Why was Skate America moved to November?

Colorado or SLC would be my guess
Those would seem like good guesses if Lake Placid hadn't already been seriously rumored about... Although now that I think about it, Salt Lake City could be an outside possibility because it also held an Olympics. If Salt Lake City comes to pass, then I'd seriously like to go! :) I only barely saw that city on a road trip and would love to explore it more!
I've been to Vegas more than I care to (for work, no not in the entertainment industry :) ). Their hills are smaller than the Adirondacks. ;) and no snow in sight.....

I would think that hockey would be a reference to the Miracle on Ice. But that's the joy of emojis😁
My father lives in Las Vegas, which is why I have also been there more times than I care to admit. The times Skate America was held there were thoroughly enjoyable for me (and my dad loved seeing Vincent Zhou in 2021)! It's also a short flight away from where I live. No snow in Vegas, but plenty of frozen daiquiris and a bar made entirely out of ice, lol. 😂 It's not a city that I would love to live in by any means, but one has to admit that there are plenty of things to do and see there...

I like your way of interpreting the emojis, even though they refer to a city that's incredibly far from me. 🥲

Salt Lake or Colorado Springs would be great, except for the altitude difficulties. Personally, I'd love SLC.
Since I will be on a cruise to Panama, it will be Vegas, SLC or some place on the west coast. :angry2: I have to book a year out to get 17 days of free internet, free booze, and free tipping so I cant change the date of the cruise....Life is tough! But when you are handed lemons, you make lemonaide I guess. At least the crew will talk with me on a cruise ship...LOL!

Bring the crew to Skate America!

Is there some place on a cruise ship (never been on one myself) like a sports bar where they'll have a TV and you could tip the staff to show SA if possible? You might make some converts to skating among other passengers watching ;).

Back in 1988 when the Olympics was in Calgary, the hometown of Rod and Karen Garossino, Rod was in a rather rough sports bar with his brother when an evening replay was being shown of the ice dance final. He was wearing his Canadian team jacket and white Stetson, and cringed when he and his sister showed up on screen in sequins et al. Suddenly a man further down the bar shouted, "Hey, isn't that you?!" while Rod tried to hide his face in his drink. He and his brother were all prepared to fight their way out, but the crowd of assorted oil workers and cowboys watched raptly and applauded at the end :cheer::clap: .

Good question! There are no sports bars or TVs in bars. People actually talk to each other. Now with Starlink, they could have that but right now, the TV in the room has some sports. Somehow, people prefer to do other things like live dance shows and string quartets..or watch the sun set. People with upper level internet can however stream.....

BTW, PaulE and I have been there and its a beautiful place for SA. Good restaurants and no big city hustle and bustle. Reasonalbly priced hotels. But it was 2009 and I was younger. If flew Spokane to Buffalo, and rented a car and drove up that night. Nice drive. But not a cheep quick trip from the left coast.

Officially Lake Placid:

Also they don't have a Challenger in the other events included in the calendar. So is there a Challenger in North America?

I had to say, sorry for our West Coast friends, the Miracle on Ice emojis were giveaways to me. I was teasing about what we call mountains in the East. :)

I have been on many a cruise with bars’ big screens playing sports. But they are NFL games that will attract the cruisers to drink, are specifically scheduled and promoted in the cruise daily. Sadly, they will not consider skating important enough for that.

I hate to ask because I understand the allure of free internet and free booze, but free tipping? How does that work? My understanding is many staff members really depend on that part of their income. Sorry don't want to be OT.

I do like the idea of Lake Placid for SA. Quite frankly, I just want it to be at a venue that is well run and decently attended.

A quick OT answer: When a cruise offers a “comp” that includes free tipping, the crew still gets the same tips — paid for by the company. This is a nice perk because usually, the cruise customer pays for them via daily billing.

I dont doubt you have but in 16 cruises, I have never seen one. I sail only Holland America. No go cart tracks, no water slides...and few kids. People make fun of me going on cruises where you have to dodge the scooter plug in stations.....and there are few dance floors and fewer loud, blareing rock bands.... but I have no interest on being on a floating city full of party boat people.....I want to be on a ship. That rocks and rolls.

HAL has a sneaky plan to help us pax out, help HAL out, and help out the crew members. Many countries dont tax tips. So we get "billed" $17 a day that we can opt out of that goes into a tip fund for the crew members that serve us. Its called "crew gratuity". In any case, I carry a wad of cash and tip many people every day, and my room stewards at the end of the boat ride, but I also pay the crew gratuity. If you book out far enough, HAL picks up your daily Crew Grantuity payment out of their own pocket. The beverage staff, hotel staff, and restaurant staff work really hard...11 hours a day or more with a break, 7 days a week...8 months. I tip them cash which doesnt go into any fund and they appreciate it. They are in many cases supporting 3 generations back home. AND they are friendly. Asian people are the best!

Exactly! So the comp can include free drinks and booze, free internet, free onboard spending credit, specialty restaurants that others would pay $40 for, free excursions, and paid crew gratuity. All on HAL's dime. And the crew doesnt lose out on anything. I am so grateful they are willing to work so hard to please us pax. Such nice interesting people.....

Sadly, this may be one of the last well run venues, if it even still is. There was a time where venues /events were locally run. You bought a physical ticket...sometimes in the form of an ornate looking credential for an all event pass, and local people could change anything that was not right on the fly..... now, I am seeing news stories about big ticket companies running everything from afar and making people have a smart phone and a gpay app and charging "convienience" fees and lots of other garbage fees...when I was at an SA in California, the decision was made on the fly to open up the practices to anyone....at Spokane 2007, an on site person made the decision to give away hundreds of tickets to novice dance, for instance....people had a ball....

You are right, I have never sailed Holland America. I have no problem with quiet ships, but I have no problem with party ships either, doesn't mean I need to party ;)

(although I enjoy watching them. Costumes just like skaters. )

And I like Lake Placid as a host for SA, although I realize it may be an enormous pain for anyone west of the Mississippi, or maybe even west of the Ohio.
