2025-2026 Canadian Figure Skating

Not quite. Though she does have a connection to Buianova, as she was coached by Ekaterina Moiseeva first, who now co-coaches with Buianova. And the other skater I was thinking of was coached by Buianova later in her career.

Vika's former coach only had a small number of notable (former) students, so you might not know her, especially as both only became more well-known after switching to other coaches. Think about it in terms of skaters, who could she remind you of? Special hint: Axel technique.
I looked it up... will give a chance to someone else to play :)

I clearly have no clue about Victoria Barakhtina. However, I'd be curious to know what she has that other Canadian women do not have. When Uliana's transfer was announced, many said she would easily be on top of Canadian skating. Turns out she is not. A lot of potential but not a complete package yet. Unless Victoria has a triple axel or quads, to beat Canadian woman skaters, she will indeed need it all.
I didn't mean any shade towards other Canadian women at all! 💌 I just believe she's a well-rounded skater with an extremely good potential, who wouldn't become intl. senior eligible until, i believe, 2027/28 anyway. That's why i'm talking about the next olympic quad - i really doubt Maddie and KMS, for example, will stick around that long, so the canadian ladies assignments could really be up for grabs.

Understood. I have now watched Viktoria. She's far superior to Uliana. However, until she even shows up at a competition, all of this is just a pipe dream, right ? I am not sure Maddie has a third Olympics in sight... she's still quite young but KMS is definitely not sticking for 4 more years. A lot can happen in just one year, let alone 4... My main hope right now is that whoever will get that elusive spot will see it as a happy and joyful opportunity and not a super stressful responsibility. I'd like to see someone skate like Maddie did at the team event... and for sure hope that nobody will feel the pressure Roman felt in the team event when Keegan was stuck with positive daily covid tests...

As long as she is allowed to compete with all the crazy (not to use the word I really want to use) restrictions on both sides, it's all up to her, just like it was up to Shiryaeva. They know they have to be four heads taller to get assignments, not just one. It's just how things are for immigrants.
Uliana was given opportunities. She hasn't really taken them, though, and has dropped down the standings compared to other Canadian skaters who got opportunities later and did take them (e.g. Katherine Medland-Spence). Uliana has lots of potential, but she is not addressing her weaknesses in skating skills and performance. She also has started to go backwards from a technical point of view. Uliana has a decision to make regarding how much she wants skating success. If she wants it, she needs to move to a different coach who is able to help her more with skating skills and performance skills. If not, she will continue to underachieve compared to her potential.

With all due respect, many Canadian skaters who represented or are currently representing Canada are immigrants or their parents were immigrants. Patrick Chan, Keegan Messing, Stephen Gogolev, Roman Sadovsky are just a few men that come to mind. Plenty of pairs and dancers and ladies as well. It has nothing to do with being an immigrant. More likely a reflection of her being used to a very strict training regime in Russia (e.g. being weighed every single day) and now having tasted more freedom in Canada (as she should), there isn't as much progress. If every country treated its skaters the way Russia does, everyone would be jumping quads. But we live in a democratic society where people are treated with respect and dignity, and we play by the rules. So naturally, the result is going to differ. And lets not forget, Russia inflates the PCS of its skaters and generally speaking, those same PCS aren't reproduced when competing outside of Russia.

At the July and August Ontario competitions, my understanding is that Viktoria is eligible to compete so failure to compete there is very unlikely to be tied to her "immigrant" status but could be a) she is competing at NextGen b) she was late getting her registration in (there is a waiting list for August) c) she isn't where she needs to be in her training to compete (new programmes, injury) d) she and her coaches have a different competition plan that doesnt involve summer competitions (keep us guessing). So, fun to speculate - hope she gets a chance to compete against our Cdn women tho. The videos were very nice.

Skate Ontario has an interview with Lia/Trennt as part of their series in the lead up to Milan:

Robert Brodie interviews David Bondar:
“The main thing is to get that quad out there and start landing it in competition,” said Bondar, who’s also done some work on the quad Salchow. “Right now I’m really pushing the toe. I’ve been landing it, but it’s not completely consistent. And that’s my main goal in the next couple of weeks, to sort of improve that consistency before NextGen.”

Has the entry list for next gen been published yet?
Not yet, the team hasn't been formally announced yet either. There are some entries that have been stated (like here and Desrochers/Thrasher), or can be inferred (David Li, Grayson Long and Megan Woodley are on entries for Junior domestic competitions when they're Senior domestically.) Connaught posted their Junior Pair teams during monitoring with the NextGen director and the Carandiucs posted themselves in the new NextGen jackets.

I am not sure why they take so much time announcing when clearly, the athletes already know... It's in Gatineau this year, close by for me... well, relatively. Would knowing ahead of time who will compete entice me to go there ? (I am not even sure the competition is open to public because there is so much mystery around it that well... who knows...)

Anyways... marketing takes time... and it would be nice to announce the team a month or so before the event.

And they still can't convert CM to imperial in the athlete pages properly.
i guess that's because they are using the converter on google... which gives you 5.5 feet meaning 5 and 6 inches... the .5 being the decimal not the inches ;) i have made that mistake before, a long time ago... one would think that people know how to use the converter by now.

For heights, I use the Google converter to convert to inches instead of feet, then subtract 60 or 72, as appropriate, for the 5 (or 6) feet. I always did it that way, and it took me a minute to understand your post!

that's another way of doing it ;) which they haven't figured out either :)

Gabrielle Daleman signed with Tonbara Sports for representation:

It does note her training location is Colorado Springs. There was a rumour on Twitter that she changed coaches to Tammy Gambill.

Would have prefer that she choose to be coach by Tom Zakrajsek instead of Tammy Gambill. But no matter what I hope this change of coach will pay off for her :)
