Why was Skate America moved to November?

We were @ 2017 Skate America in Lake Placid. It was a great opportunity for us as we were in Albany, NY for Thanksgiving Day with my brother in law & family (a Thanksgiving tradition for us for years). Normally we would have spent the whole Thanksgiving Weekend with him, but we started our stay in Albany one day earlier than usual & explained that it was a chance to finally get to see Skate America there (we did the same thing when we finally got to see the SOI debut show in Lake Placid in November 2010). A great experience - Satoko Miahara, Kaori Sakamoto, & Bradie Tennell on the Women's podium, Aliona & Bruno in the K&C - I threw out little yellow rubber duckies on the ice & Aliona was holding one of them in the K&C. We also allowed some time for sightseeing in the area & came home the following Tuesday (retirement has its perks).

I wish they'd choose Detroit for SA, which is by far the best ice rink I've been to. Probably too late to schedule it there though. :)
me too, the new arena is awesome. Detroit hasn't held SA since 2013 which was in the old Joe Louis arena. i remember at 2019 nationals there were grumbles Detroit would hold worlds at some point the next several years after, but it sadly never happened.

I thought for sure there would be a Worlds in Detroit. It's a great arena. I wonder if maybe it's considered too big for Skate America? It holds 19,000 or so people.

Adding: They do seem to be going for smaller venues. SCOB in Norwood and then Allen, TX 2 years in a row. Vegas.

I would love for it to be at Lake Placid. I went to SA there in 2009 and it was great. Probably one of my favorite skating events based on how it was set up. Skating belongs there and they know how to host skating. Not too crowded, little town, hotel you can walk to the arena from. I'll be there in a minute if they decide to have it at Lake Placid.

I heard the same.

It all depends on one's personal point of view. We LOVED driving to Lake Placid and I have no idea what you mean by saying it's impossible to get to. We drove from Michigan and spent a night along the way, just like we did when driving to Nationals at Greensboro, NC; and St. Paul, MN, and Kansas City, MO. It was a beautiful drive. Granted, we're from Michigan and we know how to drive in snow.

Also, Lake Placid is a lovely community to visit and great figure skating and hockey history to love. Lake Placid 1980, for instance.

If one is able to make that drive, it is ok. Not my favorite, but…the last time i under took that drive was to see Gracie at Cranberry Cup in Norwood. It took me 2 full (12+ hour) days to get there. Due to my disability i need to get out and walk around so i have to stop more than most.

I was so excited by the whole thing I barely slept. It took me 4 days to drive home and I hadn’t budgeted for that. Fortunately i had hotel points. My hands swelled up like Mickey Mouse hands. 15 minutes after i got home i was headed to the ER. Worth it? Absolutely yes. But I put a strict 8-10 hour limit on my driving.

I don’t expect USFS to hold SA in a place convenient to me every year and accept there are some i won’t be able to attend.

I'm glad you had the hotel points and were able to stop and recuperate as much as possible. I certainly wouldn't discount your personal experience. But I was puzzled by your first description of the drive as "impossible" ... which to me implied that it was impossible for others as well.

Also, driving alone is a completely 'nother story. Sorry you have such unhappy memories of that trip.

It was an amazing trip. I saw my Queen. I saw Jimmy. I met Danny’s dad. I saw the Lake Placid ice dance comp because the Lake Placid facility was being renovated. I sat in the Tenley Albright seat.

It’s just next time I will take the train.

Based on this "hint" from USFS, Lake Placid it is. (although mountains??? yes I know the Adirondacks are called mountains, I'm an East Coaster after all) but hockey and gold medals and snow seem to point in that direction.

Sadly, this doesn't appear to be Vegas in any way, shape or form. Not a 🏜 or 🎰 emoji in sight. 😔

I've been to Vegas more than I care to (for work, no not in the entertainment industry :) ). Their hills are smaller than the Adirondacks. ;) and no snow in sight.....

I would think that hockey would be a reference to the Miracle on Ice. But that's the joy of emojis😁

I have driven to Lake Placid and can assure you that it is surrounded by mountains, and involves navigating up, down, and around twisty mountain roads.

Beautiful place, though, and a great location for skating, once you get there :)
