Why was Skate America moved to November?

NYC and Lake Placid are almost 2 completely different worlds.

Now, do I think it would be cool if they held Skate America at Madison Square Garden? Yes. Do I think it’s likely to happen? No.

Also, I don’t know about anyone else, but from NYC, Boston is closer than Lake Placid, and it’s also kind of a pain to get to. Plus, there’s a lot more to do in Boston than there is in Lake Placid.

And I do agree that people are much less likely to come to the US, now, especially since Worlds tickets were bought long before any of the current turmoil began. Spending the money now is a completely different story, and frankly I don’t blame Canadians for not wanting to come here.
Minz, I dont know anyone who blames Canadians for not wanting to come here....or Japanese or Koreans or Taiwanese. I know lots of Americans who blame our founding fathers for not providing the people a way to recall the whole government! :cheer2:

I heard at Worlds by a follow journalist that Angers wasn‘t able to host the event at the originally planed weekend as they wouldn’t be able to get the venue for that weekend.

So they were still willing to host but had to find someone to swap with.

Looks like they found that partner in Skate America.
Makes sense and this is not the first time SA was not the first GP.

Still, I think the founding fathers did their part, and now it is the responsibility of the American people to do theirs.

When Benjamin Franklin presented his final arguments for the acceptance of the Constitution, he was asked, "Well, Doctor, so what have we got -- a republic or a monarchy.?" Franklin replied, "A republic, if you can keep it."

This debate caught my ear years ago when famed "historian" Alistair Cooke talked about this period. Others did too. Do we have a democracy or a Republic? https://mises.org/mises-wire/stop-s...AMfam-hZFN_BNz5SwATCxmNu8ntJosO8aAgLpEALw_wcB I think Al Gore said it bluntly and in the best way. To paraphrase him, "Look, during election season I had to spend six hours a day begging for money from corporate America on the phone so I could run TV ads" Is that democracy?

So the constitution gives the people the power to change things drastically during the mid term elections, but will they? Paraphrasing Alistair Cooke, "During the revolution, 1/3 were patriots, 1/3 were tories, and 1/3 didnt give a da##."

Great evil is down when good people do nothing. I feel for our forum members in the US and for Canada and Japan and S. Korea and Taiwan.

SA Portland 2010 was lighter attended but still had some good skaters. Including a real Georgian with an interesting past.
IIRC there were so few fans they let anyone into the gala....
The most memorable moment was when PaulE and I were sitting together at practice in row 1 and Sui/Han were doing a throw and she went down very hard right in front of us, maybe into the boards. He picked her up and held her and comforted her. She was pretty shaken.

Lake Placid (which is impossible to get to and great if you want an audience composed of people from NY, NJ and PA)

It all depends on one's personal point of view. We LOVED driving to Lake Placid and I have no idea what you mean by saying it's impossible to get to. We drove from Michigan and spent a night along the way, just like we did when driving to Nationals at Greensboro, NC; and St. Paul, MN, and Kansas City, MO. It was a beautiful drive. Granted, we're from Michigan and we know how to drive in snow.

Also, Lake Placid is a lovely community to visit and great figure skating and hockey history to love. Lake Placid 1980, for instance.

I wish they'd choose Detroit for SA, which is by far the best ice rink I've been to. Probably too late to schedule it there though. :)

@CoyoteChris, Thanks for the reminder about that interesting skater Tugba Karadinir  from Turkey (now Türkiye). She began skating when the first rink opened in that country and her entire kindergarten class was enrolled as part of the physical education curriculum. much later moving to Canada for senior level training.

There was some controversy back home about her performing in standard figure skating costumes which did no conform to traditional
Muslim dress requirements for women..

I enjoyed her. I did not know about the controversy. I know certain countries now are more strict. (My brother in law is from Iran and left when the Shaw was deposed) There are many wonderful people I meet from Indonesia when I cruise and that is 87% Islam. You would never know it.
Tuğba Karademir spent most of her life in Canada IIRC and got married in 2021. Wonder what she is doing now?

I loved Lake Placid for SA. Lovely little city. A journey from Spokane, though. Flew to Buffalo and rented a car. Lightly attended except when Yuna was on the ice. Bus fulls of supporters came up from the NYC area and would pop into the rink when she was on the ice, then they would leave. I am 6 ft 2 in and I could not see over the person in front of me so I never sat in my own seat during the entire comp. I just seat hopped around and sat with friends.

I went in 2017 when it was there. Best Thanksgiving weekend ever. It’s incredibly beautiful.

I think that this was the first year that they switched Skate America from its first-of-the-season place. SA (usually first) switched with the Russian event (usually last).

We were at SA in Lake Placid in 2017, which was so beautiful; and we got to see Aljona Savchenko and Bruno Massot ! before they were, well, Aljona and Bruno :)

the way I remember it, the dates were exchanged exchanged with the Japanese Grand Prix , the NHK.

Anyway. it was specifically because of proximity to the Pyongchang Olympics, IIRC. Something related to location, the continents. It had nothing to do with tv schedules or manipulation.

On the Drive up from Buffalo, I was surprised that NY had saved so much land from the developers....Trying to remember Flatt beating Yuna in the free......I think this is the last time I saw Fumie live.....I dont remember Madison Chock / Greg Zuerlein but I remember everyone saying happy birthday to Xue. I remember seeing Tan and her parents at the airport in Buffalo on the way home...she was sitting and holding her face due to a toothache so I just said hello to her folks.
