs teams AVG from EUR/4CC and Worlds is higher than the Nationals/Cup 2nd and 3rd best teams from Russia. The world’s pair event has improved a lot. I’m looking forward to more GER and JPN showdowns. I like both teams equally.

Same here. They put up a good fight. And I don't think they were too disappointed wih the outcome either. We've seen them more unsatisfied after a skate (especially Deanna can't hardly hide when she isn't happy with it).

LOVED Minerva and Nikita, such a shame about that lift. But one step higher than last year, so I'm happy with that too.

Pairs at the Olympics will be quite the event. Can't wait!

But, if I'm not mistaken, it just did work at worlds. Come on, let Alisa and Misha have their magical moment, like Deanna and Max had one (perhaps of many) at last year's Worlds. Like many others, Deanna and Max haven't been completely consistent with their jumps either before or after Worlds 2024.

I mean, there is precedent for reigning world champions to not win the Olympics ;) let's hope Nikita gets his citizenship in time!!

Canada, Italy and Germany all with 2 spots at the Olympics. Those will be nervous national championships...
He has his language test in May I think...and if he fails it, there's enough time to try again.

For the Germans I guess not so nervous. We have three pairs at senior level and Roscher/Schuster aren't there yet. I think Hase/Volodin and Hocke/Kunkel will go to Milan.

I'm still so emotional about this event. This is my dream podium and I'm so happy for my babes and even more happy that Ioulia says Michał is the nice and supportive pairs guy.
And now with Katia in for FS and Olympics (redemption skate please?), ice dance can't hurt me? I don't expect anything from Sofia and Victor and italian robots cannot miss the podium? Right?

Mishina/Galliamov will win the Olympics. They shouldn't have any problems with the qualifier event.
I am a big fan of Mishina/Galliamov and will be delighted to see them win the Olympics because at least I know the likelihood of them winning with 2 clean skates is really, really high and they are a super consistent and dynamic team. I just can’t bear seeing Miura/Kihara continue to be the judge’s pets and yet never managing to skate 2 clean programs. Last night was a total travesty of judging corruption. The Japanese skated much better than that last year at Worlds and managed a 144.35, yet they skate a noticeably sloppier FS last night and still get a 143.22. As a fan, it is incredibly frustrating to see such sloppy execution be rewarded with a gold medal. I like and am a fan of all of M/G, M/K, H/V, S-D/D, and C/M, but, first and foremost, I want to see the cleanest pair win gold.

I think the biggest question mark for me raised over this outcome is why isn’t the ISU consistent with what they wish to reward across all disciplines and all championships? People say M/K were rewarded with the gold because of their greater speed, skating skills, and choreography, which gives them the edge over H/V. Okay, then why didn’t Kagiyama beat Malinin yesterday in the SP if that’s really the case? Kagiyama should be beating Malinin every time he skates clean if speed, skating skills and choreography are really the deciding factor of medal outcomes.

I think their magical moment was US Nationals. They skated better there IMHO.
Consistency with jumps seems to escape everyone but here is something I'd like to clarify.

If Trennt and Lia mess up a big sequence, i am like... ok.. strange... they can land these 4/5 in competition.
Deanna and Max are not the greatest jumpers but I have seen them, and the whole skating community, have seen them land these jumps maybe 2/3 of the times in competition, including on the biggest stage last year.
R/R : her triple toe is 9/10 q or <
Efimova : her rotation is almost never complete and she most likely will secure the jump with the free foot..

ETC..

So to me, there are three types of mistakes

Fluke or bad luck
Mental

These two types : they can actually perform these jumps.

The third type is more like : cannot perform the element but squeezes it by because they have to do so... (happens on the twist for some teams like the Australian team who have stellar jumps)
I would out Efimova Mitrofanov in this third type of jumping category.

In my opinion, world medalists in pairs should be able to do it all, most of the times.

It is interesting to me a team that had a minor issue on the dismount of a lift can be scolded for not keeping their focus to the end over a team with multiple major two foot errors and a visible <.

I’ve seen comments that H/V don’t have the same speed and ice coverage, and while this is true, the disparity just isn’t enough to justify a loss when their opponents made multiple errors.

H/V cover the ice beautifully and use plenty of difficult transitions. In fact I think they skate very similarly in style to Russian pairs that have been rewarded with 150+ in the past with with similar skates to this, without having to zip and fly across the ice with such intensity that they lose control of the elements. It is a very classic old school way of skating and it’s typically rewarded. Something tells me if their name was M/G they would have easily won this title with nary a word of “speed” and “ice coverage”.

The program isn’t bad either. It does start out a little slow but it builds all the way to the final lift at the end. Very effective.

M/K also skated similarly at GPF with major errors and the result was different even when H/V were not squeaky clean.

The missed level on the lift was fair, but -2 and -3 was utter insanity. You are supposed to take into consideration the quality of the rest of the element in assigning the GOE. That was a 0 to -1 lift at most. The rest of it was fantastic period.

The scoring of American pairs on home ice made sense, but I can’t figure out why or how this happened when it seemed like things have been trending in a better direction in terms of the scoring since the ban.

I can’t think of a single result I have disagreed with more than this since before the 2022 Olympics and that’s saying a lot. Don’t even get me started on the blatant underscoring of the British team (who are at this point way better than K/O). This was total favoritism and an affront to small federations. Disgusting.

I think it had a lot to do with Alisa and Misha overperforming expectations by quite a lot, and Ellie and Danny finishing about where I expected.

But, I'm interested. What would your placements have been, taking both segments into account? I don't see where it would be any worse than where they ended up... 6th and 7th. That's not home cookin'. That's just the placements landing where they did.
I felt that Efimova/Mitrofanov were actually underscored a bit in the SP and Kam/O'Shea overscored. I would have had E/M a place higher overall and might have K/O a place lower (I would need to look at both programmes again against the Hungarians). I think there was a little bit of homecooking for Kam and O'Shea, although not as much as we sometimes see at such events. What I find interesting is that there wasn't for Efimova/Mitrofanov.
