Do I need new boots?

Hi everyone! Apologies if this is a silly question.

I’m 25, about 150lbs, and I’ve been skating in Jackson Evos for about three years. I started skating recreationally (maybe 4-5 times a month) and now skate more often (2-3 times a week). I’m in LTS, and not working on anything crazy (forwards and backwards crossovers) but I’ve started to feel like my skate is not supporting me as much as it used to. I’ve changed laces and insoles, but still feel like I lack support. Is it possible that my skates have broken down? I don’t notice any creasing except around the lace holes and on the tongue, but I assumed that was normal wear and tear. Just wondering if they’ve reached the end of their life and I’ll need new skates. Thanks, :)

:wave2: Jackson Evos are not nearly strong enough for an adult skater with your stats. Although they're advertised for a beginner, an adult beginner needs more support from stiffer skates than a child, right from the start. If you've been wearing the same pair for three years and are now skating two to three times per week, then they've definitely reached the end and are not safe for you anymore.

Tell us your foot shape (the line of your toes) and whether you have high, medium or low arches and we can suggest the brands and models that might fit you best. It's better if you can consult a good boot fitter, though, so if you tell us where you live someone can direct you to the nearest good skate shop. (Rink pro shops and sporting goods stores are not knowledgeable enough for measuring your feet and ankles. The measurements, by the way, need to be taken by someone else. Trying to measure your own feet can distort their shape just enough to be crucial. Your boots have to fit more snugly than street shoes with no room to wiggle or shift, especially around the heel.)

Good luck!

Hi! Thanks so much for your reply :) I have an Egyptian foot shape, and medium arches. I’m located in NYC! I plan to get fitted, but didn’t want to get new skates if I didn’t need to yet.

I'm on the Pacific coast, so I'll leave it to others to suggest a shop or two in your area. But you do need new boots (for blades, regular MK Pro or Coronation Ace will see you through many levels as you advance). Probably Jackson isn't the best brand for you with an Egyptian foot. That's my foot shape also, and I did wear Jacksons for many years, but then they changed the shape of the basic last and now the toe box doesn't fit me. I wear Risports and have a pair of Riedell boots that I repurposed for roller skating. Graf is also good for your foot shape. I'll let others suggest models in those brands for your age, technical level, and weight. (What height are you also?)

You'll be amazed at the difference when you start using stronger boots that fit you well!

Riedell would be great for you, you could also try Edea, or Risport Royal line.

Riedell Stride 223 or Motion 255 (boot only)

Risport Royal Pro,

Edea Overture.

You will need a blade to go with since these are boots only standard Ultima Aspire XP or Mirage.

Good luck!

I'm PM you a fitter in your area.
