The problem with tangos is that it seems to be a go to for choreos/skaters/coaches when they don't know what to pick.. so they go tango..and go for the clichés.... When there is an artistic concept behind it, it can be wonderful

I think that the problem with tangos for a single skater is that the dance itself is so partnership oriented that it looks strange for someone to do half a tango.

Je Suis Malade (especially Lara Fabian's version) - That said, I still loved Efimona & Mitrafonov's free skate!
Nothing personal against Michael Buble (we have seen him in cocnert & enjoyed him immensely), but I do remember this. I think it was @ 2016 Worlds in Boston. There were several teams (pairs & dance) who skated to "Feelin' Good." You could hear the groans in the audience when the music came on repeatedly.

Some or most of the tangoes mentioned here are from OLD programs. Maybe originally they were wonderful but just like Carmen and Phantom and a few others mentioned, they've been skated to death! And I can tolerate pretty much any music if it's skated to well.....or is age appropriate. When I hear these old war horses I just automatically think of lazy choreographers that have little or no imagination. And as much as I can appreciate Benoit Richaud's choreo, the music is usually dark and dreary. JMO.

That's simply because I tend to put programs in the WOW category if I still watch them for years to come.
More recently, Piper and Paul (I had mentioned them) Free dance from this year is a great take on a tango. Cha's Loco is fabulous. Turkkila and Versluis did a brilliant tango program a few years ago. Lia and Trennt's LP this year was just perfect ! There are some good ones and some bad ones every year... but eliminating all tangos is not the solution.
I agree with @Mathman that solo tangos are harder sell but then : Patrick Chan, or Shoma...
For me the issue is more the fact that sometimes, tangos are given to skaters to develop their connection with the audience and music as it is a rather simpler theme to grasp... but if it is simple to understand, it requires intensity and sharp timing.. so when weaker skaters are given a tango, the music washes them out.... and the program is completely lame

When we moan about warhorses and over-saturation (and also sometimes the skaters all looking/doing the same these days die to the tech they need to get in and the way it's judged) we should remember it could be - and has been as some folk here would know - much much worse... I came across this elsewhere yesterday and had to share

At least these days if a heap of them do Dune or POTO or whatever (Boney M in the rhythm dance, oh god) it's their own choice and they can cut it, and choreograph... a little bit different?

The dancers in that clip were wonderful!
As for,"this can't be an Olympic sport because everybody does the same thing" -- utter nonsense. In every sport everybody does the same thing. In archery, you shoot an arrow and try to hit the bullseye. Then you shoot another arrow and try to hit the bullseye. And then the next competitor comes out and tries to hit the bullseye. And then...
As for Scott Hamilton, IIRC in his autobiography Landing It he mentions that when he was a teenager he used to earn pocket money by partnering little girls when they took their dance tests. Being small himself, he didn't tower over his little proteges and although he was not an ice dancer himself, being Scott Hamilton, it was no problem for him to pick up the steps of the basic dances at various levels. Now here he is biting the hand that fed him! *tsk tsk*

I love Carmen and Swan Lake.
I do NOT love the monochromatic boring ballads that so many skaters perform to these days. I can only assume they have no skills to interpret music, because there's nothing in that music TO interpret.

[Just caught a typo in time: Lice at Red Rocks. Was strongly tempted to leave it in, just for giggles.]
Decades ago I bought my first Phantom of the Opera CD with Crawford and Brightman singing. It was the first time I heard all the songs and this became one of my favourite CDs. I don't like Phantom of the Opera in skating anymore though. I don't like most tango programs either and most Carmen skating bores me. There are only a very few exceptions I enjoy rewatching.
I'd rather see programs to these 3 than to Je suis malade though, can't stand that song.
No matter how annoying the public thinks a piece of music is, skaters shouldn't stop skating to it if they like it. Unexpectedly we might see a masterpiece to that music. Once in many many generic programs, there will be a special program. I tend to mute or lower the volume when someone skates to music I dislike, and if I enjoy the skating I might actually tune the volume back up. The skater and choreographer have created something special then to make me like that music again, well, for that program anyway.

I think there are certain pieces of music that "belong" to certain skaters. For example - no one should skate to Bolero other than Torvill and Dean. No one should skate to Reel Around the Sun/Riverdance other than Jason Brown. No one should skate to East of Eden other than Michelle Kwan (sorry Gracie!) There are just certain pieces of music that are so identifiable with certain skaters that when others skate to the same music it almost spoils it. Also lately the music choices of some have just been wretched - the music isn't skateable but this year's Worlds seemed to have a lot of that. I almost prefer the warhorses to music without any lyricism or that doesn't evoke emotional expression.
