2025-26 Retirements, Splits and New Partnerships

New (Junior) pairs team for Spain 🇪🇸: Anita Mapelli / Noah Quesada Grau. The team trains at IceLab in Italy.

Noah previously skated with Claudia Sinclair Scotti, finishing in 18th place at Junior Worlds 2024 and 6th and 7th respectively at their two JGPs in the 2024/25 season.
On the other hand, Anita previously represented Italy as a Singles skater, placing 8th at Junior Nationals last season. Her last international competition was in December 2024, so they'll have to sit out a few more months.

You were just a second faster than I was. I need a ❓⁉️ reaction for this. They literally competed less than a week ago, and they didn't even do badly at all.
@saine is always a click or two ahead of us :)

When teams retire or split after the first competition of the season (hello Marly) I often think it's either one of two things
1) Commitment level of one of the partners not matching the other
2) Realizing that they don't want to compete/train at the highest level anymore and it's better to end things before the real season starts and too much work has been done to back out.

I find that it also often happens years around the Olympic year... for obvious reasons. Teams of that level are not going to make a statement at the Olympics (or even qualify) and if that was a goal for them, they would be in for another 5 years.

Baylen Taich and Nikolai Apter have been added in Pairs to the US ISP.
Very excited for Baylen to get back into the action!! (Though she was skating singles while looking for a partner.) I saw her at Novice Nationals a few years ago and she made an impression on me. Now we just need to manifest partners for Sonia Baram and Cayla Smith.

Tasha Shin Hui LAI / Gabriel LIU TPE , ice dance, juniors

We were wondering if they would represent Canada or not... Entries from JGP Bangkok confirms TPE. Not sure if that was already mentioned

just to make an Olympic team would’ve been a very special achievement and I am surprised that they have elected not to try to at least participate. I will miss this talented team.

Sometimes, it's just too much. You have to be 100% dedicated to want to train that much day in and day out. I understand that very well so maybe it is easier for me to get over retirements. Especially these kinds of retirements. The ones like Joseph Phan's related to major injury, these ones make me sad... but those about wanting to explore other things in life, I have no problem with. Being elite level athletes means that these people have drive, focus, discipline and ambition, which they can apply in many other fields.

Cayla is apparenly skating with someone (per Fort Wayne ISC Facebook page from this year's and last year's ice show). I'm hoping they'll pop up at a NQS event (maybe Skate Detroit?) this season.

Nica Digerness and Mark Sadusky (US Pairs skaters) have ended their partnership per a conversation I had over IG with Mark. He will be continuing on but not competing this year. May they both find new partners (if she is interested).
@momrk, there's a discussion about this in U.S. pairs thread. Nica is dealing with injuries and is in the process of raising money for expensive bone marrow transplant surgery (a recently developed biomedical procedure). Mark has indicated his desire to come back at some point, but he's taking this year off.
