Jason Brown

Short Nick McCarvel interview with Jason on his podcast for Olympics.com:

Jason talks about the pressure of Worlds with new boots, implies that in hindsight, maybe competing a GP in old boots was not ideal, and his answer to Nick's asking about a two time champion as a teammate (and his tone of voice) is priceless,

Worth a listen:

It was a good, but short interview. And yes, his response to the two time champion issue is pure Jason! Been there, done that!

There is a delightful interview on Instagram from the Ronald McDonald House in Boston. The interviewer is a charming little girl! I couldn't get this embedded into media. But here's the URL

You need to use the icon with two rectangles, the front one with a mountain, the back one with a scrap of film.

It comes up as "Insert media"

Jason was sensational in Boston! seeing his skating live always gives me so much more appreciation for what he does than on camera. he is truly in a league of his own.

am i the only one who is secretly hoping he might bring back riverdance as a short next season? i'm not sure if he actually would, but i think it would be such a full circle moment.

We've been hoping for a return to Riverdance for years. I was surprised and very happy to see it as an exhibition But as the years go by, I think it's clear that he feels that moving forward is what he wants to do. Unless he can do Riverdance better than he did it in 2014 in every possible way, he won't do it for competition. And the rules have changed. That might influence how that program would be constructed. That program doesn't have a second in it to breathe, it's non stop from beginning to end. And the energy level required is tremendous. So to do it perfectly from beginning to end, would be quite a feat. If he could do that, I think he might enjoy redoing the program. But I'm pretty sure he'll want to do something else next season. We'll see!

Ashley, Adam and Sarah Hughes (not the gold medal winner) have a great podcast and their World's recap has a fairly lengthy chat about Jason at 41.00. Expect the occasional profanity, but you'll love the comments! They think exactly like we do. And I do think he gave "sass" to the journalists in the mixed zone, on purpose!" https://open.spotify.com/episode/5yLyFfIOqFfzupvNQvT1c6 The whole podcast if good, but it's 2 hours. But do listen to the part about Jason. It's very good! The Jason part lasts about 9 minutes.

Thank you for signaling where the Jason portion is, @Bookseller.

I confess I have not been a fan of Adam and Ashley's podcast, the ones I listened to had way too much meandering and thinking they were funny and interacting with the producer in an awkward way (I have no problem listening to a producer, but it was too much forced "Ain't We Got Fun" with all three).

But if they are loving on Jason, I will give them clicks :)

Thanks for the podcast link, it is well done. They make good comments about a lot of skaters. Jason certainly stepped up at Worlds and should have silenced any doubters about his age and fitness. Amazing performance!

Barring injury, I can’t see him not getting on the Olympic team along with Ilia. The bigger question will be who will get the third spot. I hope the other guys get a couple of GP assignments each.

There is a heartfelt article (in Japanese and behind the paywall) about the relationship between Jason and a little boy, so I summarized here:

https://digital.asahi.com/articles/AST4833XVT48IIPE00HM.html?ptoken=01JRAH6ZAV11ZX1N23DDH6FS3S
(there is a video clip of the surprise reunion between Jason and the boy on this page that you can watch)

Jason has been visiting and volunteering at The Ronald McDonald Houses, residential facilities for children with incurable diseases and their families, wherever he has been after the competitions or shows he has done.

This time he visited the one in Sapporo, Japan, where the SOI will be held.

Jason visited there before - in 2019, he met Aoi, then 6 years old. When Aoi was 4 years and 8 months old, he contracted Perthes' Disease, which caused partial necrosis at the base of his femur and left him unable to walk. After meeting with Jason, Aoi watched his performance. “I was impressed that Jason seemed to be having so much fun skating.”

It took Aoi 4-5 hours by car between his home and the hospital. During the difficult and lonely times while fihgting his illness, Jason's joyful appearance gave Aoi strength.

When Aoi started training to walk and posted it on his SNS, Jason commented "You are wonderful. I look forward to seeing you again!" Since then he has been trying ice skating, boxing, and various sports for rehabilitation.

This time, Jason visited the McDonald House in Sappro for the first time in 5.5 years. Aoi turned 11 years old. The reunion was a surprise to Jason. Aoi had prepared a message in English. Aoi conveyed his thoughts and feelings word for word to Jason, who could not hide his surprise. "I have missed you so much“ Aoi said, ”(Now) I (can) go to school every day.

Jason said “Wow.” Speaking in Japanese, "Aoi, who was in a wheelchair, started skating. I could see that he never gave up and worked hard. I was the one who was more energized and encouraged by Aoi."

Jason and Aoi promised to skate together on the 9th (this Wednesday).

Aoi said "If you can enjoy doing things (like Jason), it makes both you and the other person enjoy doing things. That's how I want to spend my time. The next time I see Jason, I want to show him that I have become even stronger."

Thank you @YukiNieve, for the article and the translation.

I believe this is the boy who came to see Jason again. So happy they will get to skate together.

(and IIRC, being told by others as I sadly do not speak one word of Japanese, he was joking by asking the little boy how old he was. He said six, and Jason said "I'm six too")
